Why are the general masses endeared by diesel cars? I do about 5-6000 miles a year and irregular journeys of about 15 miles there and back to work place three days a week. A diesel will just not cut it.

I would like a petrol engined car, an automatic, with a bit of pizzazz. There is just nothing out there on the forecourts. I am willing to spend £10kish and no-one is running up to me to take my cash. Been at 5/6 nationwide dealers - Skoda, VW, Ford, Peugeot, Mazda - they all searched their databases and came up with over 700 diesels that fitted the bill and about 10 petrols....a Skoda, a BMW 3 series estate, and I forget the other ones.... Mitsubishi used to be a really interesting, popular brand. Shoguns with electronically adjustable shocks, hydraulic suspension (on very high spec ones at least), automatic gearbox tech that even Porsche made use of... rear wheel steering on saloons, smooth v6 engines.. the Sigma was a brilliant car as well, check out this 1990 top gear review-

What on earth happened? I'm not looking to bash Mitsubishi as i do like the brands older models, but it seems like the new cars were designed by the same people making mitsubishi refrigerator systems for the asian market, white goods cars!!

What's the point in them these days or are they just marching to a slow death. They don't even have reliability on their side to make up for the blandness..? Read more

The Mirage is a considerably worse car than the Colt it replaced.

Hello, can you tell me if a blown exhaust manifold gasket )between turbo and exhaust manifold) is an automatic MOT failure, if so any recommendations for a product that can be applied on the day of the test to bung the leak? thanks, Mike. Read more

A major exhaust gas leak is a failure. A minor one would be a pass and advise. Really depends on the severity of the leak.

Hello. I would really appreciate your advice and thoughts on this.

I want to buy a 1600tdci cmax, 2015 with about 40k on it. Ithe will be used as a taxi. I love the cmax for its comfort but I have read that the 1600 pug engine has injector issues which lead to blowing the turbo.... Read more

Unlucky on the Octavia though problems on the DSG box are very common the engines are usually pretty robust but there are unlucky examples like this.

The 2.0 in the C-max is a much better engine and know to cover heavy mileages in the Euro 7 cabs it's also fitted to. Garages used by hackney drivers should know it inside out. They're not totally vice free though, DPF issues are common as is DMF failure. Drivers with a heavy right boot who've a habit of sharp acceleration tend to find they can breakup by 70k, while others with a more gentle style combined with good luck can see 200k before they go.

Don't touch the auto! It's a complex automated manual similar to VW's DSG box and prone to plenty of problems at high mileage.

Not pet related but at the end of April I taxed the Caterham ready for the summer. First trip ou the engine started to missfire on the A46 just as I was passing a pull off, it ground to a halt shortly after. Quick check showed no priming noise from the low pressure fuel pump but the fuse was OK so looked like a dead fuel pump. Rang Aviva Rescue whose number puts you direct to the RAC. Told them the problem, they said I was a priority due to my location on a major trunk road and I would be attended to withing 45 minutes, this was at 12.45 pm on a slow Sunday.

Patrol rang me 15 minutes later, he was about 6 miles away changing a wheel on another car. Discussed problem and he agreed awith my diagnosis and said there was no point in him attending since he did not have the parts, he would phone it strait through for recovery. 15 mintes later RAC rang to say recovery on its way, expect 90 minutes but that was from my initial call so expect them within the hour (about 2.15). 2.45 no recovery so rang them back and they promised to investigate and update me. Rang me back to say truck on the way....

I have a 12 year old Golf. It's a clean car but the headlamp outer lenses have what I would describe as a 'frosting' effect which was mentioned on the last MOT. It's not yellowing or clouding. I was thinking of trying out the 3M kit with a UV/water resist treatment as I can't afford new headlamps. Not sure if this will work with the kind of problem I have on these. Has anyone tried this product with the issues that I have? The 3M product has very good reviews. Here are what my headlamps look like

Many abrasive products recommended here

Toothpaste is the least abrasive and if headlight not too bad MAY do the trick...

Hi,

I have an old 2001 Daewoo Matiz that I bought for my wife as her first practice car. It has only 34,000 on the clock. After about a few weeks of buying, while driving, the car stalled. When started again, I could hear some sound coming from exhaust as if there is some issues, I kept revving for a while and then all of a sudden car got normal and then it didn't stall for the rest of the trip. Next day the same thing happened! ... Read more

Possibly collapsed silencer/muffler or blocked catalytic converter?

I read with interest letters from JA concerning her MINI and JH concerning his Mercedes C class Elegance. Both were looking to sell and I would be keen to talk to them about buying these vehicles if they are still available. I am looking to buy a good quality older car for limited use.

I wonder if you are able to put me in touch or enable me to do so.

Best regards

Is there legislation or EEC directive re. the minimum mileage expected on a car gearbox?

I work in a service dept of a large dealer as the workshop controller and I see more and more cases of people buying cars from garages all over the country then bringing them into us with lots of faults, because they saw it on "the internet" it seems that a lot of people have lost their common sense. You should only buy a car from a garage that you know and is nearby so you take it back if there is a problem.
We had someone this week with a vehicle that they had brought from a garage in London over 100 miles away and the car should have been scrapped. We did a report for the owner (FOC) to help her get her money back and I got a call from the trader making threats so you know what he is like.
So only buy from a good local garage. Be warned.
