1998 Polo 1.6, air conditioner, immobiliser, 200k km (120 miles). Periodically the instrument panel shows randomly varying information, the odometer shows hieroglyphics or the panel may be blank, no speed, revs, fuel, warning light, nothing. I have seen 3 suggested sources of problem mentioned in blogs.
1) alternator producing up to 18v, assess by turning on electrics, (this has made no difference), neutralise by disconnecting the battery and shorting across the disconnected cables. Solve by replacing the alternator.... Read more

If they can't provide any parking, then aren't they building new homes in the wrong place? Or too many!
Bought this car Feb 2013. Has full checkable service history. Never missed a service since new.
Had yearly service done in March 13 where mechanic noted that timing belt hadn't been replaced since 09 service which was 21,000 miles ago. He felt "it would be ok for a while".so it wasn't changed.... Read more

My sons Motorhome was badly damaged when the car that was parked next to it caught fire by what we believed was a fault. It was a company car which was being used by a neighbour. My son was given details of the cars insurers[Zurich]and the motorhome was taken to a garage to be assessed for repairs.A hire motorhome was sent out to them, all fine so far. Then came the biggest shock of all!He was told the parts including the side panel which was scortched and buckled with the heat from the fire was no longer available, and the insurers were not accepting third party damages to make a settlement payment to my son.My son had only owned the motorhome for 6 days which was heartbreaking enough and his wife and himself are under really bad stress over the way the insurers are dealing with them. After just finishing a active tour with HM Forces in Afghanistan he should have come home to enjoy the dream motorhome and Zurich have caused him so much stress. How can they be allowed to do this to honest hardworking people. Can anyone offer advice on this matter we need some helpful info PLEASE! Bear in mind that the Ombudsman will not normally accept a complaint from a third party, it generally has to be from a customer about their own Insurer.
They do however make exceptions on very rare occassions so it worth speaking to them....
Hullo all, wondering if anyone could help with this:
I'm trying to source a unit for producing a pleasant gong or chime sound. As you will know, many cars have these for door-open and seatbelt reminders etc. I'm guessing these things are like relays that fit in the fusebox?... Read more

I bought a 2008 325i convertible from a dealer in South London in August 2011. I have recently tried to sell the car and actually got as far as agreeing a deal only for that party to get an hpi check which showed a mileage discrepancy.
In May 2011 the car was taken to a BMW dealership with 48k on the clock, just 3 weeks later it was taken to the same dealer for warranty work but with 39k on the clock! The dealership refused to do the work under warranty as the mileage was incorrect. ... Read more

I've just had to replace 2 run-flat tyres (not cheap) to get my car through its MOT. They were both worn abnormally on the inner wall and were the front offside and rear offside, the front being most worn.
I've been told various likely causes - tracking, tyre pressure and alignment being some. The guy fitting the tyre said if it had been rubbing on anything, that would have been visible in the wheel arch and could see nothing. Has anyone had similar issues that may help shed some light? I'd be very grateful for any suggestions. Thank you. Read more
Just to be clear:
you replaced two unevenly worn tyres without having any checks carried out to identify the cause?...
My daughter had an accident the other day in her car a 2010 Vauxhall Corsa. The door is badly damaged and the car just appears to need a new door, the door hinges and A frame are ok.
The car was collected today by the insurance company and taken to the repair shop, where they are stating that the car may be a write off.... Read more
Having spent many years working with vehicle crashworthness based in Body Engineering of a well known Midlands OEM, I would caution you that there may be significant damage to the A pillar that you may not be able to see. The A pillar is an integral part of the "safety cage" and damage here may not be repairable. I'm not familiar with the structure of Corsas. Just saying be careful and don't jump to conclusions just based on what you can "see".
