I'm in need of some advice...

I'm in the market to replace my (old) diesel, which is sadly reaching the end of it's life. Unfortunately, considering the uncertainty around diesel, especially around London I'll be looking for a petrol engine capable of a high mpg, most likely a turbo petrol. ... Read more

Luckily we don't have to buy what any particular maker wants us to, there is always an alternative, nor does a vehicle have to be bought new, when they don't make what you want the answer is simple, don't buy.

I`ve just called at the local CAB to see if they`d countersign a passport photo/application for me.I was told that they couldn`t because it has to be somebody known to them....and they don`t have their passport with them to quote the number.

I mentioned that I don`t know any professional people.Don`t visit the quacks,don`t have a solicitor,etc.... Read more

Fair point,I suppose we pretty much live in a fobbed-off world. At least that`s unlikely on this forum.Engineers and good mechanics are problem solvers and generally brighter than the hoi polloi....

Take it to a specialist LPG garage - don't waste your time guessing.

While coolant radiators and a/c condensers seem to do a similar job, they are working at completely different pressures. Coolant systems are working at around 10-20 psi. The high pressure side on an a/c system can run to 300psi ++ .Condensers are really not a repairable item ,as the aluminium becomes porous and leak like a sieve. There are companies that can custom fabricate a new unit for your classic car,but unlikely to be cheap.Perhaps find a good indy a/c specialist that can adapt a condenser off another car.

I'm going to buy a used car for approx £16k, probably from Motorpoint, and I'd prefer to pay by credit card(s). Unfortunately I'll need to spread the total cost over 2 credit cards if possible.

Just been accepted for a Santander card for £6k (0.5% cashback with 28 months intetest free) and Halifax £13k (no cashback but 0% for 30 months).

It just occurred to me, in terms of the extra protection you receive when buying a car with credit card. Which of the 2 banks would be your first port of call if there were any problems requiring their help?

Are they both equally liable or the bank (Halifax) with the largest payment takes on more/full liability.

I wonder how common it is for buyers to actually use thos kind of protection anyway? Read more

But...the system is dependent on the driver knowing when is best to deploy it. The driver has to sit there, hands on wheel, whilst it 'drives' within it's limitations.

I don't full understand the description of the automonous overtaking sequence either. Why is the car accelerating hard?

Traffic Jam assist is certainly something I'd appreciate a time, but that is simply low speed adaptive cruise control.

As the article points out, Honda's ADAS system and other's have been around since 2006, and are hardly considered essential, unlike A/C or Bluetooth handsfree. Not expecting Qashqai sales to rocket any higher due to this

I doubt if these systems can deal with the need to avoid the large pot holes and road debris that we have on our roads.

I have a spreadsheet which shows over 40 years of motoring. During the first 30 years I ran bangers. The total depreciation of those 11 cars came to about 3K.

Forty years ago inflation was a lot worse. I never ran (or at least depended upon) bangers, but in the 70s it was certainly possible to make a paper profit on a car. IIRC I bought my first Maxi at 2-3 years old for £725 and sold it a couple of years later for £795. The real depreciation happened underneath, usually in the box sections.

Looks like people on flea-bay can do volvo radio codes, but some models need to be sent away to be de-coded. May be cheaper to buy another unit.

Settle an argument please.

Mate drove past a speed camera van, legal speed, but noticed that the man in blue was sitting in the drivers seat. Subsequent argument was whether there would have been anyone on the camera because they don't go round in pairs?

Anyone know for sure? Read more

None!

There's a video on YouTube where someone walks up to a "Police" speed camera van and challenges the occupants by asking them whether they are police officers because, on the outside of their van, it says "Cheshire Police" or whatever the county happens to be:...

I placed an order for a new Volvo XC60 with UK car discounts on the 6th March 2018, paying a £1000.00 deposit. I was informed that it was just like placing an order with my local dealer with no risk. I received confirmation that my order had been placed with Volvo and I should expect delivery some 12-13 weeks later. On the 14th May some 10 weeks later I was told that due to circumstances beyond their control Volvo had cancelled their discount terms and they could no longer supply the vehicle. UK Car discounts immediately refunded my deposit. The team at Uk Car Discounts has always been friendly and helpful. However everyone should be aware there are risks when placing an order through UK Car Discounts. This resulted in me taking out a 26k car loan with an independent loan company; I have 4 years of debt and no car to show for it. Disappointed and let down does not even come close. I believe Uk Car Discounts could have tried harder to offer me an alternative solution, but sadly no communication received other than the cancellation. Read more

Given that Volvo were supplying the vehicle and offering the discount, I wonder how the circumstances were beyond their control? Surely they created the circumstances?!

I think OP means it was beyond control of his supplier. IIRC there's a bit of a running skirmish with discounters and manufacturers over things like bulk discounts.
