Toyota Prius - Buying a Used Car with chunk of tyre wall missing - Ryan Stawisyznski

Hello Everyone,

I'm thinking of buying a used Toyota Prius from a Toyota dealer, the car I have been shown however is missing a chunk out of the tyre wall on the drivers side front. The tyre is also quite worn on the outside edges. I've been told by the Toyota dealer that it's nothing to worry about, however I'd like to get HJ's honest opinion about this.

If that is really being retailed by a Toyota dealer, then unless its in the trade corner as a cheapy at cost price, all is lost.

The wheel's had a good clout, the tyre needs to be removed to check for inner carcass damage, but its perished to hell on the shoulder and needs to be scrapped anway.

If thats acceptable as a visible fault, Lord above knows what horrors lurk unseen, walk away and don't look back.

If its an approved used car, i'd be inclined to send that pic to Toyota UK with the name and address of the dealer attached and the reg of the car.

Thank you for the quick response Gordon it is an official Toyota dealer

I'll stick it to them the information about the tyre wall you've mentioned, they have agreed to refurbish all of the alloy wheels to remove the curb rash.

It is indeed an approved used car and I'll send the picture off to Toyota UK

Thank you very much!

I would have been tempted to remind them that it is against the law to sell an unroadworthy vehicle.

Not much of a garage if they do not already know that, I could understand low tread, but not perished, that would make me walk away

As GB, report the garage as they're clearly not meeting main dealer standards. Would not buy a vehicle off them.

We once looked at an Aygo from a main dealer.

It was high mileage, 23,000 and just over a year old, but wasn't much cheaper than low mileage examples.

I looked round. Both front tyres were at just above legal, the rear tyres were at about 3mm. Front pads were almost shot.

They offered to change 1 front tyre!

We walked.

I would have them check the suspension geometry as well.

People and businesses who don't care about what you CAN see, will care even less about what you CANNOT see.

I would run a mile..

(This is the expurgated version..I would be banned for writing the unexpurgated one:-)

That's not a used car. It's an abused car.

To me the damage on the alloy wheel looks minor - doesn't look as thought it's a major speed kerb incident. I've seen much worse damage with an annoying high kerb parkng scrape,

What I would be concerned about is the condition of the tyres - Ignoring the damage - if you zoom in on the photo that tyre has loads of micro cracks, it looks rotten. Zoom in over the tread - awful - or is it me?

Bet the other tyres are as bad - dangerous.

It's not been looked after so conclusion is the same - run away and find another!
