Bmw 5 Series - New BMW 518 - Mr Fox

The test of the BMW 518 got me thinking, its hardly any more expensive than an equivalently spec VW passat or even a top of the range Skoda Superb.

Its also little more expensive than their own 3 series.

could it in fact be a better buy than any of the VW group cars above as its likely to depreciate much less ...

Not to mention being a better drive and have more desirable image.

Except you'll always know your car is 'fur coat and no knickers' - a 4Cyl BMW is horrendous enough (chasing company car tax dodgers) but a 518d.... I suppose it's not a diesel convertible, thank goodness for small mercies. I'll bet most are de-badged to save their owners' blushes.

I can't find where a 518 and Passat overlap, or come close, in price for similar specs.

What versions are you comparing?

I know what you mean, but 145bhp and 265ft-lb is a lot better than the early 90s E34 518 petrol, which had an asthmatic 115bhp and 125ft-lb ... in fact, it matches the old 525tds for power and far exceeds it on torque.

But I wouldn't have one, either :)

Don't quite get this image thing, must be me.

How much can use you use in excess of the perfectly adequate performance this car would have in the UK, basically you can't unless you want to swiftly collect some points.

Would people really feel ashamed to 'only' have the money or company position (image either way) to buy/use a 4 pot BMW so would debadge to save their embarrasment, dear Lord i thought that disappeared in the 80's or has it re-emerged in the wannabe celebrity century.

Seems a decent enough motor to me if you like modern cars, i don't.

Clearly the image thing is all about vanity.

Buying either a BMW or VAG product with personal money suggests that either the buyer has not done their homework or has more money than sense. You don't have to look far around the Internet to see that these marques are at best no better than any other brand for reliability and their dealers are not helpful once the short warranty has ended.

If you are looking to save money there are far better value for money cars on the market.

Your post implies that VAG aren't up to the job. My experience of ownership is somewhat different, I have a Passat and have posted before about its history. 80.000+ miles and has been regularly serviced, initially by VW and latterly by a good indie who charges an average of £100 each service over the three service cycle. The only outlay other than that has been for a cam belt and kit (£185 fitted) new parking brake switch (£48 fitted), brake fluid change (£35) and tyres (now on 3rd set, just fitted). So apart from the switch, no surprises. Still has original wipers, pads and discs all round, original DMF and clutch despite using it to tow a caravan, covering 5,000 miles towing. It has spent two years as my wife's town car and two and a half years as my commuter car. Passed its last MoT with no advisories and returns 50-55 mpg (on supermarket dregs).

Bad things. The dash creaks when its cold.

Overall it has cost me about the same as the Mazda that we had for just over two years. I wouldn't use the VW dealer I bought it from for anything (but then again the only thing I would use the Mazda dealer for is target practice), but the VW garage which serviced it whilst under warranty were very reasonable. I don't expect it to last forever, but I think so far it has been very satisfactory and I will keep it as long as it is economically viable.

Where does this indicate that I haven't done my homework, or have more money than sense? Looking for a helpful dealership and help outside of warranty? Try Toyota (unless you have the automated manual gearbox or a 1.8 running on oil petrol mix), try Mazda (unless you have a 2l diesel)

Seems to be the usual issue about perceived quality and image. We have a huge marketing industry devoted to this whole branding business, and an advertising one which hangs on tight to its coattails.

Who'd buy a shirt for £175, or £15. We can do both and our choice says who we think we are. Or................skiers choose Val D'Isere over Andorra; fishermen choose the Spey over the Thames; shooters go to Yorkshiree not the south downs; sartorial fuss pots buy bespoke from Jermyn Street over M&S; appearance snobs will pay £60 for a haircut, others £12 at the station barbers.

The fundamental though is, does one get more for a larger sum of money? In the above examples, I'd guess yes (except for the haircut at Trumpers).

But BMW and the others spend little time explaining the real differences between their cars and VW for instance. Are the parts better made? Is the carpet better wool? Are the hoses tougher? Is the gearbox less prone to faults? One could go onnnnnnnnnn.........

I have got a Passat CC so I have nothing against them.

I have test driven a BMW 520 and really enjoyed the experience, it just feels like its really comfortable and much better to drive than any other car I'd tried.

The Passat CC GT is 29 K in its basic form 2.0 TDI manual gearbox, and in the HJ test of the BMW he stated that it was below 30 K that is close enough.

A Skoda Superb can also be in this price range if you take the top model.

The BMW 518 has all the same featues on the standard Spec, that these top models have. So I think the comparison is fair.

I really don't give a monkey's what anyone else thinks about what car I am driving, its their problem.

What I am alluding to is purely and simply based on my experience, that you will enjoy driving a BMW 5 series more...
