Hi all. I hope someone can help me. Could anyone tell me please how to/or if I can disable the alarm and immobiliser on my car as my fob wont do it. I can open the car door with the key but the alarm keeps going off (driving my neighbours mad) and it wont let me start the engine.

Ive been told by a toyota garage that my particular fob is discontinued. I find this really odd because I would have thought it would have been a simple case of copying it/transferring information to a more modern fob??? Please someone tell me that its not possible for a car manuafacturer to discontinue a fob?... Read more

No problems with clutc h in normal usage but in heavy, slow moving traffic it has a "creak" best described as a cross between a rusty hinge and a bed spring. The assembly has been greased up to the cylinder and there are no leaks from it. Read more

Flat battery so tried jump starting following handbook precisely. Green key symbol lit up which RAC later told me meant key scrambled as was in ignition. Honda don't mention this anywhere so can I get them to repair under "fit for purpose" or similar?
If I replace battery myself, how do I stop alarm going off? Read more

Hi. Wondered if anyone else has had experience of this. Bought low mileage Mazda 2 Sport, April 08 reg., from local branch of Bristol Street Motors, in August 2011. Nice car, no probs at all. Had it serviced last year by my local friendly garage. This year I was persuaded to try a 'fixed price' servicing deal at BS Motors. They told me that car had a 'faulty ABS Unit' and needed new one - total price £887 over and above the service!

They ended up keeping the car for nearly three weeks while they ordered in a new one, which also proved to be faulty, then another one, etc. etc. Paid up under protest in order to get the car back.... Read more

Expensive, did no one make enquiries with one of the very competent companies specialising in repairing ECUs and control modules to see if a testing and repair of the faulty unit was feasable.

I have a rover 25 2.0td and the other day I was driving along when all of a sudden I couldn't change down into another gear. I found that when the car was running, I couldn't put it into gear, yet if the ignition was off, I could change gear easily. Tried it again today, week after all this happened, and it changes ok even with the engine running alltho I didn't want to risk pulling off. Could I just be low on gearbox oil? Read more

With the car on level ground (once you get the acoustic pan off, three 10mm bolts at the front and two 8mm bolts behind the leading wheels) and the gearbox plug removed (usually a square socket drive) the oil level should be just at the lower edge of the plug on these models. The gearboxes are usually pretty reliable on these models, same with the gear linkage which you can check for wear and tear whilst you are under there. The symptoms sound very much like the clutch assembly is falling to bits and not allowing the clutch plate to rise on command. Is there also a tinkle tinkle sound with no load on the running engine, if so it sounds like the thrust bearings are at the end of their life, the sound should change as you push the clutch pedal in and out.

My sister needs a largish estate car to replace her ageing Galaxy. Youngest daughter will be 17 in the summer and will need to drive. Additionally the vehicle needs to be able to transport 2 large dogs. Ideally diesel new and bought on PCP at £175-£225 per month with the old Galaxy (£1500?) as deposit. All thoughts appreciated. The Yeti looks like a good idea, and has comemout very well in the latest JD Power suirvey. Just make sure that it isn't too high for the dogs to get in and out.

I took my car in for MOT last Thursday, 23rd May. Not a lot wrong, it only failed on the handbrake. So they said they'd replace the cable. The next day, when I went back, the car bonnet was open and they were "working on it". I asked why, and was told they had replaced the handbrake cable and taken it for a test drive around the block and the indicators "suddenly" stopped working. Er... suddenly? mmmmmm.....

I left it with them and went back the next day to be told they had changed the "flasher unit" (this was after being told it was probably the relay). I then drove the car away (Saturday morning) and didn't check anything else. However, I had to go out last night (Sunday) and as it was just getting dark I switched on the side lights. I kind of noticed the dashboard wasn't illuminated but didn't think too much of it as it was only just getting slightly dark. I didn't think much about it until I had to drive back home. I turned on the headlights and there wasn't a single light on the dashboard. Not even the hazard switch was lit as it normally is. Luckily I wasn't far from home but I had to drive back with absolutely no way of seeing anything on the dash - or knowing what my speed was.... Read more

I turned on the headlights and there wasn't a single light on the dashboard.

Before reading the riot act at them, it may be worth just checking that they haven't accidently turned the dash lamp dimmer all the way down while they were working on it.

Morning All. I have lurked in the background on this forum for a few years now, reading various posts with interest. This is my first post, so I am hoping somebody can give me some helpful advice on a situation I have got myself into.

I hired a car in Spain last week and when returning it to the airport, the tank had to be full. As I drove around the outskirts of the airport, pretty much every garage I could find was closed (it was in the middle of the Spanish Siesta period). Eventually I found a garage on an industrial area that had card payment so it could be used 24 hours. There were 3 pumps at this garage, one marked 'Diesel', one 'Gasoleo' and the other 'LPG'. Knowing that the hire car ran on unleaded, I stupidly assumed that if one pump said diesel and one LPG, then the Gasoleo pump must be unleaded. The pump nozzle fitted into the tank okay (I thought diesel nozzles were larger?) so I went ahead and filled the tank up with no further thought.... Read more
