Morning
Been offered a deal on a pcp where there is no deposit. The monthly figures and the mileage all adds up to where I want to be. I’ve used pcp before and bought Audi and BMW’s so always done ok even putting a deposit in. Any advice on this offer of no deposit? Read more

Well done! - rather you than me crawling about under cars on your drive this weather!
Great that you video-ed it....
Anyone here tackled this job? Ive removed the hoses, detached the cooler from its top mount and its free but theres no space to wriggle it upwards and out, A/C pipes and dipstick tube are in the way for starters. Seems to me It has to come out this way theres even less room to drop it through the bottom.Reason for removal - oil contamination in the cooler! Read more
Hello LJW61
...
Utter nightmare since returning from holiday I've noticed that the windscreen de mister fails to direct warm air on to the windscreen.
Took the glove box out and lo and behold the lever mechanism looked as it it was working.
So prematurely I refitted the glove box only to find the de mister not working.
I have tried contact cleaner on the connection and WD on the joints of the operating arms which are now locked solid.
I've ordered a new motor and my plan is to plug it in to see if it works as the linkage looks complex or is it ?
Please can you hel p ? Read more

“The 244/240 GLT is another car I'd really like!.
I remember reading an article in a classic car magazine not too long ago about the 400 series Volvo's, particularly the turbo's. Volvo was concerned about the long term reliability of turbocharging the 1.7, so massively over-engineered the installation. It didn't produce a huge amount of power, even for the time, but it was apparently extremely reliable, extremely driveable, and was able to use its power very effectively.”
Funny enough I hated the 240 at the time, I was a teenager and thought it was uncool but I loved the ultra modern looking 440 with its trip computer dash and big TURBO badge. As a salesman years later i got the chance to drive them and the appeal of both grew.
The 240 was a tank with surprisingly little interior space and loads of wind roar as you went much beyond 60mph with its barn door aerodynamics but it felt like it would run forever. The 440 Turbo really was barely any quicker than a normal GLT on the road with just 13bhp extra but it was a bit more flexible. The pick of the range was the nearly identical GLT which was much cheaper and gutsy enough. I used to pick one as my company car whenever one got traded in mostly on for the heated seats and the decent ride which was better than most rivals.
Whilst reading another well known monitoring forum which I shall call histin peads for legal reasons there seem to be a large sum of members on there who get verry uppity at other members because the way they have chosen to pay for their vehical.
You don't seem to get that on this forum you mostly get a good advice only the odd poster with tendency to be rude to other member's. But I digress.... Read more
Marketing is, at the end of day, the satisfying of needs and any half decent salesperson will tell you that they are selling the perceived emotional "need" primarily and the product itself in second place. Once someone has their heart set on a particular car, or any other product, the route to buying it (ie finance option) is the very last consideration.
Quick straw poll - what would other backroomers in urgent need of a car do if they had an unexpected windfall of, say, 10 Grand and no other pressing needs? New or s/h? Cash, finance or a bit of both? Bank loan, PCP, Dealer finance?
I’ve been in that situation, except the windfall was personal savings. I needed a car as the old one failed it’s MOT and was to be scrapped. All this talk about a car depreciating 40% or whatever in three years is in my experience nonsense. Whenever I look around for a new car, buying new always seems the best option. If I buy used, dealers charge a fortune for a 1-3 year old used car. I’m talking about a VW Polo or similar car. I’ve always found it better to buy new using a broker, or a good deal, as you get the three year warranty, new tyres, brakes etc, more time before a new cam belt etc, and I know that the car has not been driven badly. In short you get a longer life for not so much more money. Thus far, touch wood, my car engines have lasted well, with never a worn clutch despite exceeding 100k miles in several cars, as I have the car maintained and I drive it in a sympathetic manner. Obviously I could buy a used car privately, but that comes with risk unless you know how to assess a car, and I don’t. Oh, and to answer the question I always pay cash or equivalent. For my last car the dealer told me to take out PCP and pay it off ASAP in order to get a £500 discount on the car. So that is what I did. Some consider that immoral, but VW Finance is a big organisation, they know what they are doing, and they charge a lot of people 6% interest, which is much higher than a bank loan. So I don’t loose any sleep.
So I currently own a mk7 vw golf but due to a new addition to the family I am looking to change this for a bigger saloon petrol model and after much research with my requirements and budget I have narrowed down my choice to the following:
Bmw f30 316i
Mk3 Skoda Octavia Elegance 1.4 TSI
So I’d love to hear some thoughts on here from any owners of either of just opinions on the best choice. My difficulty is neither of these specs are currently available anywhere near where I live so test driving isn’t easy but I still somehow hope to drive both before I buy.
My thoughts are as follows:
Bmw - the car my heart wants more with better quality interior and driving experience but my concerns are the possibly underpowered engine, boot space and possible running costs as I’ve never owned a bmw before and this does worry me. The ones I’m looking at are around 60k on the clock.
Skoda - the sensible option as it ticks nearly all the boxes but interior will be a downgrade on my current car let alone a bmw...and should I buy one when I could get the entry level 3 series for the same money?
Thoughts welcome!! Read more
Have to say the search for a 2nd hand car of the kind I am looking for is incredibly frustrating, have identified models and some welcome suggestions on here too but just by how much the market is still completely flooded with diesels.
The cars I am looking at, I would say only 5-10% of them nationwide are petrol and they are all hundreds of miles away!...
We have a 2009 Focus, the battery went flat in one of the remotes, we replaced it now the car won't recognise the fob.
Checked the ops manual it describes in great detail how to do it by putting the key in the ignition and turning it on 6 or 8 times.... Read more
Ohh, my apologies, I didn't realise there was a difference even after reading the OPs manual.
However I will double check the battery, surprisingly the 2nd battery I bought I am using in a Disco key fob without probs....but anyway i get your point totally....
I believe the newest range of Honda HRVs are made in Japan, as are the new CRVs.
On the subject of corroded rear disks on a Qashqai my neighbour thought he would change the disks & pads for his daughter. Dealer wanted £300.
He bought the Pagid disks & pads for £100 (Pagid are the OEM) - jacked the car up & was snookered by the electronic brake system - you need a electronic diag tool to retract the old pads. He put the wheel on & left the car as was - he is still looking for help on this as far as I know. Read more
Trolling? 5,000K odd miles per year or a total mileage of 75,000K are not high in either case. I ran original MK1 golfs to double that mileage with few problems other than the usual bulkhead rust.
Thanks. Loss of interest confirmed.
