The C02 is higher but long term your better of with a relaxed engine than the ford eco boost - how long can you expect to get out of a a turbo on a 1.6 petrol engine at 150bhp even if you follow HJ advice of allowing the turbo to cool down after a run (which I doubt 95% of the user's will ever do)?

My new Seat Leon 1.4 TSi has 140 PS and with 185 lbs/ft of torque between 1500 and 3500 rpm it is a superb drive, best petrol engine I have ever owned. 119 CO2's (£30 RFL) and 46 mpg average so far in mixed running, seen 52 mpg on a decent run. Cruising is very relaxed as is day to day driving. No need to go over 3000 rpm to get decent performance, crusing at 70 mph is only 2500 rpm. The Avensis 1.8 we test drove needed thrashing to get decent performance, not very relaxing at all.

In 17 years of owning cars with turbo's I have never yet allowed the car to idle before turning off. If I have been driving "enthusiastically" I slow down for the last couple of miles before journeys end. I have yet to have a problem with a turbo....

The test of the BMW 518 got me thinking, its hardly any more expensive than an equivalently spec VW passat or even a top of the range Skoda Superb.

Its also little more expensive than their own 3 series.... Read more

I have got a Passat CC so I have nothing against them.

I have test driven a BMW 520 and really enjoyed the experience, it just feels like its really comfortable and much better to drive than any other car I'd tried....

After 4 to 5 thousand miles of my Vauxhall loosing power I have now been informed that Vauxhalls have found that those that stop and start their vehicles will have to have their engine decoked. Does anyone know how much this could cost although I have this car under warrenty and knowing my car will stop and start alot because Im a Driving Instructor, could I find this happening again when the warrenty runs out.

Vauxhalls have just notified all dealers of this potential problem especially with Driving School car.... Read more

I was unfortunate enough to have used a Corsa C with the 1.3 diesel as an instruction car. About the only thing it didn't need was a decoke in 50 k miles, alternator failed, wouldn't start in cold weather, steering wheel loose, clock spring failed, indicators failed, kept going into limp mode, n/s front suspension collapsed, fault lights on and off the whole time When I complained for the nth time to the oaf behind the service reception desk he shouted at me that "these cars are only for doing the shopping in-what do you expect?"

Goodbye Vauxhall - Hallo Honda ever since.

Just a general question.

Took my 6 year old Focus CC turbo diesel (38000 miles) in for a service today. I knew the brakes needed looking at (advisory on my last service) and I requested an air-con check.... Read more

Many thanks, yes this was a main Ford dealer.

It's still an ouch on the wallet though :-)

Had anyone had the unfortunate experience of buying a car that they later found out was sold with a fake MOT certificate?... Read more

Yeah, with a mobile phone. Easy

And how do I do that? who do I speak to? not everyone carts round a computer phone - I prefer a phone that lasts weeks on a charge.

Hi, I have an Astra 02 reg, 1.6 club. recent new ecu a couple of weeks ago but doesn't go at all now. Have fitted a new coil but still no spark. Have also tested the power to coil pack which is 12 volts. Has codes 0351 0352 0353 0354. rpm sitting at 200 when turning over so know cam sensor is ok. Can you please help a novice? Is there anything else it could be apart from a duff ecu? Read more

Has anyone ever had this happen on a Vauxhall Vecta C 1.9 TDCI SRI (150). On 2 occassions I have started the car, and the clutch is very heavy and when I press it the pedal collapses to the floor and the car cuts out. Once this has happened you can't get it in gear or start the car. I can lift the pedal back up and re engage the clutch, and the car starts and then works fine for a number of days before the problem reoccurs. It had a new clutch and dual mass Flywheel fitted 18 months ago. It is puzzling me as I didn't think the clutch not working would stop the car from starting. Anyone any ideas? Read more

I can't help you regarding the starting but I seem to remember when I had some warranty work done on my '52 reg 2.2 LS 9 years ago the mechanic mentiond that they had done something to the clutch pedal as well. I wasn't charged for this so I can only assume that the factory had modified something because there had been problems. Try asking a main dealer, I'm sorry to be so vague but as nobody has responded to you I thought this might help.
