A friend is having problems with his Mazda 6, starting, misfiring and just general poor running.
He booked it into a dealer who said he had badly contaminated petrol,
They said they had not seen anything like it before, apparently the fuel in the tank was black.
It is used often, done around 45k and topped up regularly with petrol.
They have changed the pump, cleaned the tank and it’s still not right.
Any thoughts on what could have caused the petrol contamination?
I guess if it is really that bad then the injections could be clogged too.
Thanks
Dave

I've seen diesel fuel contaminated with the diesel bug which causes a black sludge - but never petrol.

Hi all, I recently took the C Max 1.6 Petrol 57 plate for it's MOT and it passed but had an advisory for a minor leak on the exhaust flexi pipe. I understand that the Manifold, Cat and Flexi are one unit and are expensive to replace. I have found a repair pipe on ebay that looks like a good alternative to replacing the whole lot as it is only around £50 compared to the £500 plus to replace the lot. ebay item number: 172838029760. I can also get this from my local CES motor factors. I was wondering if any of you have any experience fitting one of these and if its as simple as it appears. To replace the Manifold, Cat and Flexi the Subframe has to be dropped from what I can gather. Any thoughts most welcome and thanks in advance. Dave Read more

It shouldn't make a difference even if you're changing makes of car. The dealer is buying your trade-in from you, and will settle the o/s finance on your behalf so that they can either sell the car on their forecourt or 'trade it out' free of finance.

We have had SP95 E10 - new name E10, for a long while here in France, I avoid it as it is known to give problems in vehicles that don't have a lot of use and in mowers, garden machinery etc. I have diesel road vehcles apart from the 'bikes. Instead I use SP 95 new name E5 because it's only got maximum 5% ethanol as does yours in UK. Most brands are about 3-4% ethanol.

We can also get E85 = 85% ethanol, Really cheap over here €0.69 per litre but very few cars can use it.

Search on line for one of the vehicles that are parked up- especially if iit is interesting. I did that on behalf of a concerned relative. Adverts on Autotrader popped up, with several cars and motorhomes photographed on the street. The council said they were aware when I contacted them and the situation resolved, with the numbers reduced to on driveway parking only and a house move later on.

I agree that coporate customer service is now terrible, aside from a few firms, but the 'entitlement culture' that pervades society makes things far worse.

...and yet all most of us do is moan about it and do very little, mainly because it means we'll be having to do quite a bit of work lobbying MPs/ministers/getting the media involved and for long periods, because the vast majority of the rest of us can't be bothered unless that issue affects us.

“They said the fault not covered under warranty as it is "wear and tear." They’re trying to fob you off. Timing chain failure at this mileage is certainly not wear and tear, it is a warranty issue and should be covered. Press the dealer and warranty firm and make clear that you will persue them through legal channels if they don’t act. It’s normal for warranty firms to try wriggling out of claims but they usually will back down if you stand your ground. I am assuming from your post that it is a low mileage car with full dealer history? As for the warranty being up as another poster mentions well as long as the issue was reported before the policy was up then they are obligated to fix it. I know it’s too late to say but this engine is not a good design, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

The OP has only done about 700 miles in 8 months - the engine may never have fully warmed up, which is hardly ideal usage.

I think the design of the humps is often the problem. I don’t like the cushions, as drivers are tempted to straddle them potentially causing wear on the inner edges of the tyres as he has described in the past. Humps that rise fairly gently to a flat central area are OK in my experience, they don’t cause the suspension/tyres much of a problem and I think they still encourage people to slow down.
He is right though about some of the “sharp” humps that could damage the tyres. Another problem arises when they are poorly marked and difficult to see.
