I had Engine Malfunction come up on the display and took the car to Ford but they said its likely to be a faulty sensor and reset it. It happened again and this time they reset it and showed me how to reset it in future. My 2008 Mondeo has now just died. The garage have found that there was 9 Ltrs of oil in the engine and it is now beyond economical repair. After having a sample analyzed it turns out that there was diesel in the oil and a lot of it.

My question is how has the diesel got into the oil? Read more

The diesel gets into the oil when the diesel particle filter (DPF) is regenerating, i.e. burning off the soot that it traps in the exhaust. The ECU causes extra diesel to be injected during this phase to start the burn-off happening in the DPF canister. If the DPF isn't regenerating properly, then the ECU will keep trying and injecting diesel, and this surplus diesel eventually finds its way into the lubricating oil past the piston rings.

The Mondeo does have an engine oil quality sensor which SHOULD indicate when the oil has been diluted. I guess the message in the dash was trying to tell you this. ...

I've had this car since March and generally been pretty happy with it until yesterday. On Saturday I drove it and everything was fine. Sunday I tried to drive it - pushed the button and nothing. Then 'Engine Malfunction' warning and then 'Immobiliser Active' message. I took out a Ford warranty when I bought it. The car was taken to my local ford dealer - not where I bought it from and they said its water ingress into the wiring loom and it's corroded part of the loom that connects to the battery - anyhow its £384 to fix it....and it's not covered by their warranty as its external factors! To me that is rubbish - if the car has a leak that's corroding stuff then its down to how the car has been put together. Its not like I live in an area with especially corrosive rain!

The dealer said that obviously they can't guarantee that this won't happen elsewhere on the car, but they will reseal it where its occurred at present.... Read more

Another update - The local dealers have fixed the car. the bill was actuallt 384. he says it looks like water has been getting in over a period of time and agreed with me that I should go back to the original dealership and complain and get some kind of refund.

As I say, my main issue is what if there are other parts of the wiring loom that have corroded and that i'm not going to be faced with more and more bills over time. Then there is the safety aspect. What if certain parts of the car decide to stop working due to the wiring failing?

Was on a slight incline and hadn't put van in gear when parked up. Got out of van and heard a very loud click, turned around and saw my van slowly rolling off. It damaged a residential wall, thankfully there was no one around and no one got injured. I put my details through letterbox of house, and have since had their wall repaired.

I took my van to my local garage to have it checked out. They checked the handbrake and said that one of the teeth on the ratchet was missing. I took a pic of it. I then took it to the local volkswagen dealer garage where I had had it serviced a few weeks ago. (Its only two years old, purchased on a five year lease package through Volkswagen) I left it with them to see if there was any other reason that the handbrake had failed other than me not leaving it in gear. When going back to collect They told me that they had tightened the brake cable as it seem a bit loose, but they never mentioned the missing tooth on ratchet. I hadn't told them that another garage had noticed this. When I did mention it to them, they said that they hadn't seen a missing tooth and from my pic, said it just looked like grease to them. They mentioned that I should have left it in gear. So basically, my own fault. When I was given back my van keys, they had left it on a particularly steep slope, but not in gear. I pointed it out to the mehcanic, he just shrugged his shoulders. After they tightened the handbrake cable, I notice when I used my van how it felt much better when engaging the break, it didn't have to be raised as high as before, which was very high. Basically, it feels like a complete new handbrake. ... Read more

Well I'm glad your vehicles all have good disc parking brakes, but whilst disc brakes may dissipate heat more efficiently which is better as a service brake, drums have the advantage of greater surface contact and a self-servo action. It is mechanically easier to pull apart than to push together. That is why drum brakes are better as parking brakes.

When testing the parking brake on the rollers during the MOT test drum parking brakes out-perform discs every time.

Hi everyone,

I'm buying a car from cargiant but the history of the car says CRO ONLY. I wonder what this really means and whether there could be some hidden information that I can't check on this CRO only history check.... Read more

Managed Motorway System (MMS) / Active Traffic Management (ATM) are some of the other names, as above with variable speed limits and possible All Lanes Running (ALR) / Hard Shoulder Running (HSR) to effectively "widen" the motorway at peak periods.

It seems to work well on the M42 and M6 in the Midlands but it can't perform miracles.

Hello,

I tried search on this specific problem, but I cannot find any answers or may be I am searching with outdated lingo. So, I will explain the situation and will wait for honorable members to help me. I own a 08 Corsa Ecoflex. Everything was alright until this one day the battery had run flat. I jumped started it and it did start off and ran well. But I was not able to switch it off. The car kept running even after I removed the key. It eventually did switch off. But, the dashboard comes on with all the dashboard indicators switched on by itself at random times without the key in. I believe this is what is causing the battery to run flat. I took the car to a mechanic who suggested I change the ignition barrel and it has to be done in a vauxhall garage only. I was sat in the car yesterday night in silence, I could hear few crackling noise before the dashboard switches itself on.. and then again some noise before it switches itself off. This happens with or with out the key in the keyhole. Anything I can do to diagnose and fix the problem before I sign up to spend big money on it ? ... Read more

Hi,

Today, I was cruising at around 50 km/h in third gear and I needed to accelerate a bit more. It was not so hard acceleration but more than what I usually do. After the car speeded up a bit, I was going to pull it to the fourth gear but I realized that it does't engage anymore to the 4th gear. I stopped the car and I realized that it doesn't also engage in 2nd and reverse. So basically, the gear doesn't move at all below side. I have read some topics about non-engaging gears but there the problem is described as, for example, you can pull the gear to the fourth gear position but it doesnt engage. In my case, I can't move it to the fourth gear position at all.... Read more

Yes, not to difficult. Get someone to put it in and out of gear while you are watching the cables, if one is moving in and out the ferrule on the end is not gripping the cable, you can crimp it up using a pair of mole grips, you need to get it tight so adjust them until closed then squeeze hard until they lock, you may have to do this in a couple of places.

Figured out a major cause of my issues.
Went to replace the fuel filter on saturday, and discovered some cowboy had removed it. Had the car 4 months now and never thought to check. God knows how much longer than that she's been running without one.
Replaced it with Redex Advanced and she's running better now, still not starting great, but ill try another dose and see how she goes.
