Does the current model Berlingo Multispace have a DPF?
I think they started in 2008 and wondered if the early models might not have them as my mileage would not suit a car fitted wiith one but I still want a diesel so might have to look at the earlier model.... Read more
Hi all,
I tried posting about this for help on the 'official' Corsa D forum but that's proven to be useless to get any form of reply/help, so I'm trying here!
I bought a 2009/59 Corsa last July from a Ford franchised dealer, they had assured my the car had been serviced however I have since seen no record of this being done in the service book (my own fault for not chasing it up/checking the book sooner.) - therefore I haven't had to look under the bonnet at all since owning it. When I mention about what I find when I look under my bonnet, you'll see why I'm skeptical that the dealer I bought the car from actually did a service.
About halfway into my 12 mile motorway drive to work this morning, my car went into Limp mode - completely out of the blue, didn't expect it to happen. I'd just started to accellerate back to 60 from the end of the 50mph roadworks zone and I could feel it stuttering, then the EML light came on (flashing) but soon disapppeared and the Service indicator came on (which I've been expecting to see around this point so I'm fine with that, I'm aware it was nearly due.)
Anwyay, got off the motorway pulled up in a side road and turned off/on. Car struggled to fire and I had to keep the revs up to prevent stalling, still struggling to pull off and drive. This time the EML light was flashing constantly, no service light. Odd. I got to a junction, however, and as I pulled out the throttle response came back to life and there was no EML light. Confused face by now. Pulled into work and I turned off/on and everything was fine - checked during lunch break, still fine.
Driving home: Happened within 5 minutes of driving and went into Limp mode again, this time the EML was on static - no flashing or service light. Managed to get home, turned off/on and it's still on static, no service light. I checked my engine bay and I've been delightfully greeted with a snapped breather hose and a filthy engine bay (literally everything is covered in brown/black gunk - I also noticed the engine cover was wet with what I assume is oil, right near the area of the oil cap.) - I can only assume this is oil residue from a leak? Could this be part of the problem?
I've read from other sources the issue is either the MAF or Lambda sensor, but I'm not remotely a car-minded person so I'm really lost here... I'd be forever grateful with some help on this? :)
Thank you, sorry for the long post. Read more
A split breather hose will put the fuelling system out of control. The electronics will struggle to cope with any excess air entering the system.Get the system reset after repair and everthing should be ok.If it has lost a lot of oil,it may be a good idea to get the oil and filter changed,if you feel it has been overlooked previously.hth
Back in 2011 I was involved in an accident where my car suffered rear end damage from a car coming up too fast behind me. I reported the accident to my insurer (Hastings) and they talked me into pursuing my claim with Helphire (Albany) so that I wouldn't initially need to pay my excess out before getting any judgement (This is a world of pain and I would advise against anyone doing this). They advised me that I was involved in a 'No Fault Accident' and as such, in no way responsible for the crash and this would be taken up by Helphire. I had to sign a 'no fee' credit agreement to pay any costs that may arise out of the claim and to cover me, should any issues arise (I should have smelt a rat). I am covered by this agreement only If I tow the line and accept to follow their advice, otherwise I would be liable for all my costs.
This is a basic timeline of events... Read more
Hastings are brokers I would have thought it was better to go through the actual insurance company.
In the HJ column, the Telegraph On-Line today, there is the sad story of a member who's wife's car has got four buckled wheel rims. The damage was put down to sleeping policemen and potholes. A garage manager said that if they replaced the rims then it might happen again within a couple of hours.
Could the threat of such damage be reduced by slowing down for the road humps and steering around the potholes ? I've seen so many drivers go over them as though they were not there. Read more
Interesting. There's a road near me in a 30mph that's riddled with massive potholes, that I traverse at 15mph like a trial rider, while keeping a careful view in the mirror for t***s in BMWs bearing down on me.
Now, most females have been taught to do 30mph where the sign says 30mph, and drive in a straight line....
Any ideas?
Do the Dutch travel abroad to buy their cars? Read more
There is good and bad everywhere Collos, the Dutch wanted to get writ of the class system us and them. Some Brits done very well in Holland when I was a youngster a Brit was top of the river police in Rotterdam.Anyway I won't go on all the best in Dresden.
Why is it HJ advocates Cam Chains and loaths belt cam engines? It seems to be the focus of some of the reviews in the car by car?
The reason I ask is I've had issues with the chain on my Golf TSi 122, its on its 2nd chain in 50k, and I note that the BMW N47 has a habit of chain failure, amongst other cars too. Plus chain replacement appears to be vehemently expensive?... Read more

I cannot find any information as to whether you can still ride a 49cc scooter, tax class bicycle on a cycle path in extra urban areas with roads of 50/60/70mph limits. I only question this. As recently a cycle path was removed and replace with a bus and cycle route. I then recieved a ticket and was informed on appeal that the law changed in 2002 and only pedle cycle's and buses are allowed. cost me £30 :( and I know have to ride 2 miles further every time I want to go that way. Well not as I walk down path ;) Read more
ps the letters are big because I cut and pasted and counldnt see how I could make them smaller on this site.
Easiest way, which works for everything and saves having to work out how to "paste as text" in each application, is to paste into something like Notepad (which has no formatting). Then cut 'n paste the plaintext results from there across to where you want them, where they will then pick up the target application's default format as if manually typed.
HJ, I had a 2007 VW Passat 2.0 TDI that had a valve fail on the M1 at speed. Fortunately for me, this happened at around mid morning and there wasn't to much traffic around. The engine just cut out, and I was able to glide over to the hard shoulder. Had this have happened during a busier time the consequences could have been far worse.
The car had about 80,000 miles on the odometer when this fault occurred, and was out of warranty. It was taken to a VW main dealer where a valve and wiring loom were replaced in the engine.
As the car was leased, I have no idea of the cost of repair.Since this happened I have been made aware that this is or was a common problem for this engine.
Quite frightening really. I no longer have the vehicle. Read more
I'm driving a mercedes, never had safety issues with that :) Althought I didn't have any accident as well.

Cylinder head removed and gasket looks ok.
If you're caught it early it may well look ok, but be leaking when up to temperature / pressure, particularly as those engines are world famous for head gasket failure....
