Volkswagen Polo - VW polo 2004 engine jerking and warning light on - Harry22

Dear mechanics

I have a 1.2 vw polo 2004 with approximately 60, 000 miles on the clock. The car has been parked (not used) for about 8 months.

The car needs to be utilised now, however, when I start the engine and with the car parked in neutral the engine consistently jerks and the engine warning light is on. When driving the car there is continued engine jerking and power loss. The car is very difficult to drive. I have changed the spark plugs, however, the problem has not been resolved.

Any adivice as to what the problem may be?

Thank you.

Did you start the car periodically over the last 8 months ?

Could the fuel have gone off ? .

I recenty had to strip down my motorcycle carburettors after 6 months none use. The needle valves had gummed up with solidifying fuel and were jammed open.

I have topped up the fuel with fresh fuel and have noticed the car is jerking less on idle. However, the engine light is still on and it is still very rough on idle. I have also noticed spurting from the exaust.

can anyone advise?

Thank you

You probably have had a coil fail on a cylinder. Don;t run long like this due to unburnt fuel damaging the catalyst.

the engine warning light is on.

There will almost certainly be fault codes logged in the ECU. Get those read and this should provide a better clue as to the exact source of the problem. It may cost a few quid, but will probably work out cheaper than replacing various parts at random.

If you're determined to DIY on a modern car, something to read and clear the fault codes via the car's OBD port is a "must have" device.
