Hi, An elderly friend has a C1 purchased from new in '95. The Electric Power Steering started to intermittingly fail 6 months ago. It fails when the car is either at idle with the engine running or when started up ,never when being driven. It fails once or twice in a typical day.
A local [very small] country garage could not diagnose the problem apart from suggesting a new £2K pump. However they did fit a switch by the drivers leg that he was told to operate on and of a few times every time the PS failed. This works sometimes but is hardly a sensible usable fix.
Any help on guidance to fix this fault economically will be appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Peter Derbyshire

The ECU can fail, not a cheap fix, but as the EPS is electric start with the battery. A problematic battery can throw up all sorts of electrical gremlins.
Yes but how much energy went into making the curry and beer.
Who here watches it?

>why not bring back William Woollard....
Whilst going though my late grandfathers home videos several years ago, on the end of one of the tapes was William Woollard testing the then-new 4x4 Mk3 Cavalier in the snow in Norway. Car was on the F plate....
Used to travel abroad with work a lot and hire cars, usually from Avis but occasionally from others and I recall the CDW access being £200 to £250. Few days ago was sent to Portugal, a last minute thing and I ordered a car from Avis, I got a Clio.
That night in the hotel I read the agreement and noted that the access now is €1200! I was OK, I bought the insurance £9 per day, but how can the hire companies justify such high access? Read more
Thanks I will use them next time, loads cheaper then Avis too.

Is it only one of the lamps that isn't working?
My 1996 205 1.8D (non turbo) went rather wrong yesterday evening when the gears seized and the clutch pedal went very limp indeed and is close to the floor. I have done a fair few other things to my Pug but have no knowledge or experience of clutches and gearboxes etc. Having limped the poor fella home in 1st I at least have it on the drive to take a look now. With the engine off I seem to be able to easily move between gears on the driveway. With the engine on (and the car in neutral obviously!) there is a squeal which changes in pitch slightly when I wiggle the limp pedal up and down . Can anyone give me any pointers as to how to go about diagnosing the problem? If it's something as simple as a clutch cable going then I'll have a go at fixing, otherwise if it's nastier then it's off to the mechanic.
Thanks

This does sound like a snapped clutch cable. It happened to me about 10 years ago in a 205 Dturbo, just outside Hereford - luckily on a gentle downhill so I could cruise onto the verge and wait for the RAC man. He managed to crimp the broken end (gearbox end) and we got home OK. The repair lasted for several months until we sold the car, as getting a new cable down the narrow space behind the engine is no fun, though it is probably better without the turbo.
Way back in the 60s when I had driving lessons in a Mini, my instructor showed me how to change gear without the clutch, by learning to match engine note and road speed. Maybe you could try that? :-)
I have one question I'd love to know the answer to. When a piston drives a connecting rod, making it move in a certain sideways direction, and therefore causing the crankshaft rotate clockwise or anticlockwise, what is it that makes the connecting rod move in one direction or another - ie if the piston was at Top Dead Centre, surely the downward force could make the connecting rod go in either direction, in fact how come it doesn't go straight down, what makes it go left or right? Is it a sensor that means it only fires the sparkplug when the rod is already moved to one side, in which case what sets it at this side? Or are the connecting rods or camshaft shaped so that they can only move in one direction from being pushed down?
Am guessing its not a sensor or how would it have worked in the days of the first internal combustion engine when there were no sensors. Read more

So did everyone else. My father's 1929 Riley 9 has a Dynastart rather than a seperate Dynamo and Starter motor....
In the real world is there any insurance difference between:
Factory fit oem alloys
Dealer fit oem alloys
DIY Oem alloys bought of ebay
I know officially any accessory other than standard equipment should be declared, but in reality would an insurance company know or care about the difference between a standard 15" alloy and a 16" oem alloy? Read more
But would anyone notice or care about 16" vw wheels vs 15" vw wheels
They could have been a dealer or factory upgrade which I can't imagine anyone declares...

Not of it is hydraulically driven. In any case power, power assistance is only required at low speed. ...
