What is the MG TF like for tallish drivers? I have read that it is cramped, but am not sure how bad it is.
I am 6 ft 1 tall and pretty skinny. Any advice very welcome. Read more

A Citroen C4 1.6 SX automatic!
I can't say I've ever been a Citroen fan in particular, but SWMBO commuted in it today and came back raving about it, so I went for a little blast myself.
The first thing that strikes you is the styling. It's gorgeous IMHO with some really neat details. The headlights that wrap around into the wings and come back almost to the wheelarches, the deep windscreen and the completely flush grille. It's as aesthetically pleasing as many contemporary hatchbacks are bland. What's more, in my opinion it has identity - this just couldn't have come out of Japan or Germany.
It gets better inside with what has to be the most wacky dash layout I've seen in years. The first thing that strikes is the steering wheel boss which is fixed in position, with the wheel rim rotating independently of it. The central boss contains thumb switches for radio controls and cruise control (!) , and also contains a neat row of warning lights. There are three backlit LCD panels - a big central one with speed, fuel and temperature gauges , one on the console showing computer and radio information, and a "strip" type digital LCD rev counter mounted on the steering boss. It's just different! I loved it.
This example has done 11,000 miles and like most hire cars, has probably had a fairly hard life, but the fit and finish is faultless. Everything works, nothing rattles, and the materials are as far removed from the brittle plastics of older Citroens as you can get. Golf standard it probably isn't, but it's more than decent.
On the road it's superb. The steering is a bit light, but has reasonable feel, the car turns in eagerly, and the ride, although on the firm side, is beautifully controlled. I took the car around some of my favourite lanes, and it flows beautifully. I can't comment on the outer limits of handling, but it felt secure and beautifully chuckable when "making progress". The engine is a little noisy, has the typical PSA petrol "tappety" idle, and not exactly face distorting, but its eager to rev, responsive, and very punchy for a 1.6. The auto box is a great match for it, kicking down eagerly, and allowing some degree of control via the Tiptronic mode. It seemed a little jerky when cold, but once warmed through it was smooth as you could wish.
It's just a taut, chuckable car which probably won't match a Focus in terms of outright ability, but is more than enough that most drivers in most situations wouldn't notice the difference.
Scrolling through the trip computer, the average showed 34.5 mpg which, although it might need to be taken with a pinch of salt, is a useful guideline. I thought it was impressive for a car that's probably been thrashed by almost everyone who's driven it, and certainly won't have been driven with the same consideration as one would reserve for their own car. Putting the computer into instant mode and driving it more gently, I would be very surprised if it couldn't average 40 mpg if driven with a little consideration.
Spec is superb - electric windows all round, ABS, a cracking sounding CD player, cruise control, tiptronic auto box, auto lights and wipers etc etc.
It's not a car I've ever looked at twice, but I found myself really warming to it in just a 20 minute drive which is not something a lot of cars, particularly "cooking" models tend to do for me these days. I like the way it's not just another bland box, and that the designers have clearly been given a bit of a free rein to make something a little different. It's probably one of the few small hatchbacks that you might actually buy with a little input from your heart as well as your head.
So that's about it really. If you're in the market for a small hatchback, by all means drive the superb Golf/Focus crowd, but try this as well. Put aside your prejudices about Citroen build quality too - this is still taut, tidy and rattle free after 10,000 hard driven miles.
I'd spend my own money on one.

Having just read your reviews im glad that some C4 owners are happy. I've just traded my 2005 C4 in for a new car (Not a citroen) Whilst the mechanicals of the car seemed pretty robust the electricals were an absolute nightmare, Despite repeated trips to the dealer (who was very good initially) it still played up. I loved the styling of the C4, but as all the reliability surveys seem to indicate if you want trouble free motoring its best to go elsewhere.
In the ongoing search for a suitable automatic for my dad, he is now seriously interested in a used Xsara PicassoExclusive 2.0 petrol automatic as it meets all his "criteria".
Motorpoint in Glasgow have an 07 with 13032 miles for £8699 (with electric sunroof which I believe was an option)
Citroen dealer has same car with 8877 miles for 9995.
Both cars carry the same area identifier on the plate and "Citroen UK" Slough number plates so assume that Citroen have had a job lot of these autos and sold them on (prob ex lease / rental)
My questions are basically
1. If that is screen price in Motorpoint, I believe they do "add-ons", how much realistically am I looking at as a final price?
2. What price differential would you expect for 4000 miles?
3. Have read the CBC breakdown and have a friend who has a Picasso Exclusive (but manual diesel), any feedback from auto owners?
Obviously a big factor, ultimately will be the trade in price offered and therefore, cost to change
Would also like to hear from Falkirk Bairn who I believe highly recommended Motorpoint in the past.

Believe it or not, at this stage it is nothing!
Similar to a separate thread on here recently, my dad has had some issues with his current car and being of the older genration, doesn't want to trade it in with a known fault so he is giving his mechanic one last chance of fixing it. Also the weather that day didn't help persuade a 76 year old man to go out car hunting for the day!
Car is going into garage beginning of next week and then depending on the outcome there will direct his next move!
Personally speaking, and taking your comments on board FB, I think he may be in a better bargaining position to go in the last few days of this month (if the cars are still available that is!).

As BG says, also the windows have an anti trap function if they percive that something is stuck in the window as it closes they will open aboit half way.
The review notes that the shuttle is classed as a Commercial Vehicle. I had a lot of trouble getting insurance on mine as a private punter since although the VIN classed it as a diesel car for tax the body type is minibus.
The descriptions for these vehicles as accessed by the insurance databases seem very confused and inconsistent. The underlying description of Transporter T30 130 TDI SWB (model type) as the main description not really helping much as it was then randomly associated with body type descriptions
The insurance companies offering commercial cover baulked mainly at the number of seats (8) classing it a minibus which SEVERELY restricted the opportunities for cover. In the end I was offered only one commercial policy which seemed to differ little from a personal policy except for not offering cover for use of other vehicles and being more expensive .
Also beware of putting the details into a comparison site (I won't say which), getting quotes but when phoning to confirm cover (as recommended) being turned down.
In the end the answer was very simple - using a large supermarket chain site brought up the right description for the car at a good price - I hope Read more

Can anybody help please.
When I try unlocking the driver or passenger doors, it sets off the alarm. Only way into the vehicle is through the hatch Ahhhhhh.
Dealer says its an intermittent fault (even I know that) and wants to charge £80 per hour plus VAT to investigate.

Mazda is a 323F on a 51 plate. It does not have remote central locking, just key operated + alarm.
Again any help would be appreciated.
I've been told that E-marking changes came in last year using a larger encircled E - the "informer" also stated that components with old E-marking can only be used on older cars that were similarly marked.
This sounds totally unworkable - has anyone else heard about this - am I just being wound up? Read more
Does sounds unworkable and a bit pointless. E and CE markings do not reflect the size of the component/system they are stamped to. For example trains have to be CE marked somewhere to confirm their EMC, safety, interoperability etc. Compare these proportions to that of a H4 lamp.
Hi,
I am gonna sell my Saxo in the next 2/3 months. My only problem is that I think the gearbox bearings have gone.
When I lift the clutch I get a rattling noise which goes when I depress the clutch. I have changed the gearbox oil which didn't help.
Basically what is my best option, if I sell it no one will really want it due to the gearbox being on the way out. Are my only other options to get a reconditioned box put in, or I can just change the bearings.

As far as I understand it:
Noise evident on depressing clutch pedal:
Reasons:-
Dry, worn or damaged release bearing.
Excessive play between drive plate hub splines and shaft splines.
Noise evident as clutch pedal released:
Reasons:-
Distorted driven plate.
Broken or weak driven plate cushion coil springs.
Release bearing loose on retainer hub.

Ventura park Sutton Coldfield have quoted me £160 all in for my golfs first varible service and £35 all in for brake fluid chnage. Can someone recommend them or avoid? Next cheapest was VW dealer in Stourbridge £190 for service and £55 for brake fluid change.

My wife and I are expecting our first child in April. We have about £3.5k to spend on a decent car that we will be happy to put the baby in, and that will potentially do us through to the next baby too (hopefully). We're aiming to get a dog soon too so an estate would be good.
A 4x4 would not go a miss as we will be living out in the Scottish countryside, but not that bothered. The in laws have retired to the south of France - we're in Aberdeen, so a car that could handle THAT journey would be great - but to be honest it might be just way too far to drive.
So far I have been looking at Volvo V40's (with high mileage), Citroen Picasso (seem pricey), Renault Scenic (not seen any in our price bracket), Skoda Fabia Estate (top end of budget).
I'm open to any and all ideas really ... what car, what age, what to look out for?
Your thoughts appreciated.

Definately a Mondeo, either 1.8 or 2.0. Very safe with loads of airbags, drive well and well specced if you get Zetec or above.
We had an MX5 for 18 months and adored it. Beautifully made, didn't skip a beat despite spending most of its time in the upper half of the rev range, draught and drip free with the roof up, and a laugh a minute to drive. Had we not decided to start a family (or been rich enough to buy another car without selling it), we'd still have it now. One pair of rear tyres and one service in 18,000 hard driven miles.
It might not corner as fast as an MGF, but the MGF would really have to go some to be as involving or as flattering to a driver of even moderate skill. My grandmother could catch and hold a slide in an MX-5! Empty roundabouts are a joy that plasters a six foot wide grin on the face.
