Change the fuel filter; get the codes read and measure the vacuum available from the pump. Min 22in/Hg at idle.

"Part of the M6 motorway could be closed for up to 24 hours after a lorry with gas canisters on board crashed in Cheshire.

The lorry overturned on the motorway between junction 18 at Holmes Chapel and junction 19 at Knutsford.

Traffic is being directed along the A54 and the A556 before being allowed to rejoin the motorway.

The Highways Agency said traffic was queuing southbound to Lymm and northbound to Stoke-on-Trent.

A 200m exclusion zone has been put in place around the crash scene by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service."

Mention widening the M6 and the tree huggers appear in their droves to protest . Have you ever actually considered though just how little land an extra lane on each side of the M6 would take up ?
If you have flown over and around the UK in a small plane, you would get some idea of just how much unused land this country consists of. . A ten foot strip on either side of a motorway isn't going to make any recognisable difference.

I am sure like many others I have watched with concern at the seemingly endless increase in the cost of fuel at the pumps.

It is easy to point the finger at individuals profiteering or the Government choosing to bail out ailing banks rather than help out its hard pressed tax payers.

At the height of this fiasco prices rose to $100 a barrel and were blamed for the almost daily increase per litre. Since those heady days prices have dropped to $86 a barrel but I have yet to see any reduction per litre.

Predictions of when and if we can look forward to lower prices Read more

All I know about the cost of fuel production is that I regularly fill up in the Middle East in countries where of course 90% of the GNP is oil/ gas and the price per litre for petrol is equivalent to 11p.

If they can sell for that price and make a profit ( and its not self service) , then the cost of production has to be less. But the price is set by supply and demand and the weakness of the dollar does not help.

The cost of production in the Gulf is still high ( including my company helicopters at @ $6000 per hour -out of their loose change - : 0))

What we are paying for in addition is the cost of getting the fuel to the UK and tax, tax and more tax.

It is apparent to me that you cannot be selling just petrol on a forecourt and make a profit these days and as a result the supermarkets use their forecourts as loss leaders and four out of the six garages which were in my home town four years ago have become blocks of flats.

Who knows where it will end but its sure as hell the prices are not going to come down...

Hi all,
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to change the automatic tensioner with the engine in situ?
The Haynes manual does not cover the actual part.
The whole thing has come out of it's housing and has a very strong spring, I'm not sure if it can be done at all, as I have no idea how it is secured. At the moment it is jammed between the casing and the inner wing. If anyone can tell me what the job would entail it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you Biggrin Read more

It is possible to change. I think it is held on with a 14mm double hex bolt. The tensioner has broke into 2 pieces, common fault. You need to try to get it out from its jammed position (be careful there may still be tension in that spring) then unbolt the rest of the tensioner. If you get a new tensioner you'll see how it fits, it has a locating part that only fits one way.

Hi there

I suppose it eventually had to happen, there's a problem with our 1999 Accord 1.8 (120 K miles)

Basically it's cutting out i.e. engine is going dead, (speedo goes to zero and wipers also stop although apparently the lights stay on)

It only ever happens when SWMBO is driving and the bit in brackets is what she tells me!

The engine is definitely going dead though, both at speed and when idling, no warning, starts again right after and drives as sweetly as ever.

Had it in to our local garage and the diagnostic showed nothing. What they did say was that they'd had a similar Honda in recently and it turned out to need a new Coil/distributor pack (£350 from Honda plus VAT plus labour...ouch! although to their credit the did say that it would only be around one hours labour to actually fit it.)

They also said that they had no way to actually be sure that this was the problem i.e. we could shell out £500 on a car only worth a grand in effect for nothing!

I suppose my question is a) given the symptoms as described is this indeed likely to be the coil/distributor? and b) is it worth trying to get a second hand unit from a specialist breakers?

any suggestions gratefully received, (the garage gave a strong hint that we should just sell it on to some unsuspecting punter asap!)

Cheers

Steve

Now my ignition switch has failed totally and Honda still say that these series of cars were never part of the recall although it seems likely to me that the same parts are involved. My mechanic has confirmed that is defo the ignition switch. Honda did a recall this year that was outstanding for engine hesitation where they changed the oxygen sensor, however, on speaking with Honda customer service this week they now say that my car has never been subject to any recalls. what? seems the computer says no.....

I don't believe them and the honda dealer has now given me a list of 5 things that were done over the life of the car, but not willing to look at the ignition switch despite the mountain of evidence on internet of this problem - spoke to VOSA who also list the ignition recall and they say they cannot intervene on any cars more than 10 years old. Wow. Yet here is Honda issuing a recall on cars from 2000 re the faulty air bags - I dont get it? I will continue my argument with Honda anyway as I think that they have failed their customers in not including the full range of faulty ignitions, and am now chasing for the part number replaced on the recalls that did qualify, anyone have that info would be very helpful - thanks

I offer two, but I am sure that in the big wide world they are minor.

"Replaced" door sills on a Wolseley 6/80 with 2 x 2 timber.

My early Mini had a gearlever that dissapeared at about 45 degrees into the gearbox. Mini developed the knack of jumping out of third gear on the over-run. Solution - a plate with a hook attached to the heater housing that captured the gear lever when put into third. Pushbutton on the lever knob actuated a solenoid to release it. It worked very well. My engineer friends were impressed but the garage trade were appalled. Read more

1. Morris 1000 Traveller - repaired rotten woodwork with cement when parked next to a building site.

2 Austin 1100 - broken throttle cable. Fiddled around under bonnet to connect choke cable to throttle linkage - drove for some time with hand throttle! Also as the choke cable had a twist to lock feature I had a rudimentary cruise control.

3. Cortine Mk3 - seat back broke (dont ask!) - had it propped up with half a pool cue for about a year - came in handy when starter motor took to jamming regularly - could beat it with the pool cue to unjam it (shades of Basil Fawlty)

they're building a new supermarket along the road and have installed a pedestrian crossing and two new bus stops. The bus stops are not laybys just painted markings on, what is, quite a narrow road. The trouble (as I see it) is both stops are within the zigzag areas on each side of the crossing, the yellow bus stop 'box' begins about a foot or so from the actual crossing zone - this can't be right surely? I suspect it will take a fatal accident to get it changed. Will not reflect well on the muppet who was responsible for the road layout design either.

Can I run my 110bhp chipped to 143bhp, 1999 V reg passat tdi on vegetable oil?
Do I need to dilute it with with normal diesel? Will there be any longer term damage. Currently on 165K miles.
Or will it not work at all and screw up the engine?
Thanks in advance.

Anyone know of some of the best Personal Contract Plans for a car over either 1 or two years?

Also noticed that the business deals seem better, has anyone just set up a business to take advantage of them or as I suspect I am missing something here?

Best I found was £150 for a Nissan note over two years. Anyone know of any better deals? Read more

Bill Payer

APRs always look high on PCPs simply because of the fact that a big final payment is deferred.
What would the real final value of that Mini be? The issue with that deal is that if it'sonly worth about the same as the GFV then it's really cost about £300/mth to hire a the car for 2yrs.

Regarding "just setting up a company to take advantage of a business lease" - that wouldn't work as it would have to be VAT registered to recover any of the VAT, otherwise you might as well take a standard Personal Lease, which is normally the same rate as a business lease but includes VAT.
