So we've had years of promoting diesel as a fuel, to the point where some car ranges are only available as diesels, and now that there's a nice broad tax base the Government can happily milk diesel owners and blame it all on the health lobby. Most of the health issues are around inner city areas that already, or could, have other methods of collecting additional taxes to try and reduce diesel use. Why not increase those rather than hitting everyone who's been persuaded to buy diesels by government policy? Read more

what the hell are we doing, the MPs see a problem and hit it with a tax it dosnt matter what the problem is just make it cost more. money making ideas every time. where is all this tax going, its certainly not on roads otherwise we would have the finest roads in the world, its not on some super technology which removes all the pollutants from the air(which i would support no problem} where the hell is it going.it would be great if everyone had an electric car but what is producing all the electricity for charging and what incentive is there in buying a battery car when in the real world you have to pay just short of £90000 for a car that will do more than 50 miles on a charge, and the infrastructure is just not around to justify battery cars we would have to have more electric points than fuel nozzels and even then you would have to have a queueing system as it only takes 5 minutes or so to fill up with fuel not so with electric cars.i do understand the need for some radical action , it beats me why in glasgow they did away with trams and trolly buses which were all electic. maybe we should do what they do in japan and wear masks i would if i lived in a polluted city.just throwing extra tax burdens at people just will not work, somthing else will suffer in some familes so people can carry on the way we are

Two things I suggest as good practice very early in the process ;

Ensure scene is safe and reduce likelihood of further crash/injuries.

Obtain witness details quickly, they tend to disappear fairly quickly. Read more

You are only required to exchange insurance details in an injury crash, and then it can be produced to anyone with reasonable grounds to require a look at those details to comply with the law.

In damage only crashes, producing your insurance to the other driver is not a legal requirement....

Vauxhall have just paid and replaced my steering column but it has not cured the problem and they now advise a new central control, unit is required at a cost of £900 which is not covered under the lifetime warranty. Has anyone else had the same problem, I don't want to pay out £900 if it won't fix the EPS fault. Read more

Hi there,

Looking for some help / advice regarding BMW dealership diagnostics. To cut a long story short my car went into a dealership for investigation concerning a rattle on startup, this investigation came back with a £7k bill for correcting it.... Read more

Not all warranty companies do this at all. Any dealer warranty should cover from day one as it should and any warranty we put on used cars was always active from day one though they did frown on shelling out for claims shortly after activation. We parted company with RAC warranties over this, we made too many claims. A pity because their cover was excellent with an unlimited claims limit.

If you bought the warranty yourself then yes these sort of privately bought warranties often do have some sort of terms to stop you buying one for a car that had an existing fault which is fair enough. Check the terms on your warranty documents and look at what claims limit is on it too.

The history log in your BMW should show the dates and times if you have the right equipment to read them.

There are 2 logs in the ECU for fault codes. One is always active, one is a pure history dead log.

The active one is always searching and changing, thats why if you repair the car sometimes the fault code will clear itself and be made redundant and placed into the history log.

Sometimes the fault code doesn't clear itself and needs to be cleared manually, people with the diagnostic kit will clear the fault code thats in the active.

No one ever has a reason to go into the history log and clear anything. It won't remove any lights, it won't do anything but I believe it can be cleared with the right know how.

You need to pay a main dealer to print off the history log for you before you act further, you'll need proof.

I very much like Chickenwire's suggestion. It would be helpful to know if someone, for example, has experience in the motor trade (relies on truth but bluffers are invariably exposed) or like me, interested but neglible practical experience and obsessed with safety.

Obviously this can usually be gleaned by reading posts but helpful to have something set out....

Hi, I'm looking at a Honda Accord 2.0 i VTEC Executive 4dr. It's a 2005 plate, petrol engine, but has 206k miles on the clock. 2 owners, the first was a major football club and from the miles between MOTs on the DVLA history it appears to be mostly motorway miles. It appears to be in great condition inside and out and was top of the range in specs when bought so has all the toys. From what I can see Honda Accords seem to be very reliable and it has 8 service stamps (I'm assuming these are yearly services). Seller wants £795 and it seems a good deal to me, but the mileage worries me.

Am I nuts for considering this? What should I be looking for / asking the seller? Are there any known pitfalls with the Accord? It's a private seller and I will have pretty much no comeback if I take it and it turns out to be a lemon. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks Read more

Our 1994 2.0GL Passat was 242,000m when sold; I see no reason why a much younger Honda 2litre shouldn't have similar longevity. If it looks and sounds OK it seems well worth a £700 punt. Check the MoT history and look at the oil and coolant for suspicious discolouration.

Hi,

I have just bought a very pretty Jag S type 2000 for a grand. 1000 miles later, the gearbox light comes on intrmittently, mostly when accelerating uphill. I have not found any forums fot a manual S Type here, so am starting a new thread. The wretched light has now gone out again I am currently in Paris and have been quoted a grand for a fluid change at the Jag garage. This is due to French mechanics perfectionism and love of a job well done (at our expense ha ha) and include the price of a new seal somewhere or other. Or they are taking the p***. So, how much longer have I got before the gearbox packs it in? I would like to give it to my local (Hastings) garage, which give me entire satisfaction every time. ... Read more

I suppose the critical thing is whether it is driving right regardless of the warning light.

Assuming it is the gearbox malfunciton light you probably need to get it code read to find out if the issue is electrical, maybe the torque convertor, maybe slipping gears etc. ...

Hi

I currently drive a Yaris Hybrid (2015) and I admit I do really liek the car, the car is currently on PCP finance and we owe about £1000 more then the car is worth, so are in negative equity. Obviously this wouldn't be an issue if my other half hadn't changed jobs.... Read more

Manchester City Centre to Sheffield City Centre is only about 40 miles via both the Snake and Woodhead.

If you already live on the edge of the Peak I cannot see your wifes commute being 50 to 55 miles each way....

Every noticed when buying a new car that the numbers on the paperwork dont match those agreed with the sales person? Giving you less for your trade-in but a discoute off the new car or the other way round, other charges that were not mentioned creep in but the bottom line stays the same. Ive seen this a few times and not been bothered, thinking it was to do with commision, tax reduction or something like that.
