My father always used to say that you'll spot the right one because "it will speak to you".

He's absolutely right. Look round it, sit in it, start it and listen to it. If it "feels right", it probably is. Something with a few well-chosen extras is always a good bet, it means that it's original owner cared enough about it to pay a shade more for it....

I have had a good browse on the internet however I am unable to find a clear answer to a query I am having, probably due to the complexity of it!

I have a car which is registered in my mum's name and she is listed as the registered keeper but I use the car primarily. I have discussed with my insurer last year and they said it not a problem I just had to be the main driver with my mum as a named driver on my policy rather than it being the other way round.... You may well get a problem (premium hike) if it is not kept at the registered keepers address. You are lucky getting reasonable cover as it is because I always ran into trouble with the question "are you the registered keeper" at which point the web engines used to say "unable to quote"

It has been reported on American forum websites that V.W. drivers are having their D.S.G, clutch discs replaced under warranty because of warping discs.

could this be what is causing all the problems with the V.W. D.S.G. gearboxes ?... Read more

Interesting. I wonder if this is confined to the dry-clutch DSGs, which are the ones giving all the trouble in the UK.

BREAKING NEWS

On a controversial thread debating the impact of immigration policy on insurance premiums, one notable member criticised both UK and EU policy and called for a work-permit-based immigration system to stem the flow of unskilled labour from the Baltic states. The decadent individual also stated basic mathematical facts much to the chagrin of fellow Back Roomers.... Read more

Thank you for mentioning a car, MLJ - that's what this forum is about. Actually the number of threads and members is increasing, because of people asking advice or making comments about motoring issues. But I agree - this is not the place for political ranting which can indeed put people off.

Very amusing, Jamie, but this thread isn't going any further as it's nothing to do with motoring. There is a General section for non-motoring threads, which those interested in motoring can safely ignore - although we will of course monitor it and delete anything offensive....

I had a mechanic check it out its a dif bearing thats on the way out.

Now given the age of the car a 59 plate that came out of skoda waranty in November, with only 36,000 miles on it when I bought it at the end of Feb this year, but not from a skoda dealer how could I get skoda to fix it for free, the car came from a skoda dealer to the dealer I bought it from...

Has anyone else noticed how appallingly noisy many double decker buses are now?

Around here the fleet run by FirstBus are rear engined with huge cooling fans behind a grille on the right rear, the fan noise drowns the engine sound as they pull away or grind up the many hills.... Read more

At least the horrible whining, rattly noise made by the original Leyland National buses, with their seriously smoking Leyland 500 series engines, is no longer heard in towns and cities of this land.

Hello All, our Grand C-Max 2.0 tdci (less than 3 months old) is suffering two starting problems possibly linked.

1. Starts eventually after not responding to repeated attempts for about 10 seconds. During that 10 seconds, the dash continually switches to and from showing a diagram of the steering buttons (4 arrows and the OK button) and a message "Interior Scan Yes No". This happens from cold but not from warm. Starting from warm, the Interior scan message does not appear. But it does appear when the engine is switched off.

2. Did not start at all. Dash and battery ok. Simply no response. Called out AA who said that there were no fault codes. He "reset the system" and the car started.

Any advice appreciated.
What's interior scan? Is the message supposed to show when starting or only switching off or both?
Does point 1 seem normal if starting from cold in winter? We got the car in late november and the slow-responding starting did not happen then.
Are points 1 and 2 linked? Read more

Actually the interior scan message is On / Off (and not yes / no), sorry for any confusion caused!
