Hi new to the fourm so apologises if this is in the wrong section.

Been looking at a new BMW 1 series I wanted a 116i but the dealer is currently offering me a pre registered 114i with 5 years servicing and a comfort package for £17,885 is this a good deal or could I get it for a bit less Read more

I had a 118d for 5 years, great car. The 143 PS was adequate, a 114i with 115PS would be a slug.

Recently changed it for a new Mk3 Seat Leon 1.4TSi. 140PS and less weight than a 1 series makes for a quick car and with 184lbs/ft of torque between 1500 and 3500 rpm it has diesel like pick up in the gears. Also has diesel like economy, a genuine calculated 46mpg so far in the usual mixed motoring, over 52 mpg on one longish run. £30 a year RFL is a good saving over most similar petrols as well. Taking petrol/diesel fuel price into account my running costs are virtually identical comape#ared to the 118d, not bad for a petrol....

Hi,

Hopefully some one can offer some advice..

I am going to get 21k + 400p/month car allowance + all fuel paid company fuel card.

What are the implications tax-wise i am presuming from research that;

1. The car allowance as it is rolled into my salary will be deducted @ 20%. I.e£320.00 in hand.

2. The fuel card will be seen as benefit in kind, how then will this affect monthly cash in hand amount, given that i estimate 25k business miles & 5k personal.

3. As i am effectively purchasing a car in my name i can get 45p x 10000 miles & 25p thereafter End Of Year tax rebate. Is this figure right £8250 annually.

Also;

As i am currently driving a car valued under 2k this may be a good opportunity to get on the pcp ladder so to speak.. Here comes the head in the clouds bit.. Feel free to tell me:)
A 2013 new 318d bmw sport will cost 2k up front 400 month, inc servicing 50k miles etc..
While i will have to cover some of the amount myself after three years (warranty expires) i can trade in at a hirer value than say a 90kmiles Hyundai i40 tourer?? What am i missing?

Again, I don't want to comment further on the fuel aspect of the contract as I can only assume that HMRC have agreed a formula with the employer.

The £400 per month car allowance will be classed as a "Round Sum Allowance" and, as such, you pay taxand Class 1 NICs on it. Additionally, the employer will pay Class 1A NICs at the Employer rate of 13.8%. Hence the allowance costs the employer £5,462 per annum to give you a net. £3,264 per annum as in previous post....

I wouldn't want to crash in any older car, standards move on all the time - good reason for never buying older cars,

It is a reason, but fairly well down my list. A better reason for buying an 'older car' is that it may have better all-round visibility, making a crash less likely. The stylist's bug has infected almost all makers since about 2000, so that it is hard to see over that high fat bonnet or out of those poky rear windows. Those are standards that I wish would stop moving on.

We test drove a ix35 CRDi 4x4 Premium when they first came on the market and found it to be a great car. Only thing that prevented us from buying was the predicted delivery date.

It was quiet, comfortable (even on the 18" rims), the engine was great and it handled nicely. At the time we had a C-Max which was a well regarded car for ride and handling and we did not find the ride poor, we had it for 1/2 a day and used it on all types of roads....

We had our personal first episode of car crime in High Peak today.
When I went out to the car I found that I'd carelessly omitted to lock it last night.
When I opened it I saw that the collection of old petrol receipts that I keep in the cupholder in the centre console had been taken out and sorted, some on the driver's seat and some on the passenger's seat. The windscreen scraper from the main compartment of the centre console was on the driver's seat together with my prescription driving glasses and SWMBO's sun glasses. The fuse box lid was hanging loose. Surprisingly, the front recess of the centre console, with my collection of old parking tickets hiding the change for parking machines, was untouched. A thief would at least have taken the cash.

SWMBO went down to the kitchen to take her tablets at 04:00 am, switching the light on. She had also switched on the garage lights to check whether or not it was raining. We think that the would-be thief was disturbed by the lights coming on and did a bunk.
SWMBO thinks that the attempt was adventitious, the thief going around trying car doors until they found one that was unlocked.
I had the crook bar on the steering wheel so the car couldn't have been taken (I think !!).

I'll really have to make an effort to check the car in the evening. Problem is, sometimes when I know that I've locked the car - and checked it - it has been unlocked when I next go to it. This happens most often in supermarket car-parks. I think that somebody's key code is too close to mine.

The only previous attempt was more than thirty years ago in Zambia. Then, the thief tried to lever out the quarter lights on both driver and passenger sides but didn't have enough leverage, so only buckled the chrome window trim. After that I left the car unlocked so that thieves could gain access without difficulty (and consequential damage). The garden was fully enclosed so a thief couldn't get the car out onto the road.

A neighbour with a recent Toyota Auris (not sure which engine) has had a complete engine/transmission change and 2-year warranty extension - and been told it's part of a major issue.

Anyone heard anything about this? Read more

I find it quite hard to imagine why you would require the replacement of both engine and transmission, it would need a catastrohic failure to cause such a problem.

Looks like a typical spam to me....

I would really appreciate any advice here as I am tearing my hair out. The VSA warning light has been on for years and I didn't bother with it as it didn't affect the MOT. It now does. Honda said 2k, so I got the part taken out (ABS modulator) and sent it to ECU testing who repaired it.

My mechanic then put it back in but the light is still on so he checked the fault codes and there are four new ones coming up along with the two old one. ECU Testing advised him to clean sensors and reset but no luck.... Read more

Thanks all. It is of course 2006, sorry about that. It's a ex I-ctdi 2204 manual diesel. The modulator was returned on Friday to ECU testing and they have just phoned to say they have retested it and there is nothing wrong. They have suggested my mechanic is putting it in wrong. I don't think so as he's a Honda specialist (independent) and he's refitted new modulators before. Would an authorised Honda service look at it do you think or will they say No you shouldn't have taken it out? So annoying have been off the road for two weeks and MOT has just expired. Please be gentle with me in case you haven't noticed I don't know anything about cars! I really appreciate your help.

if your mechanic is a specialist, he should know that fault code 66-1 means the modulator is faulty. if theres another code present, theres another fault elsewhere. you shouldnt need an authorised honda guy either, i didnt, they just replace the unit, bleed the system and ut should work.

can i suggest you join the typeaccord forum, more advice there and i only happened upon your post again really, theres no means of getting an alert for replies but i'll try and check back
