I like the quote from Tom Tom: It's the fault of the road classification. Er no, it's putting inappropriate roads onto your system and halfwits who switch off their brains when they switch on their sat nav.

But wouldnt it be nice. A moving bird view of a full digital OS map.

I think full UK coverage for sat navs is about £4,000.

Of course I would want 3d modelling too so I could see just how steep Porlock Hill is!

My B & SiL are visiting later this year from Australia, doing a round the world trip and spending some time in various locations, including 2 or 3 months in the UK. We have a "spare" car in the family, my mother's old L reg Peugeot 106 diesel - ancient but very sound - and thought it might be a nice idea to lend it to them. I am having great trouble in arranging short term insurance. The vehicle is not normally insured, it is just borrowed by family members whenever they need a car and swapped to their regular insurance, hence it is not possible to include BiL as a named driver. I have telephoned and searched the net and found various possibilities but hidden in the small print is usually "australian licence holders excluded" or some such thing. He is English and does have a very old UK licence, having been in Aus over 30 years, and as a late 50s aussie civil servant with no convictions it is hardly likely to be deathrace when he is over here. I did speak to one broker who would offer insurance if it was a campervan, but not a car! I have thought of taking out insurance in my name and including him as a named driver, still cheaper than car hire, but then he would be the primary driver and not me. Alternatively we could rely on his UK licence to arrange insurance in his name but I would not like to put that to the test in the unfortunate event of an accident. I would welcome any suggestions or tips as to what might be possible.

Thanks in advance, MGs Read more

Excellent suggestions AE, I'll check both points. I'm beginning to think that if you factor in my time it is almost cheaper to hire.

Thanks MGs

What do people think? Rational decision please...

Both would be roughly the same price so which do people think is the best buy? Read more

Hi guys 'n gals,

Has any one bought this product (Bosun Mr. Jeeves Miracle Polish) from pricecrash.tv & if so, does it live up to the claims made by the presenters?

I've tried most of the major brands and have a current favorite. I am after genuine user experiences of this product... Sucks or Shines!

Hi all,

I currently have a Renault Scenic (51 plate) that I'm looking to replace.

Due to a car accident a few years ago, I really appreciate the ease of getting into and out of something higher off the ground.

I'm looking to replace my car (most likely with something maybe one year old, at auction) and the following things are important to me:

-speedometer and gauges in front of the driver, as opposed to in the centre console (rules out the Picasso)

-good fuel economy, ideally a better economy than my 1.9 dTi scenic.... I expect this to be diesel... but would consider a good petrol

-i just need a 4 seater, but would consider a 7 seater if it meets the above two points.

Is there anything anyone can recommend to me?

Cheers in anticipation Read more

Have a look at the Mazda 5

Turtle1966

Having read through many threads here over the years, I understand that Zetecs like to run cool rather than hot, but mine has just started to run cold!

The temp gauge barely gets to the top of the cold marker, even when in traffic. I can hear the fans cutting in, even though the gauge is still not up to "normal".

I have two questions, if anyone can help with some advice!

1) Is it going to be a problem to continue driving it?
2) Is there anything obvious that would cause this?

I'm thinking maybe the thermostat is stuck open? Coolant isn't getting a chance to warm to full temperature as it is going through the rad constantly? Would the system really be able to supercool in this way, even on a motorway run or in traffic?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

probably the sender. Best to get new part from Ford dealer, as used may be on the way to failing. Not expensive either - £15 odd inc VAT

Just reflecting on last weekend's carnage here in Spain. 24 killed on the roads, and TV reports as usual referring to "accidents" "caused by fog".
Judging by the cars that overtook me in one 45 minute drive through some horrendous patches of fog, mostly going at twice my speed and with no lights on, the proliferation of automatic transmission, cruise control and automatic headlights leaves drivers of *certain large cars* comatose if not actually brain dead in fog.

I am definitely a 'press on' driver and always have been...but....fog truly worries me. If thick enough you'll find me matching the lorries, with an enormous gap.

If only these people thought about it, they're piling into the unknown aren't they and hoping for the best. Same thing applies to monsoon type heavy rain, with the added aquaplaning concern.

For a variety of reasons, we are somewhat limited as to the choice of vehicle with which we intend repacing our current car. The vehicle that we will be purchasing is a 2007/8 model Kia Sedona.

According to the associated company blurb (official government fuel figures), this 7-seat behemoth returns a tad over 44 miles to the gallon on the extra-urban run.

According to entries made by owners on other forums, on a 'run' they seem to average between 22 - 28 mpg?

The same appears to be true of the Kia Picanto. Official figures show one particular model, the 1.1 manual, as attaining 64 mpg, but a happy owner who is also a member of the IAM records that he gets around 310 miles on mostly motorways from 27-28 litres. This is about 50mpg?

I'm sure that these vehicles cannot be unique in their massive 'true mileage' difference between quoted figures and attainable figures? What is the point of displaying a set of data that bears no relevance to the vehicle?

Although the literature states that each vehicle differs etc etc but come on! Surely any drop of more than 15% compared against official figures has to be looked at as misleading? Read more

Original dynamometers were water brakes and used flywheels on their own for the inertia;the load being adjusted by the setting of the water brake.Modern dynos use a combination of flywheels and electric simulation. There have been other types using no flywheels and doing it all by electric simulation but these were not common and have dropped out of use.

I'm in the middle of changing the gearbox on my fiesta as the old one had alot of miles up on it and was graunching and popping out of gear. I bought a low milage gearbox , but now I have my own gearbox out next to it I notice that looking at the front of the gearbox from my car, there is a large 4 pin plug there that the replacement box hasn't, it just has a blanking plate.
Does any one know what this plug is for, and is in possible to swap in on to the other box and how?

Please help, Rob.

Does it need the neutral switch to run? or can I just use a gearbox without that set up?

My fiancee passed her test recently with flying colours but she drove my old Rover the other day and didnt cope at all well, finding it very difficult to handle compared to the 207 and Corsa that she learnt in - anyone here had a new driver who suddenly got very scared of driving once they didnt have the safety net?

Just looking for ideas on how to help her both adjust to being on the road herself and also to the Rover - maybe just needs to do some miles. Just worried me because she was making a lot of silly mistakes - the power characteristics of the L-Series are quite different from a modern diesel and she doesnt understand the workings and theory behind it so its hard to explain to her!

I did thinka bout gettin some of those 'new driver' plates for the car so drivers knew she wasnt gonna be racing around. Read more

she doesn't exceed speed limits as

In the interests of strict accuracy, my wife did once drive the rough old Skoda 130 I had at the time back from a funeral in Cheshire at which I had spoken and also imbibed too freely to drive back. On the busy M6 some time after dark, my eye fell on the speedometer which to my fuddled surprise was nudging 90. I was unable to prevent myself from saying something slightly nervous and reproving.

In the back of the car were two old friends, one a Trinidadian and the other a Jamaican retired boxer. They both told me to shut up, so I did.

That was the only time. But I still hope she never reads this.
