I've noticed recently several queries over non function of start stop. The answer given is usually low battery charge. However, I 'believe it is not as simple as that. As the owner of a Mercedes C class I have experienced this problem over the winter period and carried out a little research. On Mercedes in particular there are several things can cause this including coolant temperature too high or too low, outside temp, high current drain, low vacuum, seatbelt not fastened, and strangely, cabin temp not reaching the set temp, and probably the ngine management just having a "moment". Normally the system works (annoyingly) well in summer after a few minutes driving. All through winter it has been either non functional or intermittent. Sometimes when it is working it suddenly decides to start the engine while standing still which can be a little disconcerting. Read more

I think anyone with stop/start already knows this. Had it on cars for 10 years now, brilliant, saved us a fortune in VED. A bit irrelevent now in that respect due to the VED changes (mainly to private motorists) but any polution avoided is a positive.

Hello Everyone,

I'm thinking of buying a used Toyota Prius from a Toyota dealer, the car I have been shown however is missing a chunk out of the tyre wall on the drivers side front. The tyre is also quite worn on the outside edges. I've been told by the Toyota dealer that it's nothing to worry about, however I'd like to get HJ's honest opinion about this.... Read more

To me the damage on the alloy wheel looks minor - doesn't look as thought it's a major speed kerb incident. I've seen much worse damage with an annoying high kerb parkng scrape, ...

"Just not many un-modded ones left now...not sure about the 2007-11 model (not so well thought of if I recall)."

Yes Andy, the later car was heavier, had less sophisticated rear suspension, and barely any more power (1bhp!). As a track day weapon the earlier car would surely be better....

I have just purchased a Corsa c 02, 975cc.

I took off the timing cover because it had a horrid oil leak.I changed the crankshaft seal, cleaned all mating surfaces, fitted new cover seal ,applied cyclicone where instructed too.reassembled the timing chain etc, I noticed a groove in the crankshaft pully hub,it didnt feel to deep.I still have a slight leak not as bad as before ,would the groove cause the leak because I cant see where else the leak would be..The engine has done 100,57 miles.PS really getting into the nitty gritty now and learning so much from this site ty all xxxx...

The "cheapest" Jag I-Pace in the UK is listed as £63,495 OTR. Take away the dreaded VAT and the base price is approx. £52,900.

A quick visit to the US Jaguar website lists the same car at $69,500, or £49,700 at current exchange rates. The sales tax in the US varies from zero to 8%, so they get a MUCH cheaper car "on the road", (upto £10,000 cheaper almost)... Read more

Exchange rates change every day. Unless they change the price daily they will never get it spot on and there may well be differences in spec as well.

Those prices a few months ago would have made it much cheaper in the UK!...

We recently bought a 64-plate Fiesta EcoBoost 1.0 which has a recurring but intermittent fault. During acceleration (from about 2500 rpm upwards) there is sometimes hesitancy in its power delivery that feels like misfiring. This sometimes, but not always, leads to the engine putting itself into some kind of safe mode where it limits the rev range strictly to 2000rpm. The problem usually happens when it is fully warm, often about 15 minutes into a journey. It has done this roughly eight times within the last two months – but, of course, never when it’s at the dealership. I think that they think we’re making it up.

The thing is, no engine problem/management lights or messages are displayed on the dash and no entries are ever made into the engine management unit’s log. We and our main Ford dealer are having real trouble tracking down the cause, so I would be interested to hear from anyone who has experienced similar issues. ... Read more
