Hi all,

I need some advice if possible. 3 1/2 months ago i purchased a 2010 Peugeot 3008 from a used car dealership. It came with a 3 month warranty.

On Tuesday night it broke down and the display was showing "Gearbox error". I had it towed to the garage i purchased it from and although they haven't given me an estimate on the repair cost, it's obvious from emails and phone calls that they intend to charge me normal parts / labour costs. I've done a bit of research and discovered that the Consumer Rights Act of 2015 states that if the purchase of a car is over 30 days but less than 6 months ago then you have the right to demand the car be fixed at no cost because the law implies that the fault was probably there when you purchased it unless the garage can prove otherwise.

However, the garage have gone from being lovely and approachable when i purchased the car to very stroppy and kinda rude. I'm certain that if i say to them "The car is less then 6 months old so i want you to fix it for free" then they'll probably tell me to **** off and have it towed back to my house.

So what can i / should i do ?

I agree with Barney. Get a second opinion. Look online at Peugeotforums to see if this is a common problem

(IIRC it is - I typed "3008 ge" into Google on chrome and the autosearch immediately filled in with "3008 gearbox problems")

and take it from there once you know what's wrong, what it will cost to fix, and the consumer rights you have.

Why do people think that a hire car is there right after an accident and are quite happy to run up a £2920 bill and expect someone else to to pay it. BP.
Our car was written off last year when another driver went through a junction and despite the Police saying he was 100% at fault we decide that it wasn't a good idea to have a hire car as we could end up paying for it. It took over 7 months for the other insurance company to decide that they were to blame for the accident and of course we would have had to pay the car hire up to that point.
People need to think before jumping in and hiring cars even if they think the other driver is at fault.

If it's a cut and dried case where the other driver is at fault, then contacting the other driver's insurance company directly will often prove fruitful, as they will bend over backwards to get you a (admittedly fairly basic) courtesy car and your car repaired and returned to you asap.

Unfortunately so many people cannot see the bigger picture, and if involved in an accident not their fault milk it for all its worth, ie brand new equivalent credit hire vehicle to pose in for a month or more and then some juicy undeserved compo down the line, easily putting another zero on the total claim cost, then they wonder why their insurance renewal is knocking on the door of 4 figures....

Never knew that was purpose of MOT. My mum's old Fiesta may have to be replaced. She only goes to Sainsbury's and the library but replacing it with a more environmentally sound car would be good: if you ignore environmental cost of building the new car. Read more

Agree with your recommendation of Winter tyres. I have had them in the past and they have been excellent. My current CRV runs on all seasons and they have also been great, especially in the recent snow. I live and commute to work on ungritted country lanes.

Noticed website has had an update/refresh while the forum is still from the dark ages. How long will this continue? Perhaps I'm alone in thinking this way?

Just my own opinion, but the forum format is fine, works for me and doesn't need tinkering with. Read more

Regarding the forum being a bit dinosaurian - I'm a bit of a dinosaur myself. It suits me fine - don't mess with it.

I like the new look. Its also good that you can call up articles with one click and scroll down easily without loading up each page. I used to give up in frustration on the old click bait lists.

Hi I took a car warranty out in February this year on my car unfortunately my car broke down on the 23 rd of March so I call the warranty company up to tell them what had happened ( MotorEasy) anyway time passed telephone calls after telephone call finally they send a engineer Out to the car to look at it the garage where the is had explained what the issue was ( Timing chain had snapped) told Motor easy the cost £2200 due to the work taking the engine out but they would not accept this any got told yesterday that the warranty does not cover this as it was a ongoing issue with the car .so any faults that come up with the warranty could not be covered as any car has potentially has ongoing issues so is is not worth the paper it is wrote on .i have learnt a very expensive lesson hear BE WARNED DO NOT take a warranty out with MOTOR EASY Read more

These are notorious for timing chain failure among many other woes. You should never have bought an old BM diesel on such a limited budget and no warranty will ever be worth the cost of the paper it’s printed on, on a vehicle like this. You couldn’t offer cover as it’s almost guaranteed to fail spectacularly. Sorry to pour petrol on the flames but you’d be best getting shot of this as soon as you can and buy something more mundane and reliable that fits your budget. I hope you get some luck here but I highly doubt you will.

Moving a washing machine to GF parents place. Fill up just before destination. GF tells them to put 92 in it. 95 is on the filler flap but that dropped off and is under the seat. I've put 92 in it without trouble in the past but I suspect it might now be a bit coked (runs on after switchoff) so I've been sticking to 95.

Trouble restarting and keeping it going for the return journey after only about half an hour stop. Improves after about a klick but still hesitates a couple of times during the 20k or so trip and is definately running rough and down on power (which it didn't have a lot of before) going over hump-backed bridges.... Neither the new points set nor the new condensor (apparently checked by the seller on the computer, but in Chinese, the smoke-and-mirrors lingo) fit, so changing them as a precaution doesn't seem to be an option right now.

The condensor could probably be made to fit, (one connector would need drilled out, plus theres an extra one) but the points are apparently a mirror image (?!), which seems a bit weird, and makes me think I was doing something stupid,...

I was listening to a talk radio station.

An interesting caller phoned in for legal advice. He was caught speeding, going 9mph over the speed limit.

He ticked the box and pleaded guilty, and paid his £100 fine.

However, he received a form from the Courts asking for details of his income and it seems he would be fined according to his income. The £100 which he had paid was refunded to his bank account.

It seems since 24 April 2018, a new form of fines for speeding has kicked in and is linked to people's income. ... Read more

"I'm only guessing but I don't think that's what the OP is suggesting at all. From what I gather the driver in question must have received a FP offer, paid his £100 and then had the offer withdrawn and his £100 returned."

Yes, that is correct, this is what the caller said on the radio. ...

I love my i10 - all the benefits of a small car yet practical enough to use as an occasional family car. Good to drive and reliable too.

Just wish they'd drop the 1.0 turbo engine from the i20 in it to make a sporty version - like Kia are going to do with the Picanto GT-Line (eventually).
