Since the heavy snowfalls in the US there have been two deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning. www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57568565/mass-boy-die.../

Initial reports suggests the tail pipe was blocked with snow. If that is the case I don't understand how it happened. There is only one place where the exhaust gases can go and that is through the exhaust pipe. If it can't escape out at the back then pressure would build up and gasses would escape through the smallest of gaps in joints in the exhaust system. This gas would be under the vehicle but as quick as it was leaking out it would be blown away by ambiemt air flow wind and breezes. If the gas could not escape throuh the pipe then there would be so much back pressure that the engine would stall, I assume.... Read more

Some people are more sensitive than others to low concentrations of CO. Air cooled engines usually run pretty rich But even after spending a couple of hours with the chainsaw belching CO and HC straight into my face I can't say I feel any different. But then I smoke so my bloodstream always contains CO...

You're absolutely right unthrottled. I'm sensitive to that sort of thing. Very good sense of smell - of course that can sometimes be a disadvantage :)

The lighter/power socket is ignition/key controlled. If the led lights worked with the sidelights on,then it is possiblt the socket has had the wiring altered.Certainly worth checking the fuse. Not sure which one it is on this has you have not stated year/model of car.

There are no grounds to reject, unless the vehicle is not as advertised, or has a fault that the dealer refuses to rectify, and in such case the purchaser would have to take action to recover monies

The lever at the top of the seat back moves it from recline to folded flat. Are you sure you've moved the lever far enough? Mine's got a pretty powerful return spring.

I have owned a BMW 523i for about 6 months now. Bought it as a stop gap when I gave back my company car till I could sort out a proper new car. Well, now I have bought myself a 59 plate Merc CLC and was going to put the Beemer through its MOT (which expires this week) and sell it. It failed however on CO2 emmissions upon staart up. Twice. The garage said it need a catalyst. Apparently for this model it is a 2 in - 1 out (pipes???) and available only from BMW at a cost of 800ish. Alternatively I can buy 2 new after-market units and have them welded in place at a cost of 160 for parts plus labour (4 - 5 hours).

I have been told that I may be able to solve the problem by fitting a Lambda Oxygen Sensor and retesting. Have ordered the part and waiting. Assuming this doesn't solve the problem, is there any other way around this? The car is to good to scrap - sweet engine, smooth gearbox and have replaced rear brakes, front tyres and given her an oil and filter service recently.... Read more

Hi Wondering if anyone can help, I've got a 1.4 16v golf (basic model) on 115,000 miles that has just started to vibrate whilst it's on idle (getting worse), seems to vanish and drives well once given a bit of throttle. Just had it at the garage and he's told me it wasn't firing on all cylinders - has had a replacement part to do with (injection?) but vibration not resolved and he suggests a throttle body problem but as he knows I'm on a budget he told me that a throttle body was very expensive to replace. Do I need to replace it or is there anyother solution or part that might be causing this problem.

It doesn't seem to matter if it's cold or not either.... Read more
