I’ve always had a manual van but an automatic car. Recently swapped car and ended up with a manual as it was a good deal and I still really like the car but it is irritating me that I didn’t find another automatic. Hoping I forget about the pleasure of driving an auto or I can’t see me buying a manual car again. Read more

Tempting fate but never had a problem with any of my autos, couldn't be easier, R pedal go, L pedal stop and no clutch to go wrong.

I've had the ABS warning light come on a couple of days ago. It has happened once before about a year ago, but after a day or so, it went away again so I put it down to something getting unseated by a bump in the road or something and didn't worry about it.

This time around, the warning light has stayed on for a few days now so I'm starting to take it more seriously. It also coincided with the start of the hotter weather this week so I figured it may be heat-related and was hoping it might go away again once the weather cooled down - it hasn't.... Read more

Thanks for the advice, all - very helpful.

I did manage to borrow a friend's Autel AL619 that said it was compatible. It was able to read the code - showed C1350 Recirculation Pump. Not something I think I can deal with so I'll take it to someone more capable shortly (who has the proper diagnostics too)....

Hi All,

I was just after a bit of advice. I've taken a campervan hire company to small claims over a damage dispute. Long and short of it is that the company are claming there is damage to the roof and withheld my deposit. The roof was not included in either pre or post inspection, due to the height of the van a standard visual inspection was impossible, I was not offered any ladders and the check out document was signed off as 'all good' with no damage recorded other than a window chip. The business then carried out an inspection, using a ladder, 24 hours post my returning the van and notified me they were witholding my money. When I asked for all the documentation the inspection document had been adapted with simply 'Lines???' as a drawing.... Read more

Back in the 1990's I was scammed by a trailer hire company in much the same way.

I hired a four-wheel box trailer which had one of those very thin, flimsy ,translucent fibre-glass roofs....

I have read several posters on here who have negotiated a good discount on a new car by agreeing to a PCP deal then cancelling it, but still getting the original price with cash.

Can someone "in the know" elaborate on how this is best achieved please? I have always paid cash for cars up to now, but in the crazy world we live in this is obviously not the way to go.... Read more

Thanks SLO, just the type of information I was after. I also note your advice re. goodwill if the salesman has been "done-over" for his/her PCP commission.

It strikes me that one solution to all of this would be the invention of a fuel gauge that actually showed the amount of fuel left and therefore the maximum amount required to fill up. I realise that there is always a breather tube, there is evaporation, expansion, contraction, whatever and the shape of a fuel tank is always irregular, but is it really beyond the realm of 21st century science to devise a fuel gauge for a car accurate to within 5% or so?

I had a near miss similar to the quoted story. A Primus sat at the kerbside for a while moved odd after I started to cross. No sound and no indicators used. I managed to step back in time. Read more

I enquired about an add-on when I bought a hybrid in 2014, but there was nothing then known to Toyota or my dealer. I asked HJ after buying another three years later, and was informed that the industry could not agree on a solution!

Wow just been looking at the price of new cars, and comparing with what I know the family was paying 12 months ago, seems to have gone up remarkably for 12 months
