Hi all - I've just changed to a 2010 Focus 1.6 Zetec and have noticed what I can only describe as 2 small circular inserts, approx 8-10 mm diameter, in the top of the engine cover (cam cover?). These are hollow and threaded on the inside as if to accept bolts but currently have nothing screwed into them. Has anyone any idea what these are for, please, and is it normal for there to be nothing attached?

Many thanks Read more

>>Just wondering whether these holes need to be plugged in order to prevent debris entering or engine oil to be forced out.

If engine oil ain't falling out, don't bother!...

I purchased a BMW about 7 weeks ago from an independent dealer: purchase price GBP 6000, age 7 years, about 70K miles. The purchase price is around the "correct" price for this model-age-miles.

It soon became clear that the car is consuming excessive amounts of oil. An oil consumption test by BMW indicates 1.3 litres per 1000 km, which is about twice BMW's maximum acceptable level for this model. Both BMW dealer and an independent mechanic state that this indicates serious engine wear: BMW dealer says the car probably needs new pistons at cost of GBP 4000.... Read more

Hello - Apologies for bumping this up, but no response. Can anyone advise me here? Thanks!

Last year Nissan, Sunderland, produced more cars than the whole of Italy.

We do produce some of the world's most reliable cars, unlike the 1970s/80s. British workers have the skills, with the right product and management, to make the reliable and well built cars. :) Read more

I think it's more sustainable to send profits abroad to the owners, than to suffer the losses here in the UK, which is how life used to be.

To be fair, the Perodua Myvi is a re-bagged toyota and very competivly priced.

Its also superbly reliable.

My 2005 Mkv TDI will drive like a dream all day as long as the engine is kept running, but as soon as I switch engine off and back on, the car will misfire exactly 26 seconds after ignition. The misfire always starts exactly 26 seconds after the 2nd ignition of the day and for every ignition of the day thereafter. For example yesterday I drove it solidly for 3 hours without a problem but it misfired on each journey thereafter. This pattern repeats itself every day.

Diagnostic check throws up fault code N242 on Cylinder No3 'P1267 Regulation Range Exceeded-Intermittent' yet it can't be a mechanical fault as the car will drive perfect all day as long as ignition is left on. Is there a sensor which feeds to the ECU only on ignition?... Read more

hi guys im having problems with my speedo, i replaced the speed sensor about 6 months ago that cured the speedo problem, but last night the speedo droped to zero and is now not working, do you guys think its the speed sensor again, ive just taken the wiring loom off cleaned the conections and its still not working, surely these sensors last longer than 6 months although i did buy it off ebay if that makes any difference or is there another cause, what makes me think it could be something else is the fact that when the first sensor went it died slowly gradually getting worse, but the new one just dropped to zero straight away and i had the dashes on the readout, hope someone can help, cheers steve Read more

Is the car fitted with a lead acid battery or calcium battery ?

If lead acid battery that can cause a speedo to drop to zero.

A Focus 1 should be fitted with a calcium battery.

Railroad.

A simple but effective trick. Since your car has no synchromesh on reverse, depress the clutch pedal and engage first gear. Then without releasing the clutch disengage first gear and select reverse. This should prevent it from crunching even if the clutch is dragging slightly.

A mate and I had a Nubira on hire some years ago. Nothing to like about it, but nothing to dislike either. As boring, ordinary, four door saloons go it wasn't bad.
