According to the Met Police there are about 950 carjackings every year in London. All the news stories I have read always feature Mercedes and BMWs.

I have Thai friends who are buying a property in London and will be looking at purchasing a car to use when they are in the UK. ... Read more

Not sure about other makes and models but I drive a Clio 05 plate which has an anti carjacking device. At 4mph, the doors automatically lock. They cannot be opened from the outside, but they can be opened from the inside in case of emergencies.

This proved to be a life saver when I was the victim of an attempted carjacking in Islington a couple of years ago.

I was hit from behind, so I pulled over as expected. Upon doing this, 4 youths exited the car which had hit me and attempted to carjack me. They couldn't get in, which infuriated them and made them violent - kicking and pelting the car. However it did give me enough time to get my head together and floor it.

Anti carjacking devices are now something I will look for in a car as standard.

Saying that, I wish your friends a pleasant stay and I'm sure they will be safe.

Greetings.

I've recently changed the valve cover gasket on this car which had cracked and found the spark plugs on 3 and 4 swimming. I know about the problem regarding the washers leaking onto the valve cover, but after fully drying the head, plugs and leads, this car ran like a sewing machine for 5 or so minutes then started to misfire. I removed No.3 lead and found water in this side again. It does look as though the core plug is leaking. Are these normal press fit core plugs or are they threaded?... Read more

Over the weekend, I had the unusual- for me-experience of being a passenger for 6 hours or so.

Looking at other vehicles on the motorways,I saw the usual selection of indexplates with non-standard spacing, scripts, badges, playing around which screwheads, etc..in passing, I noticed what might even been a type of "law"- that is, if you have a prominent GB or St Gorge's cross on your plate, presumably to announce your patriotism, it is almeost always attached to a car which could not possibly have been manufactured in the UK...... Several years ago I fitted a new pair of tyres to the front of this vehicle...the back pair were almost new at the time. The NSF is now almost down to 1.6mm and must be renewed. For some reason the OSF still has a good 3mm of tread. My preference is to get some more mileage out of the OSF tyre. Is there any reason why I should not do this even though it would mean that for a while I shall have 5mm on one tyre and 3mm on the other? Read more

I recently had the clutch and slave cylinder (and transmission fluid and speed sensor) replaced in my 2001 Focus 1.8 Zetec. It's done 175k.

After picking it up, I drove it for about 100 miles, then stopped for a couple of hours. When I started again, I had trouble getting the gear stick far enough across to get the car into first or second - there was resistance, like maybe one of the cables had snagged. I pushed a bit harder a couple of times and eventually it was fine.... Read more
