Am looking for a decent 2.0 ltr HDi machine that will eat up the motorways and be ok on the shorter runs ..... aren't we all ....... and am unsure of where to direct my search. Having just returned to the UK from the east I've really lost track of what's good and what's not so good here as I've been blinded by tacky Asian throwaway vehicles for a few years!
Some spec requirements would be manual, 4 door or 5 door hatchback car, PAS, a/c and not too many fiddly buttons everywhere (as the 2008 C5 i.e.) ..... my wife has to drive this too! Would also prefer a private rather than dealer deal ... or am I being too sensitive?Last UK car was a Jag X-type but we're over that now!... Read more
Would buying a Kia Cee'd 2 diesel off Broker A who is selling it trade registered for £688 less than Broker B who is offering the same car but as a 1st registered keeper, negatively affect its resale value? I plan to keep the car for five years. Read more
Thanks for the replies. That £688 will buy me a 5 year servicing package WITH change. Happy dayz. Broker (major online company) does fill me with confidence. User feedback is very positive.
I bought a Mazda mx5 about 5 weeks ago. It was advertised as having aircon which I found didn't work. Then shortly afterwards I noticed a slow oil leak so I rang the garage who advised me to take it to their garage. They looked at it and said it might be the head gasket (although not around the cylinders)
They cleaned and fiddled about and basically told me to keep an eye on it for a week or two to see if it continued. It has continued and I have now found a fairly scary piece of rust on one of the chassis rails, which is in fact a split. This seems to be a fairly common fault on these cars but I now think I should just return the car and ask for my money back.
Is that possible? I don't think I want to faff about trying to get the car fixed, and its been a few weeks so how do I stand legally? Read more
Thanks for the advice - I'm going to get another 'proper' MOT done to verify before I go ahead with rejecting it.
I thought these Arthur Daley types had died out!

ESP systems use a number of sensors to detect the state of the car. Many of these sensors are dual or even triple purpose. For example the ESP system will sense each wheels speed using the ABS sensors on each wheel, and the speedo may well use the signal to display speed (so you see, triple use of sensors, add traction control for a fourth).
The ESP will have wheel speed sensing (probably using ABS sensors), steering angle sensing (with a sensor on the steering column usually) and yaw sensing using an accelerometer (which you are refering to as an esp sensor). It may also have vehicle attitude sensing from height sensors on the suspension on either one pair or all four wheels (my Saab uses the latter I believe)....
Hi,
My engine started to make a grinding noise last night, then oil light came on then it conked out. Was on the M62 so had to call the AA. I wasn't driving long, it all happened within seconds of the noise. The man came and said rod or rods have broken in engine and made a hole in the oil sump. He may as well have been speaking in Chinese as i'm not mechanically minded at all, but car doesnt start and i had to be towed home, so i wanted to ask you good folk here - ...... Read more
I'd probably get someone to supply and fit a known good second hand engine. It certainly wouldn't justify fitting a brand new one to a 7 year old car; it would cost thousands.
You need to ask around locally....
Hi,
today i bought a 2002 2.6 v6 cdx Vectra. However on the way home i felt quite warm so i turned on the Climate control and pressed the - button until it read LO on the screen. However when i felt no cooler i placed my hand over the vent and discovered it was still pushing out very warm/hot air. I turned off the fan which i could hear had stopped but the heat still seemed to trickle through the vent and the car failed to cool down inside unless i opened the window. What could be causing this.... Read more
I would guess this is a vectra B model. In which case it is possible that the link rod from the electric servo control motor has become detached from the hot/cold adjustment flap. Also, the a/con may not be working;needs to be checked. The radio in safe mode needs a 4 digit code to re-instate operation.hth
Hello,
As the MW reception gets worse, I want to get a digital radio for my car. The Renault dealiership said they cannot do it and I do not have an MP3 socket. Any suggestions ?... Read more
"Seems a reasonable swap!"
FB, that was the same answer that someone - I strongly suspect you - posted some years ago when I started a thread with the title 'New car for my wife'....

Bit of a long shot as this is quite an old thread.
But I have exactly the same problem on a 2004 nissan Tino.
Only button that seems to have power to it is heated rear window.
Have tried new units and still the same.
Do you have any more info on where the wiring issue was at all?
And how it was found? Thanks
I had a ongoing problem with car in that it kept cutting out even whilst dring. It spent days at main dealers who were unable to diagnose problem without just trying new parts to se if that solved it. Took it to a lovely independent mechanic who was also baffled after hours of testing and then discoved a trapped wire under hand brake that was causing electrics to earth against metal in hand brake. A nice change to have a solution! - thanks for that.
Probably of more interest on the Technical side so I'll move it there.
Right then - am off in search of an Avensis or even a Qashqai which 'the Commander in Chief' has favoured by throwing a passing glance in its general direction.. ...
