I have received a letter from the DVLA today, ordinary post, not recorded or registered, asking for repayment of £241.66 (allegedly) paid to me in error in 2015. I have no recollection of this but I did change my car and my husbands car around then so may have had some car tax refunded but there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing taxing the new cars and claiming back from old cars going on so I didn't take much notice to be honest. I'll have to check back, but even if they did surely it's their error? Now they are threatening court action, this is the first I've heard of this, can they do this? Read more

After reading all the threads I am inclined to think a thorough check through the official DVLA website would be wise and shouldn't take long. If DVLA deny any contact with the OP then the scam is exposed. If they confirm the situation then proceed with the matter of demanding the official and correct calculation as to how they arrived at the figure. Also an explanation and apology for the great inconvenience now caused to you because of their error. They should have an official appealm procedure, if you appeal then all action against you is frozen until the appeal is adjudicated on. On no account send any payment to anyone until this is proved legitimate.

Just a small point. Alloy wheels of any age can leak through porosity. Alloys are in the main are cast from liquid metal and liquid metal contains disolved gases, when the liquid metal cools and starts to form the solid crystal structure the gas is expeled to the crystal boundries. In sever cases this can build up and form gas inclusions that join together making a porus material. Casting in a partial vacuum reduces the gas content and cooling faster reduces the time gas has to migrate to the crystal bounderies and gives smaller more isolated gas inclusions. Simples

Hello all...

Further to previous post: while wife was on motorway last week with brand new Nissan Note xe with just 230km on clock, all warning lights came on. Pulled over and then went to off ramp where car juddered before she stopped. Nissan informs us that fan belt had come off pulley it runs on because one of the bolts that holds an idler pulley in place sheared off, resulting in fan belt coming off pulley. Sounds pretty bad for a brand new car and also makes you wonder if it's a systematic production issue. Read more

I once attended a Rover 214 with a head gasket gone with 96 miles on the clock. It belonged to a rental company and a bloke had hired to to drive from Portsmouth to Blackburn. He got as far as Winchester when it overheated and stopped.

Is the thing switched off? It might flag up that message if it is.

Is it the stop/start light. If so, try swiching off everything that uses current, (aircon/stereo/lights and see if the stop/start function works.

there needs to be sufficient charge in the battery for it to work properly. read the owners manual and check. perhaps you might need a new battery...(Might, and might not) get someone to do a voltage check, free at halfords or one of the chains..

What if you buy a car brand new from a broker, and it comes under the 40k limit (even though list price would be over) do you still pay the extra tax? Read more

Can anyone explain how Toyoto's new engines can chage from the Atkinson Cycle to the Otto Cycle?

The only info I can see is that it is does via 'electonics', but how when the valves are controlled by mechanically operated camshafts?... Read more

Variable valve timing units controlled by the engine ECU.

Yes but how?...

Evening all,

Letting out the clutch when in 1st and changing to 2nd gear rarely results in a smooth uptake of drive (car jerks backwards and forwards) and I find that I really have to concentrate to get anywhere near a decent shift; other gear changes are fine. I am an experienced driver and haven't had this with other cars that I have had, so don't think the issue is my driving style!... Read more

It is probably the pressure plate or the drive plate that are not running true. had it on one car back in the 70's.

Hello Friends,

Have a new style Astra on 10 plate, 1.6 Sri. have had various problems with the car - one morning passenger footwell was full of water after some heavy rain, handbrake is very tempremental (new electronic style), very unecconomical. Final straw came last week when the car was parked on a slight hill, with my grandson sitting in the back. Sat talking to someone with engine off for a while and when I got out of the car to get something from the boot the car started to roll down the hill. couldnt stop it and only stopped when hit something. The car had already been back to dealer as had complained about the handbrake, but they are saying no fault is found, has anyone else had any similar problems please?... Read more

Maybe if you stopped using the handbrake as a self-pleasuring device it wouldn't be so slippy you failed to apply it correctly?
