I recently hired a Peugeot 2008 for 3 days from Belfast airport, upon returning the car they found damage to the left wing mirror. I had not damaged this part during my hire term, but the damage wasn't noted on the car when I picked it up so I accept I'll have to pay for it.

To my amazement i received an invoice for £530 to replace the wing mirror, this was made up of £215 for the part, 3.5 hours of labour at £153, paint at £95.11, the remaining balance unaccounted for in their invoice.... Read more

Contact a Peugeot dealer and ask for a quote to replace a wing mirror and paint it. If the cost is way under the Belfast bill you have some ammunition to dispute the company.

I don't normally like to go above 80, because the car is over 30 years old and the 3 cylinder engine is probably more fragile than most, but I was getting tailgated on the expressway this evening and allowed my speed to creep up around 100. Burning smells ensued (not necessarily from the car, Taiwan has a lot of burning smells) so I got off the expressway and took slower roads home.

Car started making exhaust-blowing noises, which I attributed to a blown exhaust. I'd noticed it had got a lot rustier earlier that day. Stopped but couldn't see a leak in the dark without a torch. Noise got worse. Close to home, seemed to loose a bit of power, so maybe not just a blowing exhaust.... Read more

Some improvement but not there yet.

To misquote Henry Folland, "simplicate and add airtightness". I simplicated a bit and added some airtightness, but maybe not quite enough....

Is there anyone interested in importing Irish cars that are over 3L? Car tax in Ireland is over €1800 for a 3L and over. I know it's more reasonable in the UK. If anyone is interested let me know. At the minute I have 2 Mercedes S500 Lwb. One is 2001 and the other is 2000. Both have UK mot's on them. What are they worth? Read more

Hi there!

I have just purchased a lovely Mazda 2 and can't be happier, the only problem was the car didn't come with a service book.

When I contacted the previous owner he told me the service was all done electronically, is this correct? And if so how would I now obtain the service history now being the new owner.

Hope you can help!

Thanks Read more

Unfortunately its a better system in many ways for you as a buyer, its possible (or was) to buy stamped up to order service books on certain sites, it would take some serious jiggery pokery to enter a false SH on the dealer's computer system.

Agreed, I know someone years ago who bought a used Nissan SX with just the first 2 years services stamped up in the book and his local Nissan dealer stamped and filled in the missing 6 years for a small fee. Hopefully the electronic system will stop this.

Hello, late last year l bought a 2003 BMW 2.5 Z4, as a fun car. Haven't used it a great deal, due to the weather etc, though will when it improves. Its kept garaged & as its not used we leave the hand break off & use chocks. Talking with a mechanic, he recommended premium fuel which, he said, would help with this engine when left standing.

Any thoughts about this? Read more

Prepare for a rant...

I am interested to find the views of the forum on the subject of self-driving cars. My view is that research should be put into making cars safer before investing money into such a ridiculous concept. There has already been a fatality because a driver thought his car could drive itself. It couldn't spot a lorry coming at it from the side, though. Yes, I know it is very clever technology, but just because it is possible, doesn't mean it should be used. We can build build nuclear bombs but...... Read more
