Hello,

Our Skoda Fabia 1.4 MPI Estate has just gone over 100k miles and needs some expensive work on the breaks.

We're considering getting a 'new' used car to replace it, with the main focus being economy. I'd be grateful of some advice. This is what we need:

- no smaller than the fabia estate and preferably a bit bigger. It would be nice to have three in the back comfortably

- we need the estate boot, or maybe a bigger car with configurable seats to allow at least similar space to the fabia

- it doesn't have to look good, or be particularly nice to drive so long as its cheap to run. I was thinking diesel. Maybe a Japanese car for reliability? Or do we say sod it and pay for the skoda repair?

- budget of around £3000, with mileage probably around 60000 I guess.

Any advice or pointers very much appreciated. Read more

Our garage say they'd need to investigate why the brakes are not braking evenly on each side of the car. It nearly failed the MOT based on this. I can't recall off the top of my head, but our car had a problem of uneven braking at about 23% when the fail level is 24% apparently (I'm no expert) The garage was coy about how much the investigation and fixing would cost. They don't give much away.

If they want you to pay for investigation then ditch this so called garage and start using someone reputable.

Its possibly...

Forum Accident ?

We had a freak hailstorm close to Macclesfield yesterday about noon. For more than a 100yd stretch the hail carpeted the road with a layer more than an inch thick - akin to a layer of icy marbles. The driver of a car neglected to slow down according to the conditions, and when he braked for the island the car skidded, mounted the central reserve and collided with a sign post. The sign post was still straight but the shallow concrete base was almost out of the ground, leaving the post about 30 degrees out of vertical.

When we arrived the driver had got the car back on the road and was examining the damage. From the side the debris beneath the car made it look as though the car was on top of a bush. When we returned about 15 mins later the car was gone. I wonder if the driver reported the incident. Read more

noisy

About 2 years ago the aircon developed a whirring whining noise which goes up and down with engine revs., It goes off when we switch the aircon off. Noise comes on after 5 mins or so and gets louder until we turn off the aircon as it gets on your nerves. Noise seems worse on the engine overrun. We had the car into the Vauxhall Dealer and it was no better but they did not charge. I took car to an aircon specialist who repressurised the nsystem (nothing wrong with that) a couple of times since abd he came out with me in the car. Unfortunately he lives in a busy area in Birmmingham and it was difficult to hear the noise so soon after we went out. As soon as he left and I drove home it started up again. As with most car noises like bearings it's best to leave it until it gets really bad then people can diagnose it. This noise has not got muuch worse, and is never too bad when I take the car to get it fixed. Has anyone else experienced this and can telll me what this noise is due to? - Noisy Read more

Hi everyone, I'm looking for an big family car or an estate within a budget of just £4000. It needs to have a boot big enough for associated luggage for my business.I'm currently driving an Audi A3, 3 doors, 1.9, 09 so I would like something similar in terms of driving experience.

I was looking at Audi A4 Avant 1.8 and Mazda 6 2.o petrol but I'm not really sure. I'm not bothered about fuel consumption as I do low mileage and I plan to keep the next car only for few years. I alos came across Saab 9-3 but I know they stipped production so maybe will be difficlut to find spares?... Read more

Ok this may sound pretty dumb to some of you experts here. When you slacken off the lock nut at the track rod end and turn the track rod with some grips isn't it the case that all that seems to happen is that you turn the steering wheel but toe in/toe out is not effected?

Aren't you supposed to slacken off the inner locking nut as well under the gaiter., assuming there is one?... Read more
