Vauxhall Corsa D - Buying car back off insurance company? - jazzyman

My daughter had an accident the other day in her car a 2010 Vauxhall Corsa. The door is badly damaged and the car just appears to need a new door, the door hinges and A frame are ok.

The car was collected today by the insurance company and taken to the repair shop, where they are stating that the car may be a write off.

It such an easy fix that I wouldnt mind buying the car back (that's if it is written off) so how do I go about doing this? and how much should I expect to pay for the car, the car is probably worth around £5K without the damage.

If it's just the door, I wouldn't expect a car that age to be written off - so there may be more structural damage that isn't visible but will need repairing.

IMO a £5K car needing a door replacing, and nothing else at all, is not going to be written off - as RT said.

I am also surprised that the repair shop are considering to write the car off. The repair will need a complete new door and fittings including the electric window (the door was hit by a passing car when she opened the door). There is also a small dent on the front wing which probably will need a new wing and a side respray.

If the car is written off, how do I go about purchasing the car back? Does my daughter have to contact her insurance company?anyone else gone through this process?

Errrr.....maybe you could contact the insurance company concerned and, assuming they actually will sell it back to you ask them what the procedure is??

Or am I thinking too hard??

Just wanted advice from someone who has gone through this procedure, because the car is not written off (yet?). I wanted to see what is involved before I chase up the insurance company unnecessarily .

It's quite easy. Ask the insurance company how much they want for salvage and they'll deduct that from the settlement.

If it's a Cat D you can just repair it, MoT and insure it.

If it's a Cat C it will require an MoT and VOSA Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) just to ensure that it is still actually the same car not just the old reg on a different car (there are VOSA centres around the country). Then tax and insure.

Having spent many years working with vehicle crashworthness based in Body Engineering of a well known Midlands OEM, I would caution you that there may be significant damage to the A pillar that you may not be able to see. The A pillar is an integral part of the "safety cage" and damage here may not be repairable. I'm not familiar with the structure of Corsas. Just saying be careful and don't jump to conclusions just based on what you can "see".
