It's been asked a million times, but DSG really can't be that problematic can it? I want to be proven wrong and all comments are welcome. One 'problem' I'm reading everywhere is the delay when pulling away, stop/starting. I'm not putting dsg owners down but isn't this made clear by VW? It's to do with the brake lights being linked to the dsg in some way for selecting gears? Also, is there some sense in reverse and second gear being on the same shaft and when coming to a stop if the car is not brought to stationary stop rather than coast the dsg is confused I.e will the driver slow down or will he/she want to reverse???
As for the mechatronic unit, well, the car must be purchased with a decent warranty that covers this. Therefore only vw will cover this based on my experience with flappy paddle semi autos. Read more

Well people finally got round to driving a dsg myself, in a skoda fabia VRS estate. It was different class. Yes it was a '13 plate with 4000 miles on but the dsg was amazing. I didn't even realise I'd got it up to 5th, not even the slightest blip or vibration.
Now I want to comment on the lag/delay at junctions. It did it TWICE on my test drive (approx. 3 miles). I have to say it wasn't even for half a second both times. If this is the norm I will live with that. There was the prefect amount of creep in 1st and parking it was so easy.
Someone who said he wouldn't get DSG has been easily converted!!!

PD140SA

Hi guys, I am new to the forum and hope to learn as well as contribute. I own a 2007 Passat 2.0TDI manual (the PD140 version). At the moment my car is a non-runner and I am really desperate to understand why. Here is a brief history of recent events (apologies in advance for the lengthy post). About 6 weeks ago I had the unfortunate event where my cylinder head cracked between the exhaust port and water jacket. Fortunately the bottom end did not overheat and was undamaged, but the repair was very expensive and took a while to get fixed. Once fixed the car ran beautifully without any problems. Two weeks ago I noticed the engine check light (yellow light that looks like an engine) coming on and staying on. So I took the car back and the scan showed a glow plug error. Due to logistical reasons I had to continue driving it for two weeks, but without any problems (no starting difficulty, running smooth, etc). This past Friday I took it back to the workshop to have the oil drained after the head replacement. When I collected the car in the afternoon, it started fine and no warning lights lit up. However, 5km’s down the road the car suddenly lost power (like when you lift of the throttle pedal) and the little engine light came on again. I lightly touched the pedal again and then had a “Electrical Fault Workshop!” on the display after which the glow plug light flashed and the engine died. After this it would not start at all. The car is back at the same workshop for the past week and they have scanned it with three different scan tools and cannot find an error code. They checked every single connector, sensor and fuses, and all are working. They confirmed that all glow plugs are lighting up, the injectors are receiving a pulse signal and the lambda sensor reads. They also checked the lift pump in the tank and it is pumping, and the injectors are receiving diesel. They bled the fuel system to ensure no air is trapped somewhere. I am really desperate and they don’t seem to find the fault. Has anyone experienced anything similar and does anyone have any suggestions where to continue looking for the fault. The last switch to check is the brake light switch and this will be done today. I will be taking the spare key to them this afternoon in desperation (maybe the current key “lost” its coding?). Sorry for the long post, but I am desperate for any help. Thanks, Read more

I suggest you post this on the VWAudiforums.co.uk Does it sound normal when cranking and has someone checked the cam belt. Do not keep cranking the engine as you may be injecting fuel and can hydraulically lock the engine and bend a con rod. Regards Peter

I bought a Ford Focus 2012 1.6 diesel Eco Boost in February this year. The car is at present 9 months old. Currently I am experiencing a clunking sound when changing gears whilst the car is in motion.

When I took it to the dealer it would make that clunking noise when using first and second gear. I was told that the noise was part of the workings of the gearbox and that all these models did that. Unfortunately I do not share the same thoughts. I called the Ford Technical Centre (£1 per minute) and there Technical office stated “If you experience a noise within the gearbox whilst the car is in motion, then it is a fault”.... Read more

I do not know how Ford can say "..... that petrol versions do not exhibit the same clucking noise."

I reported my Ford Focus derived B-Max, petrol 1.6 litre, last April, a month after buying the Factory Reconditioned 2012 model with 9k on the clock. The engineers could not find anything wrong. I put up with the judder for another 5k until it got so bad it almost stalled in heavy slow moving traffic on a slight rise over a railway bridge. I thought it was impossible to stall an automatic....

about 6 weeks ago we replaced the crankshaft pulley, yesterday i drove down the road and heard a clunk and the battery light came on, got the car home again, the crankshaft pulley bolt and belt had come off and were sitting on the underside engine cover thing, put it all back together again and started the engine but noticed the bolt was undoing itself again, so took it apart again, checked everything, all seemed fine, put back on tried to start the engine again and now it won't start, the crankshaft pulley is turning and the bolt does not appear to be undoing (hard to tell with the engine not actually starting) but cannot get it to start now.. my partner has done all work and is flummoxed, any help would be much appreciated, many thanks in advance Read more

If I am correct, the crank sensor(rpm/engine speed sensor),picks up a signal from a magnetic strip attached to the back of the crank pulley. This may have been damaged when it become detached.Best to use a new bolt when replacing pulley. If the engine control system can be checked on the diagnostics, then you may find a code for no rpm signal.hth

Hi, New to this site so please forgive any mistakes. my question is that i have just recieved a parking fine from smart parking ltd which operates a camera system from local Asda store .I had gone over time limit allowed even though im registered disabled and displayed my blue badge and timer on dash and parked in disabled bay. I had not been out for over six weeks so had to do shopping being disabled means it takes me much longer than most as i have to rest every 10/15 minutes as i become dizzy weak and disorianted if i don't rest which leads to passing out or vomiting . I do have receipts from asda just prior to ticket time store was very busy not many tills open which added extra minutes on as well as my slowness with walking and movement. I rang Asda to enquire about parking time limits for disabled and non disabled and i am astounded to find they are equal one and a half hours which i think is unfair how do they expect a person who is disabled to compete with non disabled in shopping times? I do accept that i was late on return to my car but i am upset that fine is excessive £40 for an extra 26 minutes in parking which goes up to £70 if not paid within 28 days . Please advise as i really do not wish to be penalised because i am disabled as i am sure most of us are late occasionaly if fine was reasonable id pay but i think it's outrageous . Thanks in advance, jo Read more

I agree with the poster above, I'd just ignore it.

And if the worse came to the worse and Asda took you to a civil court and won, which they wouldn't, you wouldn't need the imagination of Shakespear to extract revenge....

Were those the Camrys with double rear wipers??

An answer to the origninal question: My family had a couple of Volvo 240 estates over the years. My parents bought them second-hand as 5 seaters but Volvo would install the 7-seat kit, which folded into the existing underfloor compartment. This retro-fit option was one advantage over cars like the Renault Savanna/ Citroen CX/ Pug 504/5 where you had to search out an existing 7 seat model. I'm afraid I was too young to realise the implications on insurance etc! I'm not sure if Volvo still do it, probably not....

Don't know about Ford in particular but most systems do not operate if you keep your foot on the clutch or don't put the handbrake on.

Hi,

I just bought a C5 2.2 VTX plus HDi 173 Auto with Sat Nav (57 plate) yesterday. The owners manual was not provided with the sale as they did not have it. The vehicle drives good. There are some small problems like i could feel the Air con was not exactly working well which i possibly can figure out and is not heart stopping. Purchased and drove 90 miles to my place and almost reaching home, i saw the Anti Pollution system faulty sign come up and the engine light switched on on the dash board. ... Read more

The problem is more likely is the car being low on Eloy fluid if you have only just bought it from a dealer take it back and ask them to repair it.
