Hi there

My vectra was off the road nearly 8 months. My battery was dead so got the new one but still could not start the car. I can hear the solenoid click. Pulled the starter motor out cleaned the brushes worked fine on the bench. Put it back in a car same thing, motor turns 10mm, battery ok, tryed jump starting but no luck. Keys opens and closes the car.... Read more

Check connections to starter motor and earth lead to battery and engine/chassis. Remove the poly-vee drive belt ,you may find one of the rotating parts has seized.

My car's EML is stuck on, and I'm reluctant to use the car until it's been checked. The local Ford dealer says he has had several Fiestas with this, and a software update was needed to correct it. A couple of weeks ago, the screen was telling me that the average mpg was dropping fast, while doing a steady 60 on dual carriageway. Maybe that's part of it.

Will see what happens when it's connected up on Thursday. I wondered if anyone else has had this happen. Read more

After a sensor was replaced, and the problem seemed solved, a week or two later, it all happened again. Another fault was that the radio/sound system refused to switch off, and these were corrected by replacing the PCM, the car's computer.

No further troubles so hope it's behaving properly now. Glad it was all done under warranty.

I see that the reviewer of this car refers to the "HOOD". Have they brought out a convertible? In the Uk it is called the bonnet. Please stop using Americanisms. We are thank goodness not Yanks Read more

As a lifelong petrolhead, mangled car names are just the lowest of the low. Keys should be confiscated from those who know not the name of that which they drive! Who can blame Peugeot for not selling cars to a country which refers to them as POO-zhoh? Columbo must be turning in his grave!
Hyundai is pronounced differently in the UK and USA, and each version is half correct (like the Club 18-30ers going to eye-BEETH-er.)
Volkswagen should IMHO either be given full-on German pronunciation (which always sounds pretentious!) or just the simpler V-W. Jeremy Clarkson's "VOAKS-var-gun", aping the 1980s "if only everything in life.." TV ad is excruciatingly bad.
Yes, I agree, it's a pedant's paradise. But why mash things up to death? RENN-orlt? OR-dee? LANCE-ear? It's actually quite a relief that the DAY-woo /DIE-woo ("DAY-ooh" in your actual Korean!) marque is no more, as few car brands sounded quite so whimsical.

From what I have been reading the situation is totally out of control with police incapable of making an impact. The DVLA also seems to take no action when registered number plate providers dont follow procedures. Read more

Putting aside my suspicion as to why such a question would be asked in the first place, I'd be inclined to agree with Gibbo that declaring SORN would put you on a DVLA watch list.

I currently drive a 2017 Kia Sportage 1.6GDi ‘2’, which is on a PCP agreement, ending at the start of August 2019. When I took out the agreement, I put down a fairly hefty deposit which kept the monthly payments low – around the £60 mark – which suited me at the time. I’m conscious that whilst at the moment I have some equity in the car – probably around £3.5k – I’m aware the equity will reduce down to somewhere near zero the closer I get to next August. I could do with fixing my costs more long term for one reason or another, so I’m starting to think of changing sooner rather than later to take advantage of the current level of equity. I could use the equity as deposit for a 36 or 48 month PCP on something – not sure what yet.

Renting a car is obviously going to be more expensive than buying because of the middle man. But cars and houses are not comparable. No-one (in their right mind) collects ordinary cars as a source of investment income. One of the main reasons houses are so expensive is that a significant number of people, especially of immigrant stock, collect and hoard houses as a safe refuge for their investments - a sort of unproductive business. They can even state mortgage interest payments as a business expense and put it against tax!!! This was long ago denied to the ordinary house buyer.

Hello all,

I have a Volkswagen tiguan 2.0tdi 4motion on a 2010 plate that has recently been causing me some concern. There is a rattling from the engine bay area that is there on occasions but not others. So if the vehicle hasn't been driven for several days on start up it makes a horrendous noise as if the engine is struggling to run, or atleast thst is how it sounds to me. I have taken it to my local mechanic who has suggested it is the flywheel starting to go. Now I get where he is coming from but I am not totally convinced this is the soul route of the problem. I previously had a zafira diesel where I ended up replacing the clutch and flywheel and it still persisted and ended up being to do with the egr/ dpf side of things, the rattling flywheel was as a result of a poorly running engine.... If you press the clutch and the noise goes away, then this is usually an indication of clutch dmf problems. Terraclean,re-map and egr blank off ? what for?

It will not happen as to build even a new platform at a railway station costs million's of pounds in the UK. The M25 will continue to get worse with three lanes for HGV vehicles side by side leaving a single line for the private motorist, we have never had it so good.
