I have a rover 25 2.0td and the other day I was driving along when all of a sudden I couldn't change down into another gear. I found that when the car was running, I couldn't put it into gear, yet if the ignition was off, I could change gear easily. Tried it again today, week after all this happened, and it changes ok even with the engine running alltho I didn't want to risk pulling off. Could I just be low on gearbox oil? Read more
I have an 52 reg Ford Fiesta LX and have recently had the car in for repairs. As the battery has been disconnected I now need a code to reset the radio. My serial number is M006690.
Can anybody help me?... Read more
It worked instantly. Thank you very much!
My sister needs a largish estate car to replace her ageing Galaxy. Youngest daughter will be 17 in the summer and will need to drive. Additionally the vehicle needs to be able to transport 2 large dogs. Ideally diesel new and bought on PCP at £175-£225 per month with the old Galaxy (£1500?) as deposit. All thoughts appreciated. The Yeti looks like a good idea, and has comemout very well in the latest JD Power suirvey. Just make sure that it isn't too high for the dogs to get in and out.
I took my car in for MOT last Thursday, 23rd May. Not a lot wrong, it only failed on the handbrake. So they said they'd replace the cable. The next day, when I went back, the car bonnet was open and they were "working on it". I asked why, and was told they had replaced the handbrake cable and taken it for a test drive around the block and the indicators "suddenly" stopped working. Er... suddenly? mmmmmm.....
I left it with them and went back the next day to be told they had changed the "flasher unit" (this was after being told it was probably the relay). I then drove the car away (Saturday morning) and didn't check anything else. However, I had to go out last night (Sunday) and as it was just getting dark I switched on the side lights. I kind of noticed the dashboard wasn't illuminated but didn't think too much of it as it was only just getting slightly dark. I didn't think much about it until I had to drive back home. I turned on the headlights and there wasn't a single light on the dashboard. Not even the hazard switch was lit as it normally is. Luckily I wasn't far from home but I had to drive back with absolutely no way of seeing anything on the dash - or knowing what my speed was.... Read more

Before reading the riot act at them, it may be worth just checking that they haven't accidently turned the dash lamp dimmer all the way down while they were working on it.
Morning All. I have lurked in the background on this forum for a few years now, reading various posts with interest. This is my first post, so I am hoping somebody can give me some helpful advice on a situation I have got myself into.
I hired a car in Spain last week and when returning it to the airport, the tank had to be full. As I drove around the outskirts of the airport, pretty much every garage I could find was closed (it was in the middle of the Spanish Siesta period). Eventually I found a garage on an industrial area that had card payment so it could be used 24 hours. There were 3 pumps at this garage, one marked 'Diesel', one 'Gasoleo' and the other 'LPG'. Knowing that the hire car ran on unleaded, I stupidly assumed that if one pump said diesel and one LPG, then the Gasoleo pump must be unleaded. The pump nozzle fitted into the tank okay (I thought diesel nozzles were larger?) so I went ahead and filled the tank up with no further thought.... Read more
Contaminated witrh what?
The car I have appears to be a TDCI, even the engine plastic sound proofing has TDCI written on it. There is no TDCI badge on the boot/hatch door. V5 does not list it as a TDCI...Some paperwork from previous garage Service Reports list it as TDCI
The info info I have got from Ford ETIS lists the engine as a Duratorq DI-HPCR (115PS) Lynx .... Read more

Hi All,
I recently bought a brand new 2013 2.2 i-DTEC Civic. While I am generally happy with the car, I have one major gripe: when the fuel tank is over 2/3s full, I can hear the fuel slosing around in the tank!... Read more
I dont recall any car Ive had, before the Civic, where you cannot hear the fuel moving about the tank above half full, the Rover 25 being the worst for that IMO

Hi all,
As you've all been so helpful with automobile matters in the past, I'm back for some more nuggets of wisdom.
So here's the thing. My 2004 VW Bora is starting to chug a little, we've also just come into a little bit of money (11k) so I'm on the lookout for a new family car for myself, wife and 5 year old monster.
I have been offered a 2010 Toyota Prius. It's the Spirit model, so comes with built in Sat Nav, rear camera and quite a few other bells and whistles. It's a family member who is offering it to us, he's had it from new, is a careful driver, has full franchise service history and 35k miles on the clock. It's in immaculate condition and he's offering it for the price the dealer offered him part ex (£10,700). Equivalent Prius' are going privately for between 13 and 14k.
Now I wouldn't usually be looking in that sort of bracket, but obviously it's a very good offer. I could buy something else for say, 8k, which was slightly newer with less mileage, but nothing in the same league. The Prius us tax free, and I would hope to make other savings considering its high mpg and cheap servicing.
So considering the above, what would you do?

I am in my second Prius because it does just what I require. The seating does need checking on a long drive, although I find it very comfortable. 400 miles in a day, with the return next day without any back ache. [ We do have sheepskins on the seats though.]
They can be a bit of a gas-guzzler if used exclusively around town. I run about 50 / 50 city and main road / motorway. Sitting on cruise control at legal limit [ 100 km/hr ] on main roads, and not being a hoon about town, I can get very close to the claimed 4.4 litres / 100 km. ...
Apparently 70% of their sales do not involve a test drive. The customer simply places the order and waits for the car. Read more
" The wife's 123d BMW diesel convertible with 204bhp isn't fun. Swift, yes, but fun? No. The hatch 123d might be better but it isn't a patch on the Mk6 to drive despite only being 6 bhp down."
AKR, do you think that's because it's a diesel, or would a petrol 1-series be no better? The only time I've driven a 1-series was when my wife's Mini was being serviced and the courtesy car was a 123d, (surprising up-market for a courtesy car). I rememer it being very fast in a straight kline but nothing special in the handling department. Could that be because of the heavy diesel lump up front?
With the car on level ground (once you get the acoustic pan off, three 10mm bolts at the front and two 8mm bolts behind the leading wheels) and the gearbox plug removed (usually a square socket drive) the oil level should be just at the lower edge of the plug on these models. The gearboxes are usually pretty reliable on these models, same with the gear linkage which you can check for wear and tear whilst you are under there. The symptoms sound very much like the clutch assembly is falling to bits and not allowing the clutch plate to rise on command. Is there also a tinkle tinkle sound with no load on the running engine, if so it sounds like the thrust bearings are at the end of their life, the sound should change as you push the clutch pedal in and out.
