I was recently sent a NIP for a speeding offence. I asked for a copy of the photographic evidence and within the picture there is one car in the inside lane slightly ahead of me plus there is another in the second picture which is just passing the camera. Would my detected speed be effected by there being two other moving cars in the photos? Read more

It's worth finding out if it was a Gatso fixed cam, or a mobile camera. The mobile cameras are calibrated regularly so you haven't got much of a leg to stand on if that's the case. The Gatso cameras are being neglected around the country. Many are broken, many don't have film, and many that are working and have film, haven't been calibrated in a long time. My father recently avoided a speed awareness course after being caught doing 38 in a 30 zone. The camera hadn't been calibrated since 2009 (he was caught in November of last year).

Hi!

I'm currently working on a head gasket change on a friend's Bravo SX 1.2 16V (51 plate). I purchased the camshaft locking bolts with two piston height gauges. I turned the crankshaft until the piston heights were similar then just turned a bit each way till the locking tools would go into the camshaft grooves and tighten up to lock the camshaft in place.

However, once the camshaft was locked I noticed that the piston gauges aren't exactly the same. There's about 2-3mm difference (pistons 1-2). I tried pistons 1-3 and they were the same.

The timing belt is off, does this mean I need to make an adjustment to the crankshaft?

Many thanks,

I seem to have an issue with my fuel guage.... Read more

dieselnut

Sounds to me like your issue isn't so much a problem with the guage, but that the engine runs rough when the fuel level is low.

I would suspect your in-tank fuel pump has either failed or isn't running at full pressure. So when the tank is low the 2nd pump on the engine struggles to pull enough fuel through.

hi all i have a year 2000 fiesta 1.25 zetec with 123000 miles on the clock, its always used oil and been holding back when you put your foot down, about a month ago i did a long journey at motorway speeds for nearly 2 hours there and 2 hours back, the day after on start up it kicked a cloud of smoke out of the exhaust but has never done it since while starting up, now the car smokes bad after a long period on engine overun intermitantly and when you put your foot down it now holds back with a 'pinking' sound and clouds of smoke constantly , has anybody any ideas whether this fault is something like valve stem seals, or am i just looking at a tired engine, its difficult to tell colour of smoke though rear view mirror but i'm assuming this is where the oil is going Read more

goodwinsally67

Thanks for the replies, The smoke just looks light grey through the rear view mirror, i thought it probably would be valve stem seals but i remember my old 1600 cortina suffering with stem seals and that used to kick a cloud of smoke out on start up which my fiesta isn't doing apart from the once mentioned before, which is why i wondered if it could be something else with it pinking and holding back when accelerating hard , can the stem seals be done with the head still on. i made a tool years ago and did the seals on my cortina with the head on, if not am i looking at a head skim as well. just trying to weigh up whether its worth getting into engine strip on an old car where one thing will probably lead to another

I almost certainly have to replace the gearbox on my Xsara Picasso 1.6 HDi 110 (late 2004) -- and would expect do clutch at the same time (75k miles; also it is a bi-mass flywheel).
Cost is a very big question so second-hand gearbox is my only option.

I understand the same clutch is used on the models I list below - can you tell me if the exact same GEARBOX is also swapable between any of these models and mine?
Or any other car I have not listed?

Clutch common to 1.6 HDi 110 bhp models of:
CITROEN Berlingo, C3,C4,C5,Xsara Picasso;
PEUGEOT 1007,206,207,307
Is the gearbox also common to any of these?

Many thanks! Read more

that's dual mass flywheels for you!!

have you looked around for a solid flywheel conversion?

The C02 is higher but long term your better of with a relaxed engine than the ford eco boost - how long can you expect to get out of a a turbo on a 1.6 petrol engine at 150bhp even if you follow HJ advice of allowing the turbo to cool down after a run (which I doubt 95% of the user's will ever do)?

My new Seat Leon 1.4 TSi has 140 PS and with 185 lbs/ft of torque between 1500 and 3500 rpm it is a superb drive, best petrol engine I have ever owned. 119 CO2's (£30 RFL) and 46 mpg average so far in mixed running, seen 52 mpg on a decent run. Cruising is very relaxed as is day to day driving. No need to go over 3000 rpm to get decent performance, crusing at 70 mph is only 2500 rpm. The Avensis 1.8 we test drove needed thrashing to get decent performance, not very relaxing at all.

In 17 years of owning cars with turbo's I have never yet allowed the car to idle before turning off. If I have been driving "enthusiastically" I slow down for the last couple of miles before journeys end. I have yet to have a problem with a turbo....
