Last week I used a local road for the first time this year. Most of it is narrow, between walls or other boundaries, and without sidewalks. To limit speeding, cushions were laid several years ago, which could be negotiated without much hassle. Now, however, many of them have developed - caused - adjacent potholes, while the cushions themselves are undamaged. The result is an unavoidable obstacle course. The problem is that this lane is the only alternative route through Fr0dsham avoiding the main A56, and its width will make any serious repair work a real problem.

Luckily I rarely need to go that way. Read more

Walking in Reading yesterday, I noticed a road-sweeper truck going over some potholes - the brushes were actually ripping up the edges of the holes, throwing out bits of tarmac and making the holes worse.

Re practising in a car park, as an alternative if you can't find a fairly empty car park, driving about on a ride on lawnmower can provide steering/manoevering experience if one has a reasonable area of lawn or drive or knows someone who does. With the advantage that the position of the wheels can be seen

SWMBO wants an 18 month old Mini Clubman. Fine by me and the two major sources are Mini dealers or Motorpoint. For what are effectively identical cars of age, mileage and specification, the Motorpoint cars are about 2-3% cheaper. The cars are about £14,750 +/- £1,000.

I reckon for cars of that age we are best to buy from the dealer not Motorpoint but happy to listen to arguments either way...... Read more

Regardless of other people's experience of MP - I have none - I can relate to having bought an R56 Cooper S from Benham's Wolverhampton (now Rybrook) and an R57 from Rybrook Stratford upon Avon.

My R56 (with pan roof) was used hard by me, and was subject to 3 claims under warranty, inc a new short engine. Still miss it and see it locally. Had first class treatment from Sytner Leicester, during repairs, courtesy car delivered to home, and regular updates on repairs. The R57 had one small repair under warranty, again, courteous and fuss free. ...

sleep apnea is a possible here, might be worth going to your doctor to get checked for this, its surprisingly common, can be treated successfully i know several people who have suffered including temporary loss of HGV licence until cured, now doing fine.

I have recently driven the exact same model of car on two different tyres, Goodyear Efficient Grip and Continental Eco Contact 5. I am pretty sure the latter have a softer ride which I prefer. Now the handling might be different, but I’m a sedate driver so they seem on a par.

I’ve noticed that ‘HJ’ often recommends in his column Michelin Crossclimates for a quieter softer ride.

Anyone got any views based on experience? I won’t be changing tyres for a year, but I will go for those that provide the smoothest ride. In the past I’ve used Michelin Energy Savers, and Kumho kh27 (which were dangerous), and some Hankook eco thingies. Can’t say I noticed obvious differences, apart from the Kumho which were dangerous in the wet. From what I’ve read energy saving tyres are made from a harder compound, so they tend to grip a bit less, and give a bit harder ride. Read more

I have just this morning ordered four Michelin Cross Climate+ tyres to replace the OE Kumho Solus KL21's on my Ssangyong Korando (fitting next Wednesday, so results remain to be seen).

Kumho's did well overall, lasted well over 30k on the fronts and decent grip, but I have decided rather than keep them on the back and just replace the fronts to upgrade the lot to a better quality option. It was down to these or Nokian Weatherproofs which have been recommended to me by a few people and might be worth you taking a look at....

Some car co's state in service schedule periodic cleaning of air flow sensor eg Toyota. VW does not. From a preventative maintenance perspective, is it worth getting some electrical contact cleaning spray and cleaning air flow sensor?

Thank you for any replies... Read more

I'd say yes. Decent quality electrical contact cleaner in a spray can should remove any deposits and dry. The heating & cleaning process of the wires in the MAF should do the rest.

I can point you to plenty of Pug owners who do this on their MAFs with no issues.

I was stopped at the side of a house today due to roadworks in the village i was working in and noticed the driveway was full of Renaults. There was an Alpine GTA, an Avantine, a Vel Satis, a Megane (S1) convertible, a 25, a Safrane and a late model Laguna parked on the road (daily driver?). Quite a collection, though unfortunately (imo) there wasn't a 16, hey ho!. Read more

I've known a few MK1 and MK2 Clio owners who have rarely had any issues other than the usual wear and tear.

Had a call from a friend this morning his (new to him) Astra had gone in to limp mode 24mph max, after receiving a tyre pressure warning.
After re-inflating the offending tyre both the warning lights went out and the cars performance was back to normal.
For peace of mind I did a scan and didn’t find any fault codes.
Does anyone know if the TPMS can trigger limp home mode?

Cheers, Mark Read more

I've only been driving for a little over a year, and she has been driving for about a week, so sorry if we're missing something blindingly obvious.

My wife drove to the local leasure centre this morning, and as she was trying to park, she misjudged it and scraped against another vehicle, she said she scraped the wheel arch. She promtly went into another space, ran to the customer services desk to grab a pen and paper but when she returned the car had gone, probably in the space of 5/10 minutes. She has since left her details with the leisure centre for them to pass on should anyone come forward with a report of damage.... Read more
