Replacing both rear brakes pipes sections from the fuel tank back to the rear wheels.

You'll need more than just the pipes. Bound to be a few bits and pieces, not to mention fresh fluid.

TBH, for what they are charging you I don't think it's even worth getting the jack out.

We have been having on going intermittant issues with our air conditioning. Sometimes it works fine and blows out cold air when turned down low. Often though it will be blowing ice cold air on two of the vents on one side of the car and warmer air through the other two vents. the sides do sometimes swap around as well. when the temp is turned up it will blow hot air one side and cooler air on the other. the actual pressure of the air is less on the side that is not working properly as well.

Our local ford dealer has had the car in many times during the last two years ( the issue occured whilst still under warranty) and have replaced pretty much the entire air con system, compressor, vents, control panel etc. They now seem stumped as to what could be causing it. As the air con does work at certain times we think the actual system must be ok as it will blow out air around 6 degrees C. Does anyone have any ideas of what would cause this fault?... Read more

Yes,very common failure on the old v6 omega models, and a pit of a pig to change. On the vectra,I think you will find it at the front of the engine, near the oil filter.hth

I own a 307 1.4 16v petrol, on a 54 plate and am currently having problems, when driving the car will work for a few short trips then will start to play up. It loses power, and feels as though its going to stall, it has had the coil pack changed, two fuel injectors changed, two exhaust valves changed, spark plugs changed, injector harness changed and we are getting nowhere the fault is still there! The display will come up with anti pollution fault and catalytic converter fault, guzzles fuel and the engine management light flashes. It has been to peugeot for a diagnostic test and they came up with the fact that there was a fault on cylinder 2 which has been changed however this did not correct the problem. We are now running out of options and have spent over £700 in the last 3 months and just want the car sorted now! Can anyone offer any advice please?

Thanks in advance

There is a saying amongst electricians:
"if you haven't found the fault, then you haven't done enough testing!"

Diagnosis by guesswork and parts substitution is rarely effective and often expensive because the wrong parts are usually being changed. As a Warranty Engineer with a Midlands manufacturer I used to see a lot of that from dealers. This strikes me as a classic case. The dealers incompetence is costing you dear.

Hello,

I get an intermittent fault about 3 times a year. This is the same fault I have put on the forum before where the car suddenly runs very slowly or stalls. A good run on the motorway always fixes the problem. I am considering putting a bottle of Wynns fuel injector cleaner for petrol engines into the fuel tank. Some of my friends say not to touch any fuel cleaners with a bargepole, that it will cause damage to my engine. Others say it will help with my problem. Vauxhall say they recommend it but I am still wary. I have seen a customer review of the Wynns treatment which says the retail version is nowhere near as strong or as effective as the one used in Wynns service centres. I have tried to find out where the nearest one of these is to me but the website isnt complete so no joy there. What do forum readers think?... Read more

Fuel system cleaners are fine for your engine, some work and some don't

Dear mechanics

I have a 1.2 vw polo 2004 with approximately 60, 000 miles on the clock. The car has been parked (not used) for about 8 months.... Read more

the engine warning light is on.

There will almost certainly be fault codes logged in the ECU. Get those read and this should provide a better clue as to the exact source of the problem. It may cost a few quid, but will probably work out cheaper than replacing various parts at random....

I have a problem when starting from cold with lots of blue smoke. It also runs roughly for a few minutes or until the blue smoke has gone. It then runs fine with little or no smoke. Starting from warm doesn't produce the smoke. I recently had a problem with black smoke and some blue smoke but added a fuel additive which solved the problem. I've been told that this cold starting smoke may be due to faulty valve seals. The mileage is around 96K.

Any help would be great.... Read more

Cyd is quite right. I cringe every time Mike Brewer on Wheeler Dealers starts a car from cold and immediately revs the nuts off the poor thing.

Hi, can anyone tell me if the problems that the old focus1.6 diesel and fiesta suffered ie. turbo failure and leaking injectors still apply to the new shape focus, or have ford sorted these out now. Do these new focus's have different engines. Sparky 100. Thanks. Read more

All Ford diesels still suffer from problems.

Just had a water pump replaced at indy garage and on the road the water temp and oil pressure warning lights both itermiitently flicker simultaneously which is obviously wrong.

Noticed also that when ignition is first turned on neither of these lights illuminate unlike the battery charge and autodiagnostic lights which illuminate when ignition turned on then go out when engine started.... Read more

Many thanks for the response. Just to finalise this topic....the fault was a loose electric spade terminal on the oil pressure switch which had occurred during the fitting of the new water pump amd timing belt kit. For the record...the 'coolant' and 'oil' lights both illuminate when the ignition is switched on then of course extinguish when the engine is started.

MX5 suitable for all year round? My wife is interested in a MX5 but her friend, who has one, says they are rubbish in snow and ice. The model we want has traction control, has this made the car more suitable for winter use as she has a 6 mile each way commute and we live on a hill? Thanks - Andrew Watson

Tags: buying Yes, but for winter there is no substitute for winter tyres on all four wheels. For some cars I'd recommend Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons, left on all year round. But an MX5 is better on grippy Yokahamas or Toyos in the summer and put on full cold weather tyres for the Winter such as Continental WinterContact TS 850s.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I agree with HJ's answer - there is a stupid myth that they are rubbish in snow and anyone who struggles isn't taking the time to adapt their driving to the conditions! I had no probs this past winter (considering the winter went on until late April that was a good job really) Read more

I have Uniroyal Rainsports on mine. I think I'll replace them with the same tyre when they're due. It behaved in snow and slush but since I don't live too far from Cumbria its worth learning to deal with 'weather'!

Yes it's an awesome car to drive - the soft top does have its downsides, not least the sods who lob glowing fag butts out of their cars that might set fire to my roof.
