New Beetle R32 - Would you? - EoinM
Another topic just got me thinking. Suppose there was to be a new Beetle based say on Golf Mk V or VI underpinnings as opposed to the stodgy Mk IV. Apart from the obvious lack of practicality etc.......if there was to be a sporty model in the vain of the Golf GTi or R32 would it tempt anyone? Or has the (no offence to anyone!!!!) girly current model had an adverse effect on the models image? I thonk i would if it was an R32 with the DSG 'box...

There's no point in it. Seat or Skoda with the same works would surely be better.

Prefer the practicality of a Golf, a R32 estate would extend the appeal more than a Beetle.

How about an R32 Beetle cabrio with "YMCA" on the stereo for a full on style..... erm.....statement ? ;-)

There was an RSi version of the new Beetle launched in Germany a few years back. Based on the Golf IV R32 with 3.2litre V6 and 4 wheel drive and fitted with monster spoilers. Still looked girly. It was limited to a few hundred and I'm not sure it sold particularly well. Don't know whether it still had the glass vase on the dashboard.

I've always thought the reinvented Beetle an unnecessary twee thing; an R32 version would do nothing to tempt me. Buy a Golf instead.

If you want a quick VW, an R32 version of the new Scirocco would be a better proposition; depending on what that turns out like.

Its funny, in the US and Canada the base engine in the Golf, Jetta and Beetle is a 170bhp 2.5L straight five. If I could buy a Golf here that made the same noise as my old Audi I would be tempted... preferably turbocharged though, to improve economy and/or make it go much faster.. ;o)

My brother bought a Beetle when they first came out - long time ago now - in California. That was in the days when diesel car sales were legal in the state of California. One reason he still has it is he likes/wants a diesel and you cannot currently buy new diesels.... soon to change though.
