I'm hoping that someone can help me because my wife is pretty furious with me right now.
I changed a broken rear light (just the lens, not the electrics) on her MK1 clio this morning and it looks like I've managed to do some damage in the process.... Read more
I have just bought a twin pack of Barracuda (now being renamed Roofrush) carriers. I cannot fathom how the rear mounting plate should be fitted. I can only get it to the start poit of fitting (as shown in the diagrammatic instructions - see) but that means the two plastic lugs stick up in the hole in the middle of the load plate - hence it will not slide backwards. Most diagrams in the instructions and many photos on web (eg www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/accessories/car-ra3) show it further back so I'm still missing something.
I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give. Read more
Hi there - Sorry I can't advise you but if the racks you have don't work for you and you're able to exchange them at the retailer you bought them from, I can strongly recommend these -

I think their labour rates were about two thirds those of the main dealers but that doesn't mean much. I never felt they were overcharging me or finding work that wasn't there. They recycled a DPF for me when they could have charged for a new one albeit at much less than a main dealer. Ring them and see how they deal with your enquiry, if they sound expensive move on!
I have owned the above vehicle from new and todate it has covered 56000 miles, recently the power steering has tended to be stiffer and feels lumpy at times than in the past particularly at low revs and also on full lock. I am told by a garage mechanic who has experience of Vectra C's that this is likely to be caused by low power steering fluid in the reservoir which will reqire topping up. Looking in the Haynes manual it says the fluid is Vauxhall Opel fluid 93 160 548 and I have been told that this is only available from dealers if they do the complete repair. Can anyone advise if general PS fluid available from Spares suppliers will mix with the original or does it have to be from a main dealer.
Many thanks... Read more
I have a 3 year 3 month old clio sport with 38k on the clock. The gearbox struggles to go into 4th gear and the garage inform me that I need a new gearbox as the synchro is broken. I expected the gearbox to last longer than this and have told that to Renault UK. They have told me that as a goodwill gesture they will pay £486 inc VAT to have the gearbox removed and inspected but as it is defective they will be unable to refit it. If as I expect there is a defect with the gearbox then as another goodwill gesture they will pay 50% of the £2806 cost of replacing the gearbox with a reconditioned one. Is there anything else that I can do? I know that i'm out of warranty but surely I can expect a gearbox to last longer than that. The car is driven on the dual carriageway daily by my girlfriend and has a full dealer service history. There are quite a few incidents on the renaultsport website of the same happening. Do I have any standing with the trading standards line "last for the time you would expect and be free from any defects".
I agree - that seems a fair offer from Renault. Without wishing to defend a manufacturer, one has to bear in mind in fairness that a car - particularly a sporty one like this - may have been driven like a bat out of hell by a previous owner, causding premature wear.
The manufacturer has no way of knowing how a car has been driven - which is of course unfair on those people who have had the car fro new and driven it properly.

An obvious candidate would be blocked drains from the heater intake plenum. Water runs down the intake, cannot drain fast enough and ends up going through the heater into the footwells.
Could be crud in the drains themselves or just leaf matter in the plenum blocking them....
Can anyone tell me whether all new cars come with a spare tyre as a friend tells us that some don't and you have to pay extra if you want one...is this true?
If so, which makes of new cars do come with a spare tyre.... Read more
alastairq, well put!
I do have disposable gloves, torch, a sheet of thick polythene to kneel on and one of those disposable overalls the Pound shops stock. I spent many hours fixing old cars in my youth in the 1960s, got into the habit of being prepared One concession to Elf and Safety, a cheap hi-viz waistcoat too.
You say that the car is eletrically dead, totally. It's got to be the battery. Did you disconnect it before you started playing with the light wiring? Is it properly connected now. Disconnect it. Check there is power in it. Reconnect it securely with all the wires. There are two big fat leads to the positive terminal.
The engine fuse box is in the scuttle under the boot lid under a plastic flap that accesses the wiper washer reservoir....
