"computer driven vehicles will operate more cautious than those driven by people. This will result in years of increased delays "

Surely more cautious = less accidents = less delays ? Read more

Shame about the batch of faulty windscreens, mine has now been replaced. Other than that, it's a great car, 80 mpg is easily achievable! Read more

Hi all, I've been told this is a good site for some good honest advice.

I need a new car and my Dad has a 63 Plate E350 AMG Line Coupe with 32000 on the clock.

Now I know for a fact he is very particular about his cars and doesn't scrimp on a penny so I know the history of the car is good.

My question is would this be a good buy for £15000 if I intend to run it to around 100k? Is there anything I need to be weary of and are these good cars?

Cheers

"It's his dad's car, and a bargain no doubt for that very reason."

Generous Dad. If he was trading it in for a new motor it'd be worth up to £20k depending on what he was looking at.

My 2001 206 1.4 (petrol) 73K miles has just failed MOT quite overwhelmingly on emissions:

Fast idle test: CO: 7.21 (max 0.3), HC 213 (Max 200), Lambda 0.82 (0.970 - 1.030)

2nd Fast idle test: CO: 7.88, HC: 318, Lambda 0.79

Natural Idle test: CO: 7.7

Mechanic thought it would probably be the Cat (which he tells me isn't original) or one of the sensors. Anyone else seen figures as high as this?

Car runs fine otherwise, haven't had any problems whilst driving.

Your knowledge and suggestions would be much appreciated! many thanks in advance! Read more

here is one to try find the engine earths and clean them and then find the earth for the computer and clean that one up 2001 was long time ago, computer earths can cause problems with fuel trims long term topped out short term flatlined one car in question went to 2 mechs who could not find the problem the third checked and cleaned the computer earth and the system came good !

Following our disabled son's recent upgraded PIP award we're considering getting a motability vehicle but are aware there are pros and cons. Having checked some of the relatively recent threads here we're still not sure whether it'd make sense for us.

We have 2 elderly vehicles at present (53 diesel & 07 petrol), the elder of which we've been considering getting shot of for a while and the vast majority of our mileage is now taking him to/from college twice a week which is a round trip of 50 miles or so each time (c.4k pa). However as he's recently started living away from home during the week (term time) and will be for the next 3 years, we'd like to be able to take him on trips further afield at weekends during holidays etc. and our future mileage in any new car would reflect this.... Thanks for clarifying that. I imagine quite a lot of people get caught out in that manner.

Whilst my Dacia Logan continues to do sterling service (nearly a year old and not put a foot wrong), I do miss the CLK and open top motoring. So I have decided, I think, to spend around £1500 on a soft top. Something I can do small jobs on if needed (and they probably will be at this price!), but because I have the Logan it won't matter if it's off the road at any point.

Prices seem low at the moment, so the obvious question is what do I buy? The obvious choice is MX5, the less obvious is MGF. Is there anything else that you think I should look at? Or should I save my money and get some sense instead?!

Any thoughts or words of wisdom greatly received! Read more

Took car in for motorcraft service and mentioned when booking it in i had seen small amount of oil on my drive.
Was called and advised that it was a faulty sump plug ,so obviously agreed for them to change this.
Picked it up and next day noticed oil was still leaking out.
Took it back and was informed it was a turbo pipe of some sort that was leaking, this part wasn,t in stock and was ordered and car booked in for a week later .
After a couple of days noticed that it was difficult to get into reverse gear.
Called them about this and asked if I could take it in for them to investigate as was concerned that the oil maybe leaking from gearbox.
Took it back to them and they changed the Turbo pipe and said clutch was fine but gave it an Amber Warning and to maybe take it back in 4-6 months .
The next day driving to work there was a Red Warning Light saying LOW BRAKE FLUID so called them and spoke to technician who advised me to check fluid level and I found it was low so bought brake fluid and topped it up myself and this got rid of the Warning . I asked them why wasnt this checked in the service I had done and there response was it isn,t included in the service ( I would have thought to check and advise was though).
The next day I once again couldnt get my car into any gear whilst the engine was running but ok when engine was off and had to loan a car to go to work so at this point losing faith in this garage and gave them a poor mark on there ( How did we do Email ) .
Got home that same afternoon and was contacted by there reception to say that my car was booked in the next day to change the Turbo Pipe , I told them this had been done 2 days earlier ( not the best organisation process to say the least ) and that I was totally disappointed with there service and the receptionist then got there Service Leader to call me back.
The service leader made arrangements to come and pick my car up next day.
I spoke to him at the end of the day and he said it was worse than they thought and that it looked like the Master slave clutch cylinder had burst in the gearbox and told me the Worst Case Scenario cost would be £580 I was taken aback by this but he said they would double check it and that the work could not be done due to New Year Bank hols etc until 3rd Jan 2017 and on this day there reception called me with a price of £1890 and at this point I just couldnt speak to her and asked that she checked the costs .
The next day she called and says they where now £2961 .85 has the Technician said I need a new gearbox as well. Read more

Hi. I have a very low tick over, 500 revs, until the car is close to full operating temperature. You can see and feel the tick over gradually get better as the temperature gauge rises. Cold tick over is 1000 revs. Before doing a double Cataclean treatment and an ecu reset this low tick over was all the time regardless of temperature. Post Catalyst readings are high at 0.8 but with more movement of bank 1 sensor indicating a rich mixture. Pre Catalyst 02 sensors are flipping nicely between 0.1 and 0.9, there's even a stop at roughly 0.45 showing the firing order. Mpg has improved after the Cataclean. I just can't work out why there's this low tick over until the engine is hot. It seems that the ecu is confused after it goes closed loop. It must be a sensor of some kind but I can't figure out which one it could be. I'm worried about failing the MOT and ruining the Catalysts. Any ideas please? Cheers Read more

Hi, Dave,

I have exactly the same problem. I think it appeared after I changed the battery....
Could you give us an update how you managed with the issue?
