Any ideas?

Do the Dutch travel abroad to buy their cars?

May have something to do with VAT at 19% being charged together with a luxury tax of around 30%. This applies whether they buy locally or import. As a result though, the manufacturers tend to keep the list price before tax low, making the Netherlands an attractive place for other nationalities to buy their cars, since they don't pay the tax.

Massive levels of tax on new cars and a super tax on oil-burners too.

Travelling abroad to buy does not help as you still have to pay the tax on import. You can easily end up worse off doing this, as the base price of the car in NL before tax is actually quite low. This last is the reason why, back in the day, it was cheaper to order your UK-spec, UK registered new Rover through a dealer in NL than it was to go up to Longbridge and collect it.

Hybrids and PHEVs have far lower tax than conventional cars (PHEVs are currently zero) and are like fleas on a dog in these parts, as you get a heck of a lot more car for your Euro if it has a large battery and an electric motor or two in it.

I think most privately imported cars to the UK used to come from Holland.

So if they increased the price there it is a sharp smack to their knuckcles. YOU WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN.

We tried to teach you 60 years ago in Rotterdam but you Dutch will not learn.

Can you order UK spec cars in Holland?

Do the import costs (ferry and paperwork) and inevitable VAT make the benefit of importing a car from Holland minimal?

Do you pay the VAT on import or registration?

Off topic,

How old does a car need to be to avoid paying VAT on import?

Back in the days when the motor industry referred to Britain as "Treasure Island", due to the vast price premiums they could get away with in Blighty, it was worth importing.

Favourite sources were NL and DK as both have swingeing tariffs on new cars and thus the base price was kept as low as possible by the manufacturers. Quite a few Dutch dealerships made a point of catering to UK trade, to the extent that they'd arrange all the paperwork and UK registration for you. Fly over, collect car, drive back.

Importing into NL: I think the cutoff for paying tax on import is around 7 years, I can ask fro the exact age if it's important to you. The tax reduces over time to reflect the vehicles depreciation, but it is always based on the price when new in NL, not where it came from. There's a fair trade in secondhand vehicles imported from DE and quite a few small traders specialise in doing this. While imports are a fair bit cheaper than "native" vehicles this percentage drop in price will also be seen on later resale, so there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Oddly, if you sell an older car here these days, it will quite likely be purchased by a small trader from Eastern Europe. My old Opel Zafira (new in DE, bought as an import in NL by me) has gone off to end its days in Georgia.....

Anbody who has been to Holland recently will see its probabley the richest country in Europe with an infrastructure second to none so if some things are a little bit more expensive what does that matter if the overall benifits leave you on the plus side.
