Is it really necessary to "try your brakes" after driving through a few inches of water? Surely this dates back to the days of water pooling in drum brakes and isn't necessary with modern disc brakes otherwise you'd have to "try your brakes" after every rain shower? Is it just a case of "that's what we've always done" by the council?

Hi
I have an Audi A3, bought as an ex-demo from the dealer, currently 2.5 years old. To the rear bumper, the paint is starting to peel, and there is faint evidence of a previous repair.... Read more
You bought a car with a three year warranty from the date of registration I assume, so unless you were made aware of the paint repair and the associated two year warranty, I don’t see how they can wiggle out of their obligation to repair it. Assuming you can prove it is a defect rather than damage caused during your ownership. Does the contract you signed, or the invoice, say anything sbout a repair or damage?
Why don't manufacturers use the engine management system of diesel cars to alert the driver when DPF regeneration is in progress, with a message advising that the engine should be kept running until it is completed? Similarly, when a turbo has been running under heavy load, the EMS could intervene to prevent the driver switching the engine off until it's had a chance to cool off. With all the advanced technology in modern cars, why can't they act to protect the engine from driver misuse? Read more
.... my husband phoned his Skoda dealer in the UK to ask how to do it but was told 'It is not possible to do it due to Health & Safety'. What planet are these dealers on. Fake Health & Safety excuses get me so mad...
Its called wiper service mode on some cars released in the last few years, i know the MK3 Focus has similar function, for use with partial or hidden wiper blade areas -- the manual usually tells you this and how to activate it for replacing wiper blades and for winter.
Sorry really boils down to RTFM, but the dealer needs poked with a sharp stick, and i'd be changing dealer also.
Usual bunch of suspects, although Mercs and Vauxhalls are missing. Don't their development people do their jobs properly? Hyundai not on the list as usual. SRS system may not operate correctly? That is just unforgivable. Why do people buy this stuff. Ignorance and lack of product research I would guess. Read more
I would venture that few, if any, of these faults are present during development. In most cases they are problems with components which are bought in from outside contractors. These are initially produced to the correct specification, but after a while corners are cut (to save cash) and the manufacturer supplies the car maker with substandard parts.
Not every single part is tested, that is usually done on a sample from a batch, so if the samples 'pass' the batch gets passed and fitted to vehicles....
"Car written off 1 month before new car due"
To buy a cheap car prior to you getting the new, will involve a new Ins Policy, as your current Policy will be cancelled on write off, which will then have to be modified, at a cost when the new car arrives.
When similar happened to me I hired from a local car hire firm, you will find that option cheaper and less hassle, - no point in using the branded car hire firms Read more
stay away from admiral until they change those horrible, intelligence-insulting adverts.....
Also this "Auto-Renewal" is a scam! Santander (this was on house insurance but same on cars) Was telephoned and I cancelled they then renewed! So more calls and hassle to get it sorted.I always compare every year and rarely stay with same firm. Read more

VAG turbos use vanes that rotate a few degrees, they sometimes stick due to carbon build up which affects performance.
A member asked about lifting the rear base of the Coupe seat because a child had been sick on it, I had asked the same Question yesterday, this mornin g I had done the job within 5 mins, front OFF/S Sear fully forward to give you room, Put your hand under the Corner of the base & lift, Job Done, I needed to do this to clear the underside of the newly purchased car.

Time to change the freelander, so off out to the dealers today, short list, Hyundai Santa Fe, skoda kodiaq, Volvo XC60. Volvo dealer opened the car through the window from inside, it was raining, left us to look at it, went inside all too busy, receptionist not interested, walked out.
Hyundai eventually got someone to open up a car, again from inside, it was raining, then left us, waited, ignored, receptionist busy chatting, gave up.
Skoda, wanted a manual, only had automatic, aggressively asked why I didn't want an automatic, everyone has an automatic. Will you be getting a manual? don't know... Can you access central stock? I will have to log on to a computer... Could you then? .... Sulkily went through the list... said we would try with a dealer who really wanted to sell a car.... But do they exist!. Any other models I should consider? £24000 up to one year old, diesel, manual, 2,tonne towing approx,... Read more
Thanks for the constructive alternative suggestions, appreciated.
Have now managed to book 2 test drives, Volvo, but they only have auto, rarely have a manual, any thoughts on the auto box? Wife hasn't really driven an auto before, so jury is out on that one.
Dealer said bring your license and you can go off on your own for half an hour, fair enough!
Managed to book a manual Skoda, both are on Saturday. Have driven the Hyundai before and was quite happy with that.

You think tha's bad? My local restaurant was shut down by health and safety because the chef hadn't conducted a full and proper whisk assessment.
