Dear mechanics

I have a 1.2 vw polo 2004 with approximately 60, 000 miles on the clock. The car has been parked (not used) for about 8 months.... Read more

the engine warning light is on.

There will almost certainly be fault codes logged in the ECU. Get those read and this should provide a better clue as to the exact source of the problem. It may cost a few quid, but will probably work out cheaper than replacing various parts at random....

I have a problem when starting from cold with lots of blue smoke. It also runs roughly for a few minutes or until the blue smoke has gone. It then runs fine with little or no smoke. Starting from warm doesn't produce the smoke. I recently had a problem with black smoke and some blue smoke but added a fuel additive which solved the problem. I've been told that this cold starting smoke may be due to faulty valve seals. The mileage is around 96K.

Any help would be great.... Read more

Cyd is quite right. I cringe every time Mike Brewer on Wheeler Dealers starts a car from cold and immediately revs the nuts off the poor thing.

Hi, can anyone tell me if the problems that the old focus1.6 diesel and fiesta suffered ie. turbo failure and leaking injectors still apply to the new shape focus, or have ford sorted these out now. Do these new focus's have different engines. Sparky 100. Thanks. Read more

All Ford diesels still suffer from problems.

Check out the ford owner forums for a list....

Just had a water pump replaced at indy garage and on the road the water temp and oil pressure warning lights both itermiitently flicker simultaneously which is obviously wrong.

Noticed also that when ignition is first turned on neither of these lights illuminate unlike the battery charge and autodiagnostic lights which illuminate when ignition turned on then go out when engine started.... Read more

Many thanks for the response. Just to finalise this topic....the fault was a loose electric spade terminal on the oil pressure switch which had occurred during the fitting of the new water pump amd timing belt kit. For the record...the 'coolant' and 'oil' lights both illuminate when the ignition is switched on then of course extinguish when the engine is started.

MX5 suitable for all year round? My wife is interested in a MX5 but her friend, who has one, says they are rubbish in snow and ice. The model we want has traction control, has this made the car more suitable for winter use as she has a 6 mile each way commute and we live on a hill? Thanks - Andrew Watson

Tags: buying Yes, but for winter there is no substitute for winter tyres on all four wheels. For some cars I'd recommend Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons, left on all year round. But an MX5 is better on grippy Yokahamas or Toyos in the summer and put on full cold weather tyres for the Winter such as Continental WinterContact TS 850s.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I agree with HJ's answer - there is a stupid myth that they are rubbish in snow and anyone who struggles isn't taking the time to adapt their driving to the conditions! I had no probs this past winter (considering the winter went on until late April that was a good job really) Read more

I have Uniroyal Rainsports on mine. I think I'll replace them with the same tyre when they're due. It behaved in snow and slush but since I don't live too far from Cumbria its worth learning to deal with 'weather'!

Yes it's an awesome car to drive - the soft top does have its downsides, not least the sods who lob glowing fag butts out of their cars that might set fire to my roof.

I 've read in the past, about different types of anti-freeze coolants..and how we must be careful which we use, depending on the types of metal and stuff the coolant is in contact with?

I'm referring to older technology engines, rather than 'modern' one's [where the maker simply tells us what to use?]....and I read that Rolls Royce [the real RR, not the current shadow?] used to recommend the use of Fernox [as used in central heating systems,??] in the cooling system?... Read more

Yes, that too.

Your next Mot will show the recorded milages from the previous MoTs.

I doubt there will be a problem. One of my present cars failed MoT a few years ago at 66K miles and then passed a retest at 55K miles. Just a clerical error at the garage, apparently recorded without comment by the system.

HI i bought a mondeo 2 weeks ago and first off when drove in the rain i could hear the road noise (rain on road) from the passenger side of the car, so i noticed the passenger doors was slightly out of line, got that sorted, today i pulled the carpet up on that side a bit to have a nose, no idea what i am looking for but thought id look ;) as soon as i pulled carpet up a plug come up too so not sure if that was maybe loose or off before i pulled carpet up i am not sure, i also felt that sponge like material near front of footwell and that was wet, so i dont know where to start to find out what is happening, not sure if it would be from that drain hole in the floor, ps what the hell is that, i hope its meant to have a hole in the floor :P or whether from the front end of the car, i noticed the cowl bit if that is what it is called wasnt sealed to the windscreen on the passenger side but garage said that wont cause no problems the driver side is attached to windscreen but passenger isnt, can anyone help at all Read more

I tow a caravan and found the auxilary plug and socket had melted, so I replaced them. There does not appear to be any power to the socket so I think a fuse will have blown. Can anyone tell me ? is there an inline fuse - if so where or is it fused from the fuse boards in the car - inside the engine compt or in the glove box. If so what number of fuse should I check.
