I have this sound which has been getting worse for a couple of months, most noticable on idle. It seemed to go once up to speed, but I have heard it more intermittently. Just pulling up tonight it was worse and I could smell burning. I also noticed engine idle revs went up 200rpm which has never happened before. I turned the engine off and restarted and the idle revs were back to normal. I am going to park it up and use my daughters car. It sounds like it's coming from the alternator area. Car starts ok and holds a charge. Any ideas appreciated. It's an old MK5 2.0 GT TDI. Below is a vid of the noise, but it has sounded worse!

Well done again Elecie doc. My indie was able to replace the clutch mechanism rather than the whole alternator saving me over 100 pounds.

I have a 2006 Renault Modus and I am having problems with both the lights and wiper stalks. Everything is dead and non-responsive on both stalks apart from the left and right indicators on the left stalk and the water squirter on the wiper stalk.

When you use the water the wipers work fine, but when you turn it down to use the wipers normally it is totally dead. Same on the left one, the indicators are working normally, but neither the full beam or normal lights are coming on.... Read more

I have a Saab 9-3 1.9 TiD 2005. Recently, it has been going into limp mode intermittently but now it's always on limp mode. It had P0400, P1109, P1110 and P1125. I have changed the throttlebody and throttle accelerator, swirl flap actuator and services the EGR. The vehicle starts okay but won't go beyond 2000rpm. It's MPG has noe risen to 53.9 which is strange.
The AC works intermittently too.
This vehicle has become very hard to drive and I have tried to think what might be wrong but not succeeding. Want to try and take out the ECU and have it checked.
Would appreciate suggestions and cures for my predicament

Thanks. Read more

Left bulb went so bough 2 Bosch 477 h7 and replaced both at the same time but the lights are very poor, they are giving minimal coverage and weird bright scattered criss crosses on the road.
I removed 1 and put the 1 working bulb I had taken out back in and that one is fine.

Any ideas what I've done wrong? Read more

My daughter took her 2014 astra for the annual service at the Vauxhall main dealers, she pays for the servicing under an additional vauxhall servicing warranty.

They carried out a full service today at no charge because of this extra warranty. When the service was completed they recommeded an air condtion service for a charge of £65. My question is why isnt the air conditioning system a part of the general service? Is this normal practice for all car manufacturers? Read more

My car's aircon has not been 'serviced' or re-gassed in the 15 years I've been running it and still produces cold air when required. It might help that it is part of a 'climate control' system that I leave on its auto setting, so the compressor will be run regularly without my having to think about it -- as others have said, that has presumably kept the seals in good condition.

HJ has raised the point about the latest refrigerant (R1234? Sorry, can't remember the details off the top of my head!) leaking much more readily and maybe that will change the picture. All I can say that my wife's 3-year-old car has the new chemical and is still annoyingly capable of freezing my hands and feet, but it's early days yet!

Power sterring fluid keeps leeking, at first the car made a high pithed noise I then checked and the fluid was out, added more and it leaked again. Initially it was more stiff turning right then left. Im now at the stage where theres no noise anymore I am using the car but obviously steering is stiff. There doesent seem to be a hole in the container but I wouldnt know where to look, does anyone know what the next step is and what has caused this?

Couple of days ago I was a passenger in a car where the driver was using hands free kit. One of his clients had computer problems so he was giving detailed advice and quite clearly was not focussed on driving. He drove up the backside of a a coach all the time. Once the call was over he overtook the coach and was a ble to concentrate on driving. Using the knob to control the infotainment system and intially make the call distracted him and slowed progress.

Perhaps some can drive, talk and use a b****y infotainment system, some can't. Both IS and use of mobile phone must be questionable while driving. Maybe all drivers have to retake their driving test to be allowed to use such devices. Both will increase accidents temporarily, until every techno loaded car has collision avoidance systems.... This very morning had an incident of this nature. A young woman in front driving an Astra on a quiet rural road doing 40mph in a 50 limit. On a couple of occasions she let her car drift well over the centre line then yanked the car back as she realised. I was wanting past but was worried so sounded my horn as her car started to drift again, her head was down near the center display, She yanked the car back so violently she only just managed to keep her wheels out of the ditch. She visibly jumped at the sound of my horn.

In my opinion her actions were criminal, dangerous and stupid.

Hello,

I have recently had nearly a thousand pounds of work done on my old renault megane. Seems crazy on such an old car, but i tested many new cars and could not get to grips with them. Apparently people hate driving the older meganes due to heavy clutches etc, but i guess i must have got to used to driving it, anyway. ... Read more
