I tend to hesitate when car buying and over think !! Ages ago I made several posts about Mercedes A W169 which I still like. However, nothing suitable appeared in the area ( do not want to buy away )

I have now thought about Qashqai and Seat Altea which are bigger cars - safer ?... Read more

This is fascinating stuff.

I take on board what Avant says about potential repair bills for A W169 but, since I like the car prepared a reserve fund for repairs ( I realise could spend more on a car but could still get a dodgy one ) IF I get one - however, as I said, planning a few test drives....

What is the best kind of second hand car to buy from a dealership? The 8 types of vehicle (below) often come up as topics for discussion-but which is the best to go for and which is the worst.

1) A two year old vehicle obviously part exchanged to the dealership by a private selling customer.... Read more

By far the best stock we ever got in came in the form of customers 2-5yr old part exchanges against new or nearly cars. These were people who had the funds to maintain their cars properly and were upgrading because they fancied a change and not because their motor was knackered. Best of the lot were cars traded in for another of the same brand, means they were happy with the car and wanted another. Funnily enough though it was often the kind of owner/keeper you'd expect to maintain a car well that does the opposite. As a Mitsubishi franchise we did a lot of business with local farmers and the bulk of cars they traded in were mechanically well maintained but bodily very poor thanks to baked on mud that was never washed off and I'm not just talking about 4wd's and pickups here, they usually ran a second family car. Motability cars also are sold to punters as if it's a good thing but you'd be horrified if you seen the state most of them are returned in. Yes they'll have been serviced correctly but they're all too often abused by keepers and their families, seen as a freebie car they don't care about.

Snakey

In this day and age where eating an apple or taking a sip of water at the wheel is regarded as dangerous, and using a phone is extremely dangerous I find it amazingly hypocritical that a local council (South Tyneside) has erected a massive 20 foot square advertising board/TV in the central reserveration of a dual carriageway.

This is a council who like all the others bleat about their poverty, yet this monstrosity must have cost a fortune and its sole purpose is to display adverts. As it is basically a large TV it is massively distracting as it is so bright, and the adverts change frequently. Its not used to display anything useful, just who has a sale on or where to buy the best pizzas.... Read more

It has to be superbright Snakey, otherwise how are going to read the advert, your eyes will already be screwed up tight and your night vision history due to the 4 billion watts of DRL HID and other completely unecessary front lights you are constantly assaulted by, not forgetting the ever brighter fast flickering LED brake lights designed to sear your eyeballs.

You know it makes sense, a committee approved it....

An immediate custodial sentence is a distinct possibility.

Presumably along with the latest clutch of offences is driving whilst disqualified. He would hve received a minimum of twelve months disqualificationfor the first offence. What is the breath (or blood or urine) reading for the latest Excess Alcohol offence?

Now with three rapidly growing teenage boys Mrs FB needs a bigger car. She wants a c. 2007 Ford Galaxy. Maximum budget £4,000 and £1,000 on top contingency for any unexpected bills other than routine servicing. She has experience of driving a Transit so size of the thing doesn't faze her. Mileage 12,000 - 15,000 a year, 3 days a week short journeys, the remainder 40 and 60 mile main road round trips to work, with hoildays in UK making up the rest.

Should we go 2.0 petrol or 1.8/2.0 diesel? We are not speed merchants. And one more thing, she quite fancies an auto. Are they reliable? Maintenance will be carried out by our trusty local independent garage.... Read more

Had another look at a Mazda 5 this morning and a Mondeo estate. Mondeo estate has more room with seats folded and as we really want to be rid of trailer an estate of that size now looks favourite. Bigger than I'd like but it will be Mrs FB mainly driving it. Happy Wife = Happy Life.

Hello,

I bought a 57 plate Yaris SR 1.8 a couple of years ago, and now I'm looking to trade it in.
I'm probably looking for something a little bigger, and with the same punch as the Yaris and have a budget up to £10K.
I don't know if the Yaris qualifies as a hot-hatch or not, but guess that's probably the market I'm in. I've regularly driven a 64 plate Mazda 3, bit found it really sluggish.

Looking for a couple of recommendations please so I don't waste too much time trawling the showrooms!
