Hi everyone!
Long time lurker, first time poster.
I've been working in Germany for the last year, and during this time I have had a company BMW 1 series. In July I will return to England and I am looking to buy a car for between 2 - 3000 pounds (sorry no pound symbol on German keyboards)... Read more

I think you should check your engine oil level pronto. If that's fine, you might have a leaking oil seal in the turbo. If you catch it in time then the bill will be small. If you leave it and the engine runs away, you'll need a new engine. Don't be a hero and soldier on with it in its current state!
My volvo main dealer quotes £140 for a spare key and an extra £40 for a fob. This seems expensive, are there any alternatives? Read more

Did a Diagnostic Test as EML showing for some time. Test threw up expected P0420 Fault--CAT/Emission-- but also Fault U1900--apparently connected with Inst Panel Cluster. Cleared Fault Code Memory. OK!. Nowe have strange noise when turning on ignition--Pos II- but not starting engine. It sounds like something resetting--bit like the traveller noise you get when changing the Inks in your Printer . Noise lasts only seconds. Engine start is normal.
Any idea as to what this might be and has it anything to do with the U1900 Fault.... Read more

I have a two year old V60. It was parked late afternoon, engine switched off, electric park brake applied. All the doors/windows were closed. I did not lock the car....but did remove the key! TWO mornings later (i.e 36 hours) I came to start it but the battery was flat. Volvo Assistance attended, put a meter on the battery, 3 .8 volts i.e totally drained! The car started once the battery had been boosted with jump leads.
There were no "messages" to indicate a fault. The technician could offer no explanation, however he did advise that the electrics would not shut down completely until the car was locked by the PCC (key). Thus there would be some current drawn somewhere. (I assume that this is similar to a PC computer, or a TV, in "sleep" mode, as opposed to switching it "off"?). ... Read more
I would have been in trouble with this arrangement in my last job. When working away from base (over several days), personal cars had to be left unlocked in secure storage with the keys at the registry.
I never fully trust the electronics on my Superb, but it seemed to cope with this without problems. Returning to base in the small hours to a non-starting car would not please me one bit. How on earth can Volvo do this?...
Hi. Clutch was replaced on my car (ford KA) & now stereo is asking for code as battery disconnected etc. does anyone happen to have the code for serial number m005263? Or where I can get it from (cheapest place)

It can't be easy selling the best loved models for each of these marques. The rivalry on the racetrack has been intense for the last 50 years. This is set to end in 2016. Ford's favourite was selling over 70,000 a year in 2003. Now that figure has dipped to under 20,000 cars. GM's favourite fares a little better. In 2002 sales were around 90,000, but are now down to 30,000. A reluctance to move with market demands............. Read more
The French have also fell in love with Dacia.
Which further backs up the idea a distinct number of French buyers want practicality, simplicity and value - over alloys, gadgets and percieved street cred.
The cheaper you go, the mnore it's true that condition, and preferably a service history, matter more than make or model.
That said, buying an old Toyota seems rather less of a gamble and they soldier on for years. In your position I'd look for a Yaris / Corolla / Verso / Avensis according to the size you need. The Corolla (which was facelifted and became the Auris in about 2007) is nearest in size to your 1-series.
