In January, I bought a Skoda Octavia 1.8 diesel. It had done 91,000 miles but looked appeared to be in pretty good condition and drove well when I test drove it.

It broke down only 1.8 miles from the dealership. They repaired it within a couple of days but it's been nothing but trouble since. The engine cuts out randomly, usually when stopping or pulling away but this is an intermittent problem. ... Read more

Have they sorted out the shortage of 1.4 TSI DSG across the Seat / Skoda variants yet?, the last time I looked at the Seat Ateca range it was pushing 20 weeks for delivery of a 1.4 DSG, at a time when we are all being encouraged to buy Petrols over Diesels, yet the increase in manufacturing capacity of this popular Petrol version, doesn't seem to be keeping pace. Perhaps they need to open a few more factories, I suggest they consider one of the many Diesel plants in the UK, such as Fords' plant in Dagenham, which currently makes around 800k diesel engines a year, exactly what is going to happen to this plant and the jobs there when people stop buying diesel engine cars?. The press are being very quiet one that score.

A new diesel option?. I thought diesel was supposed to be dead and out of vogue with the car buying public?. So why are manufacturers still spending on R&D costs, and releasing more engine options for a fuel which is constantly being made anti social by both the mainstream and motoring press?. Read more

Hi all. After having very bad luck with 2 hyundai i40s as a private hire taxi, I went for what I thought was the reliable vw cc. But have been horrified at sone of the stories I've been reading about the vw group. I thought VW TDIs were bullet proof? I've seen many private hire taxi skodas hit the half a million mile mark with no major problems. Is this vw group of the past? Read more

Does anyone have some tips for buyers, other than service history, on what signs there can be of care or neglect? I can think of:...

How can we improve the standards of service given by car dealerships? I have experienced what I consider to be gross negligence from my car dealership when submitting my 5 year old i20 for its regularly observed annual service and MOT. The dealership moved to new premises in 2014 which included their own MOT test station. As usual, I booked the car in for the day whilst my wife and I went shopping in town and left the car for its annual service and MOT in late September 2016 at around 9am. They called my mobile at around 4 pm to say the car was all done and ready for collection. On arrival the servicing documentation seemed rather lacking - with 43,000 miles on the clock, I was expecting a detailed report on the state of wear on my brake pads and discs all round - all unchanged from new, but apparently the technician had made no report on these important items. I was told not to worry as the car had passed its MOT and received the pass certificate plus the exhaust emissions and brake test readouts. With this being a full annual service just before the 5 year warranty expired, I would have expected a detailed report on the whole braking system as I can only inspect the brake pad wear on the outer pads by viewing through the alloy wheel spokes whereas, surely the annual service would include removal of all the road wheels to enable a proper inspection and report to be made? As it turned out it was little more than an oil and filter change plus a wash and valet plus an on site MOT - even the engine oil was half way down the dipstick between Full and Min when engine was cool and levels settled on the driveway at home. The car has been utterly reliable since new and has exceeded my expectations in every way but the dealership experience really lets it down.

I wouldn't use any of the fast fit places for servicing - many but not all are well known for advising the replacement of items which are not necessary. Blame branch targets and individual bonuses.

Better to find either an specialist independent (usually on more premium brands) or a trusted local garage which comes recommended.

Good that the 1.4 turbo is back as the car needs this unit. Has been absent from the configuratorn for a while. Leaving only derv and the underpowered 95hp petrol.
Perfectly useful vehicle with the 120hp petrol turbo. Cost effective. About as cool as log fire. Good. I'd have one.
