Good evening
I have owned a good number of cars in my time and apart from a couple of vintage ones, each one has been front wheel drive where the necessity to replace tyres (through wear) has been that of approx 3 front to 1 rear. I assume that the reason for this is that the front wheels are both pulling the mass weight and also turning the vehicle also - both actions thus creating wear and tear.... Read more
Hi all, I'm new to the forum and wondered if someone could help me with a diesel engine question.
I've spotted a VW Golf E SDI I like. It looks reasonably well cared for, and only about 70000 miles for a car over 10 years old. Unfortunately the service history is a bit patchy. The general condition of the car suggests the receipts were lost or not filed rather than the servicing was never done, however, I'm slightly wary in case it's the latter.... Read more
Thanks for all the helpful replies.
I checked the mileage records on previous MOT tests, and paid for some more mileage checks that pre-dated computerisation of MOT tests. All of the mileage checks were in order, and the gearbox is still fairly tight (gear stick can't be moved in a large circle, unlike my old car), so I decided the car was genuine mileage in reasonable condition and bought it....
I've just sold my car for scrap on the Friday just gone. I found the V5 form beforehand in my car file, so filled out the relevant section, gave it to the scrap dealer, who filled out his section. He took his bit away and left me my section so I can send it to the DVLA, which I was planning on sending to them first thing on Monday to notify them on the change of ownership. All good so far.
However, I was just going through a bunch of paperwork looking for my RAC correspondence, when I was shocked to come across another V5 form (for the same owner - me - and same vehicle) which I don't remember seeing previously.
On reading more, it appears this is a new red V5 form. So now I'm worried that I've used an old (and possibly invalid) V5 form for this sale.
So I'm worried and don't know what to do next. Should I 'fess up to the DVLA and see what they say? What's the worst that can happen? Or should I just return the original section that I had intended to and see what happens next?
This was an honest mistake, but I am worried as to what happens next.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks. Read more
Just return the form to DVLA with a note if you really want. but the "old" v5 will do the job perfectly well.
Thanks! That sounds good, and will probably be what I'll do. Was just worried that I could get in trouble with DVLA somehow because I'd used an old V5 in the sale of the car. We'd had the car for 20 years, so I hadn't even had think about log books for a long time.
My son recently bought a Mk2 Mondeo Verona (2000 X) and has replaced the original stereo with a new one. However, the new stereo isn't remembering its settings which suggests that the continous power feed isn't connected (or has blown its fuse). The Haynes manual doesn't cover the stereo wiring and we don't know which wire is the continuous power feed! Any help on where to look, what colour it is etc would be greatly appreciated (and would save him having to pay someone to get it sorted). Also, where is the fuse located for this?
The new stereo is a Sony and he bought the adapter wiring harness from Halfords. Everything works great apart from the memory on the stereo - we know the continuous feed was working prior to fitting the new stereo as he didn't have to put in the key code every time he drove. I'm wondering if its the fuse as he didn't disconnect the battery before fitting the new stereo...... Read more

Hi Everyone
I'm after an automatic diesel saloon and I think its a choice of the above 2 models, they both seem to have good reliability ratings however i've seen bad reports of both, what would your recommendations be if comparing reliability between the 2?... Read more
My MB indy looks after (from brand new, that tells you about main dealer servicing) several private hire E class 220 Diesels, and i know the owner of the cars well too.
Bought new and serviced old school they usually get sold with just north of 400k miles on them and invariably only require good servicing to reach that (no shortage of buyers either), last time i saw one in there it was just coming up to 400k and had started smoking, two new injectors cured that....
My other half's Carisma, parked outside our house, has been written off by a silly girl hurrying to work.
It has almost a full tank of diesel, and we're wondering if we can get it out before the insurance co takes it away.
Our local motor shop can supply a suitable pump for £10, so we're good to go... unless the Carisma has an anti-siphon device. I understand this is usually a cone of wire mesh in the inlet pipe.
Does anyone know if diesel Carismas have such a thing?
Thanks in anticipation.

Yes it does but have a go with a garden hose in case you get lucky, you might be able to get in via the fuel level sensor and pick up pipe, and you might be able to disconnect the filler pipe as it enters the tank and feed a pipe in there.
I'd be more inclined to either jerry rig up some sort of electric fuel pump to the pipe on the inlet side of the fuel filter, or to disconnect the fuel return pipe and let the engine tick over whilst pumping the fuel into cans or another car, however it might take a couple of hours depending how quickly the return flows....
i need to replace my diesel pump how can i tell if a second hand 1 is the right 1 ???
you must replace like for like same part numbers and ecu numbers,if it is the single plug than is does not need to be coded the twin plug ones are coded so you must have the security code from the car you removed the pump from and the car it will be going in
Please can you tell me how to remove the fuel filter housing due to replaced fuel filter 3 times and still have a diesel leak on my diesel 1.5 106 on a R plate Read more
659 has said pretty much everything there is to say about it but, I would just add one thing.
When you have removed the fuel filter, Take a mirror and use it to look at the mating surface where the filter seats onto. On a couple of occasions I have seen filters that have left their old sealing ring behind and people have not noticed.
My DiL owns a Sony Vario laptop but she has a problem with it and the wi-fi in her house.
In all other locations we've tried, the laptop will connect to the relevant local wi-fi signal and she can then go onto the internet but at her place, the laptop always connects to the wi-fi, (router supplied by Sky), this all shows up in the laptop but we cannot get onto the internet. All we get are Local Access Only notices, Explorer comes back with a non connect message.... Read more
In the end, the DiL wired the laptop straight into the router and that is where it will be for some time to come.
Many thanks for all the advice offered....
Hi Guys
Was after some advice, I've currently got an Accord 2.2 Ex 2006 manual which i'm happy with and has been super reliable, the only reason I'm after a new car is because I desperately want an automatic.... Read more
The auto box in my 2010 diesel Accord saloon is the best I have ever had in any car, and I've had many, including several other Hondas. We find the front seats very comfortable, although the engine is a bit agricultural when stone cold.
Average fuel consumption is 45-48mpg, rising to over 50 on a motorway run, when the adaptive cruise control seems to improve it even further....

I've heard it said by technicians that cars imported from the Far East are strapped down very tightly on the ship and even if the alignment is done at the port of arrival they really need time to settle properly - so always a good idea to have a full alignment done at, say, 1000 miles.
