Argh! I have a 2006 vauxhall vectra 1.9 cdi and driving home yesterday the power steering went. I managed to pull over and turn the engine on and off and it hasnt happened again but I'm fast losing confidence in my car. Im a childminder and had 4 children in the car at the time. The engine management light never came on or any warning lights. How likely is this to happen again?

I have a Panasonic DVR, model DMR-EX77. Recently the playback sound on recorded material has suffered severe deterioration. It sounds rather like the effect you used to get when the stylus got clogged with fluff. i am assuming that this is the HDD head wearing out through use (it gets plenty of use).

The HDD inside is a Hitachi Deskstar 160Gb, model HDS721616PLAT80, also says ATA/IDE on the label.... Read more

How are you finding the Veloster?

Is the MPG anywhere near the offical figures? Hyundai/Kia do seem to be the best around for milking the MPG test....

Ok, setting off with the roof covered in snow isn't sensible. But everyone has done it at least once. You only only find out why it is silly when you've done it.

In a similar vein, I overtook an over-cautious driver yesterday. The road surface was covered in snow but had tramways of clear tarmac. Manoeuvre started without a problem, accelerated briskly past the hinderance...... Read more

hillman

One of my friends told me of the evening when he was going to work down a hill that had a couple of bends with a row of back to back semis between them. My friend was riding a Lambretta scooter and had a work-mate on pilion. The two hill parts were slippery but the bends were sheet ice. My friend related how he was going slowly and he and his passenger had their feet down sliding merrily along. Then he heard a motorcycle batting down the hill, trying to turn with the bend but carrying on straight. The rider kept it all together, down the path of a house, through the back gardens, down the path of the house behind and then on down the hill.

Hi All

Just bought a car that came with quote "main dealer service history". It has high mileage but was a bargain, so when I get home and check the service book it has stamps for every year but none of them have Cambelt ticked. It probably should have and 2 by now given the mileage. So my question is where do I stand with the car dealer if the Cambelt needs replacing?

Thanks

since they are normally changed at intervals of (as an example) 100,000miles or 10 years. Because of this you cannot specify which service it will be replaced at.

Hi all,

I'm 20 years old, virtually finished university, and was looking specifically for a used Seat Ibiza 1.2 SX (2004-2006) as my first car, having passed my test 3 years ago, without driving since. I found that to purchase this Ibiza (or equivalent base 1.2 model) I would be looking to pay at least £2,000 - £2,500 for one in good+ condition, with below 70,000 mileage. Generally, I would be looking at paying around £2,500 (They aren't cheap and I suppose these cars in this economic climate are popular). Add on top of this purchase price my cheapest insurance quote (Around £850 fully comp) and tax, and you have already spent around £3,500 before you can begin to use the throttle, yet alone the possibility of oncoming MOTs , maintenance etc.... Enjoy the Volvo - they aren't unwieldy and it's not going to be too powerful with a 1.6L engine; just what you want insurance-wise at your age. If you can learn to manoeuvre it and park it well, most other cars will seem a doddle because they'll be smaller....

Mate of mine at uni drove a Skoda Octavia estate - he canoe-d so he needed to be able to put all of his canoeing kit in the car. Never was he mocked; his car was comfortable and roomy, unlike the little Corsas, AXs and Kas everyone else had.

In answer to Pete's question some years ago regarding the Airjack2000 which neatly and safely lifts any car of the ground for wheel changing, (as seen on BBC tomorrows world and best inventions - winners of both). We are pleased to announe that the new and revised version of Airjack is now ready for the market. Its looks fab and now acts as a five in one, (lifting the car electronically via the cigaette lighter, inflating the tire, measuring air device, remote controlled with safey warning device). Airjack 2000 can be changed on soft surfaces as well as hard surfaces and can be placed anywhere along the shil of the car. We are now seeking interested investors to come on board to put this long awaited item on the road Read more

I disagree - conventional jacks can't go low enough when suspension fails

This is true. The fire brigade use inflatable jacks-they aren't useless. They are also good for (BL!) cars with rotten sills that could be damaged by a conventional jack....

Just been out to town. There's loads of folks driving about with snow covered cars. Fools! A woman was killed in the last snows when she braked and the snow on her roof slid off over the screen - the wipers couldn't cope with the weight and she had a crash unable to see.

Not only that, but the snow blowing off the roof effectively means the car behind is driving through a blizzard!

Don't become a statistic. It only takes a minute with a soft brush to clear it all off.

I have seen some shocking drivers going around with lots of snow on their cars. Not a thought for what can happen.
