Daedalus

Its ages since I last posted here, so hopefully someone can help.

I am considering either an A3 Sportback 2.0 TFSI Quattro or an S3 Sportback no more than 2 years old. I want the auto S-Tronic gearbox but have no idea how good they are or how reliable (my old S8 went through 3 gearboxes in 120000 miles (220,000 miles when I scrapped it) and I will be keeping this car for 10 years or so, so don’t want the same issues.... VAG have never been good at making robust automatic gearboxes for some reason. In the 80’s and 90’s it was the biggest worry when buying one and today the automated manuals they use on most 4cyl cars are pretty notorious for problems. If buying new or nearly new and offloading before the manufacturer backed warranty is up then go ahead but buying used I would stick with the manual. If it’s a sporty drive you’re looking for then a manual is always more involving anyway.

My brother is in need of a new car. He currently drives an ancient Fabia which has needed various bits replacing of late after it failed its MOT and broke down over the summer. My Mum is very kindly going to offer to buy him a new one, but doesn’t want to spend more than £6k plus the Fabia as p/x.

He only needs a small petrol hatchback. He doesn’t use a car during the week for work, only at weekends, and doesn’t carry passengers or huge loads. I’ve suggested a new Sandero (I’m biased with my Logan!), but other, more knowledgeable folk than me might have better ideas, or might recommend something a couple of years old instead?

Any thoughts? Read more

“So the rule is simple. If you want to buy a 3 year olf Kia with 4 years warranty only buy form an official Kia dealer and insist on seeing the paperwork. No paperwork walk away.”

Absolutely agree. Approved used stock is the best way to buy used cars but you still need to verify the service record. If the car is at a non-franchise dealer but has a full Kia history then make sure they don’t service it and that it’s cheap enough to factor in a dealer service if it’s shortly required. Ignore any attempts to tell you the warranty is still valid, I’ve had this from almost every salesman when viewing cars both for myself and on behalf of customers. They will tell you anything to get a deal on paper.

It is certainly a predicament.
I shortly intend to sell my Alfa GTV 3.0.
I’m not sure I will allow anyone to drive it insured or not.
220 bhp is not so much these days but I don’t intend getting wrapped around a tree by someone else’s doing.
I guess I may lose potential buyers but not worth the risk to me.
Though we I bought it (private sale) I showed the chap my insurance certificate that allowed me 3rd party only cover he just gave me the keys and said take it as far as you want!

Is there any way of switching off the 'self-levelling' ads on either side of the page? Horrible to experience and I use the site less now purely becasue of them. Couldn't even tell you who advertises this way, I just leave the site.

Self-levelling on a motoring website should be for suspension references only ;-) Read more

Hi

Following on from the discussion re the DV6 engine, I think I've settled on the Peugeot 3008, from a quick look on Autotrader, the 2011 - 14 models will be within my budget, possilby an auto with the 16 unit, ideally the 2.0hdi.... Read more

my budget would be a max of £4,000, I tend do ignore the manufactures service schedules and follow my own of an oil change every 5k and full filter includng the engine flush at 10k, with the transmision every 3 years using good quality oil and molyslip. I recall buying a mk3 Astra from a local dealer in Northumberland with a full MOT and cambelt change without any other servicing as I would be doing it myself.

I still carry out a weekly service check, force of habit from my PSV and HGV days....

Hi all,

Ok so driving down the motorway to legoland last tuesday i pulled into the services , did my buisiness and went to leave . Just as i got near the slip road i felt a kind of judder (only a slight one) and the engine malfunction light came on , and my turbo had stopped working , i had power but going above 40 was a struggle. I plugged my cheapo obd2 gizmo in and it told me of a fault code U0073 Control module communication bus A off , i erased the code and restarted the car a few times and nothing changed. I only had like 10 ish miles left to get to legoland so i kept going , parked up and when i got back to the car , it drove fine all the way home.... Read more

The fuel filter hasnt been changed since ive had it , and this issue has only happened i think 5 times max since ive had it and all of those times within the last year . Im planning on doing the fuel filter this weekend with any luck.

And im not sure if it is going into limp mode , as i said previously the car can still get up to at least 60 just without the turbo and takes a long ass time to get there , i thought tlimp mode was alot slower ...?
