The "engine" warning light came on yellow recently during a long motorway trip to Cornwall. It went off again 2 days later. It returned on the way home. It has stayed on. There is no apparent loss of performance or increase in fuel consumption. Local dealer has said it is the DPF and it needs replacing at £2500!! I am doubtful of the diagnosis because the DPF light has not come on, and the "engine block" warning came on after several hours at high motorway speeds when i would expect the DPF to clear itself not clog up, and the mileage is only 45000. The price seems astronomic too. Could the dealer be right? I expected him to say it was the Engine Management System, or some other problem, not the DPF. Read more

As others have stated, the DPF shouldn't need replacing yet, if the mileage is genuine.

Much more likely to be a sensor fault. Take it to a trusted VW independant who knows what he is doing....

Am I right in thinking that because lambda probes ( indirectly) control petrol/air mixtures, that changing an air filter won't affect fuel consumption, and the state of the air filter only effects the maximum power/torque available? I'm asking as I'm considering changing one before its service interval as the car in question is using a bit more fuel than normal. I appreciate that winter petrol has a negative effect on economy. This thread has run its course, and I hope Brum feels that his original question has been answered. Note Hillman's helpful post a few up from here which is still relevant.

After 70k miles the stop start is failing to restart the car. Happens about once a week and is sporadic. Audi agent has tried to fix without success as no failure code is logged so they don't know why.
Last time took 3 goes to restart.
Any help appreciated.
Also how do I permanently turn it off? Agent claims this is not possible. Read more

In general BMW's need their batteries coding and yes stop/start requires a battery with larger capacity, so costs more.

In general if the battery is low on charge, then the car should not stop engine in the first place. Thu it sounds to me the car is turning over but not starting? i.e. maybe a hot start issue?...

From April 2013 the cruise control is not working properly. After cold start it works for several minutes and then kicks out. Reprogramming, replacing combination switch and ignition lock was to no avail. The Mercedes garage can not find a solution. There are no fault messages in the computer, only when the cruise control kicks out and I press the speed limiter: "Defect speedtronic, visit workshop". After switching off the engine the message disapeared: "no malfunctions". What can we do to repair this fault? Read more

If tyres were replaced it was done by a Mercedes Benz garage, so I assume the answer is Yes.

It something i would check on before doing anything else, correct size should be in the handbook and, together with pressures, inside the fuel filler cap....

Hi, just thinking of changing my 2001 VW Sharen 1.9 TDI for a newer S-Max or Galaxy TDI, does anyone have any opinions on what they think is best, ie. maintaince / fuel comsumption / insurance / values. Thanks. Sparky100. Read more

Smax is the more popular, and I expect will hold its value better.

Neither have as much practical space as the car you have. SMax considerably less so. Test drive to decide.

Hello everyone,

Is it normal for car salesman to want to talk about finance first when you have expressed interest in a car. I booked an appointment to see a couple of cars and the first thing the salesmen wanted to do was sit down and talk finance before i had seen the car. They refused to give any discounts on the price and really made the experience unpleasant. Any thoughts? Read more

That salesman won't last long - he won't sell any cars. He was probably one of those who think people who just want to have a look and ask questions are time-wasters.

They're not of course: they may come back to buyin a few weeks or months if their initial experience was a good one.

Ford and General Motors used to leave their European subsidiaries to design and market their own products - and still do to some extent.

Those days have long gone - Ford are well into their "One Ford" having introduced the '92 Mondeo as a world car with the '68 Escort being the first Ford Europe car to replace models previously developed independently in UK and Germany....

During my tenure the driver's side window dropped into the door

I had that with the one I owned. The glass was only secured to the winding mechanism with a large plastic peg which had a couple of lugs to stop it falling off. I soon fixed it by drilling a hole through the peg and putting a split pin through it. It never fell down again....
