My step daughter is looking for a car for her final year at university from September, budget around £1,500. The usual suspects I assume, Micras, old Civics, etc. With small petrol engines, is mileage more important than age?

And which is the best online search resource - is it Auototrader? Read more

(i) For a small bodied diesel surely looking at 55mpg plus (going on 60mpg) against 35mpg/40 perhaps in a petrol.

Probably pick up a fresh second hand example, depending on how long his banger lasts, but it went through the stiff NI MOT with a set of new discs and pads itted by his ould Da....

I bought my 1993 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 (Phase 2 - & Sunroof)) back in 1996, and have cherished it ever since. The mileage now is 145,000, but the car still feels as strong and sweet as it always has.

It has been religiously waxed all this time.... Read more

Remember that the arguments for buying / keeping / selling cars aren't purely financial - especially when the car in question is clearly a 'fun car'.

Do you still get plenty of enjoyment out of driving it? Do you take it out at the weekend sometimes just for the hell of driving it? That's what needs to inform your decision. As far as finance is concerned, I agree with the others that it isn't rare enough yet to appreciate materially, but it will become so....

Hi I have 9 speeding points and have just been caught doing 70 on the motorway in a variable speed stretch should have been doing 60.

Question I have is the first three point I received was 3/12/09 for the offence date but 03/08/10 for the convition date, will the 2009 date be used for totting up or the conviction date in 2010.... Read more

Hi, I do not have my counterpart with me right now, but from memory first 3 were dec 2009, then nov 2010 and aug 2011 although these dates are offence dates, my first 3 points ended up going to court due to me moving address and has a convition date of aug 2010.

If you want a fancy car you are probably better off on a company car for the simple reason that they will provide much higher capital outlay and pay its higher maintenance costs.

I had company cars for 12 years until a change of job last September switched me onto a £5k allowance, which after tax and NI is around £280 a month on top of salary. Also factor in the tax saving of not having a company car (albeit might not be massive depending on what you had). In my case I handed back my 2011 520d (which I disliked in so many ways) and took over my wife's Hyundai i30 1.4. In red. We owned her 3yr old low mileage car outright, and spend my allowance on a Citroen Grand Picasso which is much better transport for my 3 kids....

Any chance of this "coming to something", or will it lead to the latest whitewash"?

I don't know about the rest of you but what I find worrying is the conclusion of the EU investigation that the alleged rigging has been going on for a decade in the light of the fact that our own OFT reported at the end of January that their investigation showed 'fuel competition is working well'.

Either the EU investigation is barking up the wrong tree or the OFT had the wool pulled well and truly over its eyes. I'm no longer a betting man but if I were I think I might have a couple of bob on the EU boys..........

I'm looking for advice on an 06 Xsara Picasso Exclusive that we viewed today and are considering buying. After looking at a few older models and Desires we've decided to go for an Exclusive and our budget of £3k will get us an 06 plate...but there really aren't many around. We can't travel too far as we have twin toddlers who are a handful!

This particular one has low mileage (64,000), FSH with Citroen dealer and extended warranty til Feb 2014 (can be transferred to us). It also has a lovely panoramic sunroof that I love. It's a 1.6i 16v petrol but we aren't bothered about engine size or fuel. ... Read more

How set are you on having a Picasso, particularly as you haven't found many to choose from? In your position, assuming that you want an MPV, I'd widen my search to include the Toyota Corolla Verso.

My sister-in-law has just sold her Verso after 10 years - and only because she needs an automatic. Her car sympathy is zero no risk of her reading this!) and most of her journeys are under a mile in West London. It never missed a beat.

Hi

I have just relised on my vw polo 1.9 sdi has a diesel leak its on the front right hand side and only leaks when it is running and a while after it has stopped running. Engine starts and runs fine as normal. Does anyone know what the problem could be ? Any advice would be greatly appriciated ... Read more

BenG

You need to pinpoint the source of the leak and then the problem is self-evident - a leaky joint or pipe needing replacement or whatever.

I suggest cleaning the area all around the leak and then driving the car for a bit and re-examining the area to see exactly where the diesel is coming from....

Just 9000 miles/14 months and the bottom hose has gone. Apparently it's on back order, and will be 3 weeks. Sounds to me like there was a faulty batch and demand is now exceeding supply or is it because the car is built in India? Am I alone? Anyone got a DIG-S with a hose that is lasting OK? Read more

Sorry I can't help with your question, but it's worth watching where cars are manufactured. I can't remember any complaints about nearly-new Nissans built in the UK.
